THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Far-right anti-Islamic groups from across Europe are planning to rally in Denmark, for what organisers have billed as the birth of a European movement.
More than 10 anti-Islamic groups, led by the English Defence League, are expected to send representatives.
"There will be speeches from every defence league in Europe," said Isak Nygren, the spokesman for the Swedish Defence League. "I hope we can show that there's resistance against Islamisation of Europe, that we can inspire each other."
The EDL has held one European rally before, sending members to Amsterdam in 2010 in support of Dutch anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders, who was in court accused of insulting religious and ethnic groups.
Mr Wilders, who has moved to distance himself from the EDL, is not expected to attend the event.
Stephen Lennon, the former football hooligan who formed the EDL three years ago, however said he was inspired by the Amsterdam gathering to link up with other far-Right groups in Europe, setting up the European Freedom Initiative.
He described the planned gathering, in Aarhus on March 31, as the "first proper European event".
"We're hoping this will be the launch of a wider European Defence League," he said. "We don't expect it to be big, but our first event wasn't that big, and they're just going to get bigger and bigger." » | Richard Orange, Malmö | Wednesday, January 18, 2012

HAARETZ: Israeli and Vatican historians met for the first time Sunday to discuss the current state of research into Pope Pius XII and his Holocaust-era conduct.
The gathering at Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial signals a growing willingness of Israeli and Vatican officials to try to resolve one of their most sensitive disagreements - the pope's action or inaction during the Nazi genocide.
Most Jews believe Pope Pius XII was partly to blame for the scope of the Holocaust tragedy for failing to speak out publicly against the Nazi atrocities or attempting to mobilize Catholics in Germany and elsewhere to stop it.
The Vatican has struggled to defend its wartime pope as it pushes his sainthood cause, insisting that Pius spearheaded discreet diplomacy that saved thousands of Jews.
A symbol of the dispute is a caption of a photo of Pius at Yad Vashem's museum that says he did not protest the Nazi genocide of Jews and maintained a largely neutral position. The Vatican protests the wording. >>> Associated Press | Monday, March 9, 2009

RADIANCE VIEWSWEEKLY: The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has deplored an anti-Islam conference to be held in Germany next month, urging all segments of the German society to take a firm stand against the proponents of hatred. “The OIC expresses serious concern over reports of the holding of ‘Anti Islamisation Congress’ in Cologne, Germany,” the world’s biggest Muslim body said in a statement. Koeln members were associated with neo-Nazi parties or groupings. OIC has warned that the conference was “intended to arouse anti-Muslim sentiments in Europe. “Organisers of the proposed event were motivated by racial hatred and the so-called “Anti-Islamisation Congress” is to take place on September 19-20 in Germany’s fourth-largest city of Cologne. The meeting is organised by Pro Koeln, a far-right organisation which has held five seats in Cologne’s city council since 2004.”
Meanwhile, a well-known Holocaust survivor, German Jewish writer and Holocaust survivor Ralph Giordano, has come out strongly against the planned so-called Anti-Islamisation Congress. He said he strongly opposes the international anti-Islam conference slated to take place in Germany next month, despite his critical stance on Islam.
