A Lifetime to Become a Christian

CORRIERE DELLA SERA INTERNATIONAL: It was the best day of my life. Receiving the gift of the Christian faith on the day of Christ’s Resurrection from the hand of the Holy Father is a matchless privilege and inestimable blessing. For me, at the age of almost 56, it was a unique, unforgettable historic event that signalled a radical, definitive change with respect to the past. During the night of 22 March 2008, on the occasion of the Easter Vigil, at the solemn liturgy celebrated in the magnificence of the Basilica of St Peter’s, the cradle of Catholicism, I was reborn in Christ. At the end of a long, protracted struggle, lived out as a Muslim by reason of the legacy inherited from my parents and with a personal history of lacerating doubts and torments, there ignited within me, by divine will and responsible choice, the light of the true Christian faith. My spiritual metamorphosis unfolded from nine o’clock over three hours that seemed as if they would never end. I passed those hours in uncontrollable excitement, outwardly betrayed by my tingling nerves, over the radical nature of the life experience that was taking place inside me and, I admit, in part because of the cold that gripped me and stayed with me from the beginning of the imposing ceremony in the atrium of the Basilica, accompanied by rain and icy temperatures.

Inside the Basilica, the lights had been extinguished. I was outside with six other adult catachumens waiting to receive the sacraments of Christian initiation, seated on the part of the parvis most exposed to the wind. It was in that damp cold, which usually makes me a little agitated and means I have to concentrate more to listen, reflect, assess and elaborate concepts, that I began to relive the film of my inner life. Half a century was reviewed frame by frame and sliced up with the now uncompromising, now compassionate scalpel of religion, calm enough for one last unconscious confirmation of a decision already taken consciously yet at the same time with sufficient urgency to recompose the overall framework of my existence into a harmonious whole, joyfully to register the image of the long-awaited, soon to be accomplished, Event, as I reinterpreted my past while redefining and revolutionising my future. (...) From the atrium, Benedict XVI led the procession towards the altar after the deacon, chanting the Lumen Christi for the third time, had brought the splendour of light back to the Basilica.

Then began the crucial stage of my conversion to Christianity, to which evidently I was called by the grace of God that had accompanied me from my youngest days, bringing into my path a series of “coincidences” that were anything but fortuitous, concealing as they did the will of the Lord that discreetly comes to meet us without making its presence palpable. As I slowly walked down the nave at the rear of the procession, my mind at once went back to the key event that started me on the route of interior spirituality at the age of four, and would more than half a century later culminate in my conversion to Christ. It was September 1956. I still have clear in my mind the day on which my long travails began. I had burst into tears as my mother Safeya, aided and persuaded by the Caccias, the family of wealthy Italian textile magnates resident for generations in my native Cairo, handed me over to Sister Lavinia. She hid me under her habit so I would not see my mother entrusting me to the education and affection of the Combonian sisters and their devotion to St Joseph. Later on, from the last year of primary school to the last year of my scientific secondary school, I studied at the Salesian Don Bosco Institute. A Schism over Shari'a in the Church of England

MIDDLE EAST FORUM: The debate over the trajectory of the Western sociopolitical system and its strained relations with Islam is the most pivotal of our time, as approaches decided upon today will impact billions not yet born. Two prelates in the ever more fractious Church of England provide a microcosm of this discourse.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and Bishop of Rochester Michael Nazir-Ali have emerged as central combatants in the dispute between two fundamentally opposed models of social organization: multiculturalism and universalism. The former bestows equal standing upon different cultures in the public square. The latter bestows equal standing upon individuals who wield a common set of rights and responsibilities. Which system prevails will ultimately determine the level of danger that homegrown Islamists pose to Britain, Europe, and the broader West.

Nazir-Ali believes that Britain's campaign to reconstitute itself as a multicultural society has failed, and he explained why in a January 6 op-ed. By emphasizing differences over common values, his country has promoted alienation among Muslims, many of whom are "living as separate communities, continuing to communicate in their own languages, and having minimum need for building healthy relationships with the majority." Since segregation breeds extremism, Islamist-dominated "no-go areas" now dot the map. A Schism over Shari'a in the Church of England >>> By David J Rusin, American Thinker | May 11, 2008

Will Québec Decide to ‘Reasonably Accommodate’ Islam?

MIDDLE EAST FORUM: As religious prescriptions for living lately have come to be infused into daily life in novel and provocative ways, the question is often posed: Has the presence of Islam changed the face of social relations in the West? The question has especially animated Canada's bilingual Quebec province - a political entity that seeks to apply the rule of law to all its residents, without exception. This is a debate we'd do well to consider, as voices raised to implement and to protest exceptions to the law become more frequent, more strident, and more divisive.

In the beginning was the town of Hérouxville (motto: Carpe Diem), whose municipal council unanimously adopted a code (in English and in French) of "societal norms" in January. These applied to the town's 1,300 residents, but concerned future resident immigrants, especially. Most noted was language condemning public stoning of women and genital excision.

The point? The fact that "men and women have the same value." And that from this derives

"a woman's right to drive an automobile, vote her conscience, sign checks, dance, and decide for herself."

The town's normative code also remarks that Quebeckers are wont to decorate Christmas trees and patronize physicians of either gender, that cuts of pork and beef may very well mingle on the butcher's table, and that girls and boys do swim together.

This being, the charter continues,

"we consider it unacceptable to stone women to death in the public square, or to burn them alive, disfigure them with acid, or subject them to genital mutilation."

It also requires residents to expose their faces, at all times, in public, for purposes of identification (All Hallow's Eve excepted). Will Quebec Decide to 'Reasonably Accommodate' Islam? >>> By R John Matthies, American Thinker | September 16, 2007

Amnesty Urges Release of Saudi Facing Flogging

KHALEEJ TIMES: RIYADH - Amnesty International has urged Saudi authorities to release a Saudi university professor who is facing flogging and imprisonment for meeting a woman to whom he is not related for coffee in the conservative Islamic kingdom.

Muhammad Ali Abu Raziza, a psychology lecturer at the university of Mecca, has been sentenced to 150 lashes and eight months in jail after the religious police caught him with a woman in a coffee shop, the rights group said in a statement.

Justice ministry officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Saudi Arabia applies an austere form of Islam which bans women from mixing with men to whom they are not related, voting and driving, and punishes men and women found guilty of illegal encounters, known as khilwa offences.

The statement did not say what happened to the woman who was meeting Abu Raziza.

‘Saudi Arabia should stop needlessly persecuting people like this -- we want to see a complete end to people in the kingdom being punished for 'khilwa' offences,’ Amnesty said.

The religious police, known as the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, have wide powers to search for alcohol, drugs and prostitution, ensure shops are closed during prayers in addition to maintaining a strict system of sexual segregation.

Criticism of the force has re-emerged after its members were involved in a series of incidents, which led to the deaths of six people in car chases. [Source: Amnesty Urges Release of Saudi Facing Flogging] (Reuters)

Burt Prelutsky: Why Jews Vote the Way They Do

TOWNHALL.COM: If I am asked one question by my readers far more frequently than any other, it’s why do so many American Jews insist on aligning themselves with the far left. Believe me, being Jewish myself, it’s the question I most frequently ask myself.

It’s certainly not because Jews are stupid, evil, unpatriotic or dependent on government handouts for their survival, four reasons that certainly explain why millions of my fellow Americans will eagerly line up to vote for any political crackpot so long as he or she is running as a Democrat.

Having given it a great deal of thought, I believe the explanation is to be found in the way we tend to be raised. It’s not so strange if you think about it. After all, most people are Catholics or Protestants, Mormons or Muslims, because that was the religion practiced in their homes. Well, for most Jews, liberal politics played an essential role in their upbringing. It’s why a much higher percentage of us vote for Democrats than attend synagogue regularly or keep kosher. Islam Will Conquer Rome, Insists Former Jordanian Minister

CATHOLIC NEWS AGENCY: A former Jordanian minister has seized upon commentary about the decline of Western power, saying on Arabic-language television that Islam will conquer Rome. He went on to say that Spain is an Islamic land that should be retaken and that America has begun to realize its “end is near.”

The remarks by former Jordanian Minister of Religious Endowment Ali Al-Faqir were broadcast on Al-Aqsa TV on May 2.

According to a transcript prepared by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), Al-Faqir said Palestine from the Jordan to the Mediterranean is an Islamic land. “Spain – Andalusia – is also the land of Islam,” he said.

“Islamic lands that were occupied by the enemies will once again become Islamic. Furthermore, we will reach beyond these countries, which are lost at one point. We proclaim that we will conquer Rome, like Constantinople was conquered once, and as it will be conquered again.

“America has occupied, thundered, and foamed with rage, and proclaimed, like Pharaoh, ‘I am your supreme God,’ but it will come to its end, and they have begun to realize that their end is near,” he said. Former Jordanian Minister Insists Islam Will Conquer Rome >>> | May 10, 2008

BBC: Clashes have flared outside Beirut as Lebanon's army struggled to contain the country's worst internal fighting since its bitter 15-year civil war.

While the capital seemed calm after four days of fighting killed 38 people, violence spread in hills to its east.

Earlier, troops had deployed in the northern city of Tripoli to end battles between Hezbollah sympathisers and supporters of the government.

Thousands fled their homes as running street battles raged overnight.

Media Mum as McCain ‘Spiritual Guide’ Calls for the Destruction of Islam

TWIN CITIES DAILY PLANET: Islam “intends, through violence, to conquer the world,” and “America was founded in part with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed.” So says pastor Rod Parsley, who on February 26 endorsed John McCain for president. McCain has praised Parsley up and down, for his “leadership” and “guidance” and as a “moral compass” and a “spiritual guide.”

Hailed by McCain as “one of the truly great leaders in America,” Parsley believes that “Mohammed received revelations from demon spirits not from the living god” and says the U.S. stands as a “bastion against Islam in the world.” But campaign staffers say McCain’s acceptance of Parsley’s endorsement shouldn’t be construed as endorsement of the pastor’s ideology.

As Mother Jones reports, McCain has refrained from criticizing the Cincinnati pastor, “an important political ally in a crucial swing state.” Of course, the mainstream media has so far made barely a peep about McCain and Parsley while continuing to pile on Obama over his links to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. [Source: Media Mum as McCain 'Spiritual Guide' Calls for the Destruction of Islam]

Murdered Norwegian Girl’s Father Begs Arab Billionaire to Hand Over His Son

MAIL ON SUNDAY: The father of the beautiful Norwegian student murdered in London has made an impassioned plea to the man wanted in connection with her killing to give himself up.

Farouk Abdulhak, the son of a billionaire tycoon, was the last person to be seen with 23-year-old Martine Vik Magnussen.

He fled to his native Yemen two days before her body was found, semi-naked and strangled, in the basement of the block of luxury flats where he lived.

From his home in Oslo, Martine's father Petter Magnussen, 56, told The Mail on Sunday: "Martine's loss has turned my life upside-down. I cannot begin to articulate the grief my family and I feel after losing her. To do so would kill me. But I feel an obligation to contribute towards getting justice for my daughter.

"The British police have repeatedly expressed their wish to speak to Farouk in Britain. If he has no information about Martine's death, there is no reason to make himself unavailable to them."

Petter, chief executive officer for a company that makes rescue equipment for Nato, believes that Farouk's father Shaher Abdulhak could be using his money and influence to prevent his son being brought back to Britain.

"As a father I understand the challenge facing Mr Abdulhak on a personal level," said Petter. "But I trust he is able to put himself in my position and sympathise with what my family and I are going through.

"As parents, we raise our children to make the right choices in life. In this case, coming forward to clarify the circumstances of Martine's death is clearly the right thing to do.

"I am convinced Mr Shaher Abdulhak has the authority to help ensure justice prevails. I hope he will use it so our family can continue with our lives in the best way possible." Hand Your Son Over, Murdered Girl's Father Begs Arab Billionaire >>> By Antonia Hoyle | May 11, 2008

Allegra, Boris’ first wife, as cover girl for the July/August 1984 edition of Tatler

MAIL ON SUNDAY: They appeared to be the golden couple of Oxford University.

Boris Johnson was the brains who, as the eccentric president of the prestigious Oxford Union, was already earmarked as a future political leader, while Allegra Mostyn-Owen was the ethereal beauty who had been a Tatler cover girl.

Their romance blossomed amid the city's dreaming spires, and they tied the knot in a grand wedding soon after leaving university. But the fairy tale was not to last long – and today their lives are worlds apart.

As Boris began his term as Mayor of London last week, his former wife went to work at an East London mosque where she teaches art to young Muslims.

This was not the life Allegra seemed destined for. As the only daughter of acclaimed Italian writer Gaia Servadio and multimillionaire landowner and art historian William Mostyn-Owen, a privileged existence amid the upper echelons of society seemed assured.

But Allegra, now 43, is said to have been so deeply affected by the collapse of her marriage that she left all that behind to channel her passions into good causes.

Radical Muslim Preacher Heaps More Embarrassment on Government

SUNDAY EXPRESS: FIREBRAND preacher Abu Qatada is set to heap more embarrassment on the Government with a compensation claim for £500,000 for wrongful imprisonment.

Qatada, 48, once described as Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe, was granted bail by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission last week after defeating the Government’s attempts to deport him to Jordan.

The radical cleric, who once called on British Muslims to martyr themselves, was convicted in his absence of involvement in two bombings of hotels in Amman in 1998. Tapes of his sermons were also found in a flat in Germany used by some of the 9/11 hijackers.

The Bethlehem-born Muslim was jailed six years ago under anti-terror laws rushed in after the twin towers attacks in 2001. He was released in 2004 but arrested again in 2005.

Last month the Appeal Court ruled that he could not be deported on human rights grounds as some of the evidence against him was allegedly obtained through torture and there was no guarantee he would not be tortured in Jordan.

Terrorism Officials Kidding Themselves and the General Public

UPI: WASHINGTON -- Two documents circulated by U.S. counter-terrorism officials suggest avoiding the terms "Muslim" or "Islamic" when referring to militant groups.

The National Counterterrorism Center distributed two documents in April urging U.S. officials to use terms like extremists, totalitarian or cult when describing al-Qaida and other militant groups.

The NCTC documents caution against using terms like "jihad" or "mujahedin" because their Arabic meaning -- "struggle" and "strugglers" -- "unintentionally legitimize" terrorism, United Press International reported Wednesday.

There' s a growing consensus (in the Bush administration) that we need to move away from that language," said one former Cabinet official.

The documents advise officials to think of al-Qaida an "illegitimate political organization" to avoid supporting the group's ideology that uses religious doctrine to justify violent acts.

It also recommends against using variations of "Islam" because lay audiences make no distinction between Islamism, the political doctrine based on the religious teachings of Islam, and the religion itself.

The use of the technical variations may be correct, the documents say, but "it may not be strategic for (U.S. government) officials to use the term." Terrorism Officials Advise Language Shift >>> | May 7, 2008

Organization of the Islamic Conference Tries to Rectify Image of Muslims. Sound Advice to the Oraganization: Quit Waging the Jihad!

TODAY’S ZAMAN: Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu has stated that a project called the Islamophobia Observatory has been launched in order to eliminate the worldwide waves of fear of Islam.

İhsanoğlu cited the commonsensical intellectual reaction of the Danish public following cartoons published in the country that were critical of Islam as one of the important successes of the project. "We presented a report on Islamophobia at the first summit we held with the CEOs and civil society organizations we are in touch with. It has sparked very positive reactions and spread across Europe in a short time. Publications have praised the initiative. We have seen both support of and opposition to the initiative, but [all in all] it has created very positive reactions," he said.

İhsanoğlu visited the Zaman Media Group on Thursday and briefed editors and columnists on OIC projects. Stating that the foremost target was to eradicate prejudice and fear of Islam, İhsanoğlu noted that there were groups in favor of the projects and also those disturbed by them. An OIC report on Islamophobia has seriously disconcerted Americans and Europeans, he said, adding: "The report has started to pay off. Let me give you an example: The cartoons published in Denmark and a short film, named 'Fitna' and released last month, if you look at the attitudes of the Danish prime minister, the media and civil society organizations, they are all very different from one another. So far, in these three-and-a-half years we have managed to get the UN General Assembly and Geneva make very important decisions. In the meantime the European group was left alone. We have gathered significant support from our own group in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
