Aussie Dad Devastated by Shock DNA Testing Revealing His Kids Aren't His | 60 Minutes Australia

Thanks to CSI and the other cop shows, DNA tests are no longer a mystery. Gone is the suspicion, now they're just another weapon in TV's war on crime. But it might be a different story if that weapon was turned on us, and that's not impossible. It's happening to Australian families every day. DNA testing, especially paternity testing is a booming business - fired up by suspicious husbands determined to prove that the child they're raising is actually theirs. And as you might imagine, that's opened up a whole new domestic battlefield with new charges of betrayal and revenge.

Richard III DNA Shows British Royal Family May Not Have Royal Bloodline

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The University of Leicester has studied the DNA of Richard III and found that there could be a break in the royal bloodline

When the body of Richard III was discovered in a car park in Leicester in 2012 archaeologists knew it was a momentous find.

But little did they realise that it might expose the skeletons in the cupboard of the British aristocracy, and even call into question the bloodline of the Royal family. » | Sarah Knapton, Science Editor | Tuesday, December 02, 2014

DNA Evidence Exonerates Death Row Inmate

A Louisiana man has become the eighteenth death row inmate to be exonerated by new DNA evidence since 1993. Damon Thibodeaux was absolved of the rape and murder of a relative following a seven-year investigation which produced DNA evidence contradicting his confession. Investigators say Thibodeaux's 1997 confession was drawn while under duress by detectives who allegedly took advantage of his exhaustion and fed him details of the crime. The 37-year-old had spent 23 hours per day in solitary confinement awaiting his execution. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.

Strauss-Kahn's DNA 'Found on Maid's Clothes'

US media are reporting DNA evidence now links Dominique Strauss-Kahn to the maid who accused him of sexual assault.

The Wall Street Journal says a sample submitted by the former head of the International Monetary Fund matches semen traces found on the woman's shirt.

Experts, however, urge against a "rush to judgment" based on the DNA test, noting that there are a range of possible explanations and that it does not prove an act of sexual violence.

Al Jazeera's Roza Ibragimova reports from New York.

Hitler 'Had Jewish and African Roots', DNA Tests Show

THE TELEGRAPH: Adolf Hitler is likely to have had Jewish and African roots, DNA tests have shown.

Saliva samples taken from 39 relatives of the Nazi leader show he may have had biological links to the “subhuman” races that he tried to exterminate during the Holocaust.

Jean-Paul Mulders, a Belgian journalist, and Marc Vermeeren, a historian, tracked down the Fuhrer’s relatives, including an Austrian farmer who was his cousin, earlier this year.

A chromosome called Haplogroup E1b1b1 which showed up in their samples is rare in Western Europe and is most commonly found in the Berbers of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, as well as among Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews.

"One can from this postulate that Hitler was related to people whom he despised," Mr Mulders wrote in the Belgian magazine, Knack. >>> Heidi Blake | Tuesday, August 24, 2010

US Blocks Genetic Discrimination

BBC: The United States Senate has unanimously passed legislation banning discrimination on the basis of people's genetic details.

The proposal, which passed 95-0, still needs approval from the House of Representatives before it becomes law.

It would allow only patients and their doctors to access data obtained through genetic testing.

Employers, unions and health insurance companies would be forbidden from discrimination via genetic information.

The Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy called it the "the first new civil rights bill of the new century".

He added: "Discrimination based on a person's genetic identity is just as unacceptable as discrimination on the basis of race or religion."

The bill would forbid health insurers from refusing coverage, or raising premiums, for healthy people based on genetic information.

Insurers would also not be allowed to require people to take tests which might show a predisposition to a disease.

And employers would be prohibited from using genetic information in decisions over hiring, firing, promoting or compensating employees. US Blocks Genetic Discrimination >>>

France Introduces DNA Tests for Migrants

BBC: France's parliament has passed a new bill that introduces tighter curbs on foreigners hoping to join relatives in France - including possible DNA tests.

The controversial bill was passed in both the country's National Assembly and in the Senate.

Supporters say it will speed up the process for genuine applicants and cite similar laws in other European nations.

Critics have attacked the law as racist and questioned the use of genetics as a basis for being allowed into France. French parliament adopts DNA bill (more)
