THE NEW YORK TIMES: The American Heart Association report runs contrary to recent studies — and the group’s own guidelines — that found any amount of alcohol to be harmful.
For a while, it seemed the notion that light drinking was good for the heart had gone by the wayside, debunked by new studies and overshadowed by warnings that alcohol causes cancer.
Now the American Heart Association has revived the idea in a scientific review that is drawing intense criticism, setting off a new round of debate about alcohol consumption.
The paper, which sought to summarize the latest research and was aimed at practicing cardiologists, concluded that light drinking — one to two drinks a day — posed no risk for coronary disease, stroke, sudden death and possibly heart failure, and may even reduce the risk of developing these conditions. » | Roni Caryn Rabin | Tuesday, December 16, 2025

UK Government Advised against Mass Prostate Cancer Screening by Expert Committee | BBC News
Nov 28, 2025 | The UK’s National Screening Committee advised against routine prostate cancer screening for the majority of men.
Health secretary, Wes Streeting, said he'll "examine the evidence" and will take into account different views on screening ahead of a decision in March.
Mass testing could cause more harm than good - even for those at high risk, including black men and those with a family history, according to the expert committee.

Women with Alzheimer’s Have Unusually Low Omega Fatty Acid Levels, Study Finds
THE GUARDIAN: Analysis of blood samples finds women with the disease have 20% lower levels, a pattern not seen in men
Women should ensure they are getting enough omega fatty acids in their diets according to researchers, who found unusually low levels of the compounds in female patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
The advice follows an analysis of blood samples from Alzheimer’s patients and healthy individuals, which revealed levels of unsaturated fats, such as those containing omega fatty acids, were up to 20% lower in women with the disease.
The low levels were not seen in men with Alzheimer’s, suggesting there may be sex differences in how the disease takes hold and affects a person’s physiology.
…
Alzheimer’s disease is twice as common in women as in men. Factors including women’s longer average lifespan, differences in hormones, immune responses and educational opportunities can all play a role in the development of the disease. » | Ian Sample | Science Editor | Wednesday, August 20, 2025
