Take 'Extremist Crackpot' Anjem Choudary Seriously As Possibly One of Britain's Most Serious Terrorist Threats, Says Report

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Anjem Choudary has become a serious player on the international Islamist scene and it is time to stop laughing at his ridiculous stunts, says Hope not Hate report

Campaigners have claimed that extremist preacher Anjem Choudray [sic] is being wrongly treated as "a figure of fun" while his banned Islamist movement Al-Muhajiroun acts as ''a conveyor belt to terrorist groups''.

Hope not Hate has published a report alleging that the controversial figure has given justification to terrorist plotters with his outspoken views and that the banned group is ''the single biggest gateway to terrorism in recent British history''.

Mr Choudary said that al-Muhajiroun has been active since the 1990s meaning that a lot of people will have come into contact with the group, but denied any involvement in atrocities.

The Hope Not Hate report said: ''While painted by some in the media as a figure of fun, an extremist crackpot whose often outlandish media stunts are rightly ridiculed, Anjem Choudary has become a serious player on the international Islamist scene. Perhaps it is time to stop laughing at his ridiculous stunts.'' » | News agencies | Monday, November 24, 2013

Anjem Choudary: Jihad Milkshakes

Anjem Choudary is the unnervingly calm voice of the extreme Islamic sect Al-Muhajiroun. VBS met up with him in an East London park in the UK, where Choudary shared his views on promoting al-Qaeda’s just-right-of-center ideology over milkshakes. Most of the major news outlets have branded Choudary as a “hate preacher” who wants to kill all non-Muslims. He didn’t help matters much when he recently called for the assassination of the Pope. But Choudary, a British citizen, claimed between sips that he’s mostly interested in sharing the religion of peace with the West by bringing Sharia Law to the United Kingdom—and by turning Buckingham Palace into a beautiful mosque.

Islam4UK Boosted by Ban, Claims Leader

THE GUARDIAN: Controversial group says non-Muslims now want to join

The leader of a controversial Islamist organisation has boasted that the government's decision to ban it last week has boosted its popularity.

Anjem Choudary says his profile, and that of his group, Islam4UK, has soared as a result of the government's decision to proscribe it. "There's nothing like a government ban to make you popular," Choudary said.

The radical cleric, whose attempts to hold a march through the Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett prompted concerns that it would lead to civil unrest, claims his group has been inundated with requests from non-Muslims who want to join. "They think the government has run over our liberties and are disgusted by its actions," he said.

Choudary, who receives around £25,000 a year in benefits and has referred to the 9/11 hijackers as "magnificent", says he has been asked to give talks at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Leeds University. He warned that the government's actions would not stop his supporters from speaking out. "If they want to arrest me there are many others," he said. "You can't silence people."

The home secretary, Alan Johnson, banned the Islamist group – and its parent organisation al-Muhajiroun – last Thursday. The decision followed a threat from Choudary to lead a march through Wootton Bassett which marks the return of every fallen serviceman repatriated to nearby RAF Lyneham and has come to symbolise the UK's respect for its war dead.

In the ensuing outcry, Johnson introduced new laws that will make membership of the two organisations a criminal offence, punishable by up to 10 years in jail. >>> Jamie Doward | Sunday, January 17, 2010

Islam4UK’s Radical Spokesman Anjem Choudary Pledges to Keep Preaching

TIMES ONLINE: Anjem Choudary sits in a North London café, sips on a vanilla latte and then launches into a tirade about the decadence of the West.

With machinegun delivery, he expounds on numerous themes: British Muslims are suffering persecution because the Government rules by division; Sharia will solve all Britain’s ills; Western governments are carrying out terror attacks in the Middle East so they can be blamed on extremists.

His propaganda is peppered with colourful analogies. Moderate Muslims, for example, have lost their values and are like “vegetarians who eat beefburgers”. Holding court, with three young supporters hanging on his every word, it appears like business as usual for Mr Choudary. Except for one matter: we met on Thursday morning, when the Home Office ban on Islam4UK, Mr Choudary’s controversial group, had just come into effect. He and his supporters, dressed in traditional Islamic fashion, are defiant nonetheless.

Mr Choudary, a former solicitor whose plans to stage an anti-war protest in Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire caused widespread furore, told The Times: “Unless the Government can prove that you are ostensibly exactly the same organisation, doing the same things at the same time, it’s very difficult to clamp down.

“I’m not going to stop propagating Islam. I can still talk with journalists ... we can still go out publicly and talk about Islam. I could write a leaflet now ... and I could invite people to Islam.” The question he was unable to answer, however, was whether many people would actually be interested. >>> Fiona Hamilton, London Correspondent | Saturday, January 16, 2010

The order will come into effect on Thursday and make it a criminal offence to be a member, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Mr Johnson said the group had tried to escape proscription simply by changing its name.

He said the order would apply to the group's other names, including Al Muhajiroun.

"I have today laid an order which will proscribe Al Muhajiroun, Islam4UK, and a number of the other names the organisation goes by," he said.

"It is already proscribed under two other names - Al Ghurabaa and The Saved Sect. >>> | Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Islam4UK Loses the 'Freedom' It Claimed to Despise

THE TELEGRAPH – BLOGS: Islam4UK has been banned. It is now an illegal organisation membership of which is prohibited under anti-terrorisim law. Its spokesman, Anjem Choudary was quick to issue a statement denouncing this move by the Home Secretary as an outrage against democratic freedom – presumably this is the same democratic freedom which his organisation openly professes to loathe. Islamist Al-Muhajiroun Relaunch Ends in Chaos Over Segregation Attempt

THE GUARDIAN: An attempt to relaunch the controversial Islamist group Al-Muhajiroun ended in chaotic scenes after the management of the London venue that was to host the group's first meeting in five years cancelled proceedings, complaining "fundamentalist thugs" had tried to enforce the segregation of men and women.

Supporters of the group, which wants sharia law in Britain and has praised the 9/11 terrorists as the "Magnificent 19", were ordered to leave Conway Hall in Holborn on Wednesday night when it emerged that Al-Muhajiroun had placed bouncers on the doors and were not letting women into the main hall.

Speakers who had been invited to share a platform with Anjem Choudary, the group's leader, accused Al-Muhajiroun of inviting them under false pretences.

Douglas Murray, director of the Centre for Social Cohesion, said the platform of the planned debate was "completely unacceptable". "I'm perfectly willing to debate Anjem Choudary and Al-Muhajiroun's ideas," he said. "His ideas are not difficult.

They do not stand up. But it's very clear that this debate is not neutral. This was a segregated event, policed by Al-Muhajiroun's guards."

He said he had been invited to the event by a student society, Global Issues Society, but the Islamist group had hijacked proceedings.

Giles Enders, chairman of the South Place Ethical Society which runs the hall, took to the stage and explained that the terms and conditions of Conway Hall do not stipulate segregation. He then declared the meeting cancelled. >>> Robert Booth | Thursday, June 18, 2009
