Celebrities Call for Drug Decriminalisation

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Dame Judi Dench has joined a coalition of celebrities, politicians and former police chiefs to urge David Cameron to decriminalise possession of all drugs.

In an open letter to the Prime Minister, they called for "a swift and transparent review of the effectiveness of current drug policies" because the current laws have failed.

The campaign is backed by actresses Dame Judi and Julie Christie, singer Sting, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and former Home Office minister Bob Ainsworth.

Film director Mike Leigh, actress Kathy Burke, three former chief constables and leading lawyers have also put their name to the letter.

It came as a separate group of former world leaders and high profile figures called on governments around the world to “urgently” consider decriminalisation because the “war on drugs” has failed.

Sting said: "Giving young people criminal records for minor drug possession serves little purpose – it is time to think of more imaginative ways of addressing drug use in our society." » | Tom Whitehead, Home Affairs Editor | Thursday, June 02, 2011

My comment:

At a time when smoking even tobacco has been all but criminalised, it makes little sense to decriminalise all other drugs. We appear to be living in a topsy-turvy, upside-down world, where things that were once considered normal have been de-normalised, and things that were considered abnormal and deviant are being rolled out anew as something acceptable. They are not acceptable in my eyes. We need to keep drugs out of daily life as much as is possible. And I certainly do not want to be preached to by these so-called 'stars.' They want to legalise these drugs in all probability because they partake of them. Let them find other countries to accept their deviant, unhealthy ways! Don't bring them anywhere near me!

We already have a colossal problem with people suffering from Alzheimers disease. Heaven forbid that the laws on drugs be relaxed. In years to come the institutions which care for the mentally ill will be full to overflowing! – © Mark

» | AG/red | Samstag, 28. Mai 2011

Deadly Effect of Brazil's New Drug

A new and deadly drug is causing great concern in Brazil. Called Oxi, it's a derivative of cocaine, but it's much stronger and highly addictive. Many get hooked the first time they try it.

In his second report in a Two-Part series, Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo spoke with one former user in the Brazilian city of Rio Branco, who recounts how the drug almost destroyed his life as well as his family's.

Drugs 'Readily Available' at JP Morgan

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Drugs were “readily available” at global financial company JP Morgan, the Old Bailey has heard.

Personal assistant Emily McMillan stole thousands of pounds from the company after getting into debt buying narcotics from a drug-dealing colleague.

McMillan, 28, used corporate credit cards belonging to senior executives to steal the money.

She then spent it on a friend’s breast enhancement operation, a girls’ holiday in Ibiza and to make a repayment on her brother’s mortgage.

The Old Bailey heard that she began stealing after she fell into debt through taking drugs supplied by a colleague at JP Morgan. She had access to corporate credit cards to make travel and other arrangements on behalf of senior staff. But she was caught after a routine audit and later admitted four counts of fraud and one of theft, totalling £10,633, all committed between March and May last year. >>> Andy Bloxham | Friday, January 07, 2011

The Drugalyser: New Weapon in the Clampdown on Drug Driving

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A new handheld “drugalyser” that detects substance abuse in under two minutes could become the latest weapon the clampdown on drug driving.

The portable handheld device can detect cocaine and heroine from a saliva sample within 90 seconds and other substances within minutes. It is able to detect drugs in the body at far lower levels than existing testing devices[.]

The new portable device, which will be available in 2011, would mean police officers could carry out tests on suspected drug drivers at the roadside. >>> Heidi Blake | Thursday, November 18, 2010

NZ Garden Chain Was 'Cornerstone' of Marijuana Industry

Photobucket
The 16-store chain was described by police as forming part of the backbone of the country's cannabis industry. Photo: Times Online

TIMES ONLINE: To most keen gardeners, a trip to the local garden centre means little more than the purchase of some bedding plants, a bag of potting mix and perhaps some gardening tips.

But when undercover police called in at Switched on Gardener, a New Zealand chain of garden supply shops, the advice they were given had nothing to do with rose blight. Instead, they were allegedly given tips on how to cultivate cannabis, and were able to buy cannabis plants and other drugs over the counter.

The 16-store chain, described by police as forming part of the backbone of the country's $800 million cannabis industry has now been closed down after one of the country's biggest ever anti-drugs crackdowns[.]

During a two-year operation police also raided 19 other gardening businesses across New Zealand arresting 250 people and dismantling over 100 commercial cannabis growing operatinos [sic] allegedly linked to the businesses. >>> Anne Barrowclough, Sydney | Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Nutt by Name, Nutt by Nature*! Nutt: Hand Out Mephedrone in Clubs

YAHOO! NEWS UK: Mephedrone should be handed out in nightclubs, the Government's former drugs tsar said.

Professor David Nutt said doling out small amounts of the drug with guidance on its use would be "safer" than banning it.

In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Professor Nutt said criminal gangs would be "rubbing their hands" at the prospect of the drug being outlawed by the Government.

Ministers are expected to receive a report from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) on Monday.

Les Iversen, Prof Nutt's successor, has hinted they will recommend the drug will be made Class B, along with amphetamines and cannabis.

Prof Nutt, who was sacked as ACMD chairman after saying ecstasy was less harmful than alcohol, proposed regulating mephedrone - known as M-Cat or Miaow Miaow - rather than forcing dealers on to the black market.

He told the newspaper: "I wouldn't be against exploring the possibility of some sort of regulated use for MDMA or mephedrone where people, maybe in clubs, could have access to small amounts, safe amounts under guidance."

He added: "It would probably be safer than what we're doing at present." >>> Press Association | Thursday, March 25, 2010

Five-year-olds Need to Play with Dinky Toys Not Learn about Sex! Children Need Their Innocence and Fantasy for Healthy Development

THE TELEGRAPH: Sex and drug lessons will be compulsory under plans announced by the Schools Secretary.

Under the new curriculum, pupils as young as seven will learn about puberty and the facts of life and five-year-olds will be taught about parts of the body, relationships and the effects of drugs on the body.

Once they reach secondary school, pupils will learn about contraception, HIV and Aids, pregnancy and different kinds of relationships - including same sex unions and civil partnerships.

So-called Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is to become compulsory in both primary and secondary schools from September 2011, and will be enshrined in new legislation.

Faith schools will not be able to opt out of any part of the new statutory curriculum, Ed Balls also confirmed today, although they will be able to teach topics within the ''tenets of their faith''.

Under current rules parents have the right to withdraw their child from sex education classes up until the age of 19. Sex and drug lessons from age 5 >>> | Thursday, November 05, 2009

Barack Obama's Half-brother George Arrested in Kenya over Drugs

THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama's Kenyan half-brother, George, has been arrested by police in Nairobi on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

The 24-year-old, who denies the allegation, was told he would face a court hearing on Monday.

President Obama's young half-sibling was in the headlines last year after it was revealed that he was living in a corrugated iron shack in a sprawling slum as his brother ran for the most powerful job in the world.

George, who was the son of Mr Obama's father by his second wife, was one of the president's few close relatives who did not travel to Washington for the inauguration on Jan 20.

The two met previously when Mr Obama visited his ancestral homeland in an encounter that he described as a "painful affair" in his memoir Dreams from My Father.

Inspector Augustine Mutembei said the trainee mechanic would face charges of possession of cannabis and resisting arrest. >>> By Philip Sherwell in New York | Saturday, January 31, 2008

Somebody, at Last, Speaks Some Sense on the (British) Family!

DAILY MAIL: Family breakdown is a "cancer" behind almost every evil affecting the country, a senior judge will declare today.

Mr Justice Coleridge blames youth crime, child abuse, drug addiction and binge-drinking on the "meltdown" of relations between parents and children.

He warns that the collapse of the family unit is a threat to the nation as bad as terrorism, crime, drugs or global warming.

The speech to family lawyers contains a fierce attack on the "neglect" of successive governments.

The 58-year-old judge, who is married with three grown-up children, will say family breakdown is an epidemic affecting all levels of society from the Royal Family down.

It is "on a scale, depth and breadth which few of us could have imagined even "a decade ago. It is a never-ending carnival of human misery. A ceaseless river of human distress.

"I am not saying every broken family produces dysfunctional children but I am saying that almost every dysfunctional child is the product of a broken family."

The judge, who is in charge of family courts across South-West England, will say he has a duty to speak out.

He will call on the Government to put the family at the top of its agenda, alongside the economy and the war on terror - and make it "rather more important than taking oaths of allegianc" [sic].

His speech will say: "Families are the cells which make up the body of society. If the cells are unhealthy and undernourished, or at worse cancerous and growing haphazard and out of control, in the end the body succumbs.

"In some of the more heavily populated urban areas, family life is quite frankly in meltdown or completely unrecognisable . . . it is on an epidemic scale. In some areas of the country family life in the old sense no longer exists." Family Life Is in 'Meltdown': Judge Launches Devastating Attack on Our Fractured Society >>> By Steve Doughty

I Shouldn't Be Here: Ledger's Drugs Dismay

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: Speculation about the death of the Australian actor Heath Ledger has resurfaced after video footage emerged of him talking about drug use at a Hollywood party.

Channel Nine last night broadcast excerpts of the video, which was allegedly made two years ago at the Chateau Marmont hotel on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard - the same hotel where the actor John Belushi died.

It was reported that the footage was taken while Ledger's girlfriend, Michelle Williams, and their daughter, Matilda Rose, were upstairs.

Ledger was not shown taking drugs, although others can be seen in grainy footage apparently snorting a substance off a table.

"I'm going to get serious shit from my girlfriend," Ledger says in the video.

Asked by someone why, he replies: "We had a baby three months ago."

He goes on to tell the person his daughter's name and then says: "I shouldn't be here at all." I shouldn't be here: Ledger's drugs dismay >>> By Jonathan Dart
