Poverty or Prosperity – What’s Your Choice?

Jan 7, 2024 | Really Britain has delayed making a decision about whether to embrace a race to the bottom with divergence from EU regs or to accept our rightful place is in Europe. Existing as a bargain basement on the shores of the world's most successful trading bloc is suicide!

The Tories

MARK ALEXANDER: The Tories, otherwise known as the Conservatives, have been in power since 2010. And what a dog’s dinner they have made of their governance! They have wrecked this county; they have wrecked its economy.

I write not as “a leftie”. Far from it, actually! I was raised as a Conservative voter; and I voted Conservative all my adult life. Until Cameron became the party’s leader. I took one look at him, and decided he couldn’t be trusted. So I voted for the LibDems instead. We ended up with a coalition government. But to put things simply, Brexit has put paid to my ever voting Tory again, put paid to my adherence to this party of clowns.

The Conservatives used to be the party we Brits could rely on to manage the economy well and efficiently. You don’t need me to tell you that this is no longer the case. The Conservatives have been in power since 2010 and our economy has never, in my lifetime, been in worse shape. Had the Tories a clue, they’d have fixed the economy by now. They haven’t! The economy is is dire shape. Especially because of Brexit, an ideology to which the clowns in the party are wedded.

The European issue was, and remains, a very complicated issue; it should never have been thrown to the people in the form of a referendum to decide. Why? Because even many a politician or economist cannot fully grasp the EU’s importance to our economy. However, to cut to the chase, what one MUST understand is this: The European Union is a market of 450 million consumers; so, on economic grounds alone, it should NEVER have been walked away from. No one in his right mind would walk away from the largest single tariff-free market in the world!

But more than this, far more than this, the European Union is a political union which has prevented European wars and has promoted peace. Countries which are integrated and whose economies are well and truly integrated are highly unlikely ever to go to war with each other. So many a Brit has always been wrong to look upon our membership of the EU simply as being of economic advantage. Our membership was far, far more than that. It was a vehicle of peace and stability in Europe.

It is my hope and dream that we Brits, sooner rather than later, will rejoin the European Union. Not with all those silly ‘opt-outs’ we once had; but as full, functioning members – as committed Europeans. European we are; and Europeans we will always be. No Tory will ever be able to change that!

Michael Lambert: Disastrous Sunak Govt. Sniggers at German Recession

Dec 30, 2023 | The UK government is happy to tell us that the German economy is in recession. This week I visited Aachen in Germany to see how things really are. I found the city to be quite prosperous and operating normally. Following Brexit, the UK economy is struggling with far worse to come. Germany has also had problems, especially following Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but the economy is based upon manufacturing high quality engineering products and seems likely to rebound once the worldwide economy begins to pick up.

I spoke with many people in Aachen who all appeared relatively optimistic for the German economy and seemed somewhat bemused at Brexit.

Aachen looks far more prosperous to me than most British towns. As you say, we are lied to by our politicians on a daily basis. Fact is, they have screwed things up — BIG TIME — and they have no idea how to get us out of the hole they have dug for us. Like you, Michael, I wish we were more like Germany. Everything about Germany is generally better: it's more prosperous; it's cleaner; it's more efficient; people are generally better educated; and on the whole, its architecture is far more interesting and decorative. And much else besides. But two things grieve me greatly: under Thatcher, our manufacturing sector was decimated; and so much of what was valuable was sold off to foreigners, leaving us Brits with the dregs. All for short-term gain. Britain's decline, which started around the time of the First World War has continued apace ever since. Brexit, of course, has only accelerated the process. Britain is a shadow of its former self. – © Mark Alexander

Brexit: Betrayal as Promises of Cheaper Food, Clothing & Footwear Turn to Dust

Dec 29, 2023 | The Brexit debate was dominated by the red bus and £350 million a week for the NHS after the result, but footage shows actually there were many promises on food, clothing and footwear being cheaper.

As we are offered a Brexit freedom to have smaller bottles of wine, what happened to the promises of cheaper food, clothing and footwear? Well we all know that inflation has pushed up prices for everything, but certainly food has seen the biggest price rises and that is largely because of Brexit barriers, removal of CAP and EU labour.

Britain Forgot How the EU Improved British Food!

Dec 26, 2023 | brexit is terrible for our food in Britain and is taking us back to the days when we were Bhe poor man of Europe.

Now, after Brexit, we British can look forward to the working-class feast of greasy bacon and eggs in a working man’s ‘caff’! Forget about the sophisticated, Continental foods like Brie, Camembert, Italian delicacies, etc. All because of SOBs like Nigel Farage, Richard Tice and tw*ts (supply your own vowel) like Jacob Rees-Mogg and Rishi Sunak. [This is proof here.] People who live in bubbles and who have little or no understanding of how much the European Union improved the lives of ordinary Brits since our membership of that wonderful organisation.

It is to be hoped that the influence of these ne’er-do-well politicians will perish. They deserve nothing but our collective scorn. – © Mark Alexander

Biden Ditches Trade Deal Talks with Britain

THE TELEGRAPH: UK's hopes for agreement fall to 'zero' after president came under pressure from own party about effects on US manufacturing

Joe Biden has shelved plans for a pact with Britain that could have paved the way for a full post-Brexit trade deal.

The US president has decided not to move forward with a “foundational” agreement prepared by the US Trade Representative’s Office, that would have included negotiations over 11 areas of trade and regulation, following opposition from his own party in the Senate.

Senate Democrats argued that it would not have provided sufficient protection for American workers, Politico reported.

The UK’s hopes for a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US date from before the Brexit referendum, and faced an early setback when Barack Obama told voters that Britain would be “at the back of the queue” for a deal if it left the EU.

But despite US support for an FTA in the early days of Donald Trump’s presidency in 2016, the chance of a deal has now fallen to “zero” under Mr Biden, the Government believes. » | Tony Diver, US Editor | Monday, December 18, 2023

Bill Browder Exposes Robert Jenrick’s Brexit Tricks as Nonsense, Speaks of Ukraine

Michael Lambert: They Really Think It Is Worse in the 'Corrupt' EU

Dec 9, 2023 | Last week Boris Johnson appeared before the Covid19 enquiry still unable to produce his WhatsApp messages for the crucial period when decisions about Covid19 were being made.

On Thursday Rishi Sunak gave a press conference detailing his latest attempts to 'Stop the Boats' by sending a handful of asylum seekers to Rwanda at enormous cost.

I received around 1750 comments in response to my video last week about rejoining the European Union. These are some of the comments from those who still believe that the UK was right to leave the EU. Many of these comments suggest, without any supporting evidence, that things are even worse in the EU and especially in Germany. Others suggest that the EU is corrupt and destined to break up.

Britain Facing Surge of Salmonella Cases because of Brexit

Dec 9, 2023 | Britain is facing a surge in salmonella cases due to a lack of post-Brexit quality checks on food, a union has warned.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) said the UK was seeing recurring cases of salmonella because meat, poultry and eggs have not been checked properly since leaving the EU. It comes as the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it was investigating a recent rise in cases of salmonella food poisoning linked to poultry from Poland.

“A number of the cases have involved the consumption of eggs produced in Poland and used in meals in restaurants and cafés,” said Tina Potter, head of incidents at the FSA.

More than 200 human cases of salmonellosis linked to poultry products such as eggs and meat were reported this year.

These Tories should be unceremoniously kicked out of office as soon as possible. The buffoons in that party are utterly stupid. Please note that I write as a lifelong, but ex-Conservative voter. Never would I vote for those clowns again! They have ruined this country. It would be hard to imagine how they could possibly have done more damage to this country in the last thirteen or so years than they have done.

Our country is not safe in Tories’ hands. Get the SOBs out of office now! And let the party die a natural death, just like the Whigs before them. The party is not fit for purpose. For starters, they spend taxpayers’ money like drunken sailors. Corruption is rife in the party to boot.

Why the LibDems don’t come out and say unequivocally that they intend to take the UK back into the EU at the earliest possible convenience is beyond my comprehension. This country desperately needs to go back into the European Union, even if we have to abandon the pound sterling and adopt the euro. Taking us back into the EU would be a vote-winner for the LibDems; indeed, I would go as far as to say that this policy alone could be the making of the party. It could knock the Tories into third place, into the long grass – where they belong.

UK Voters Want Closer Relationship with EU in ‘Significant’ Shift since Brexit

THE OBSERVER: Major study finds public see ties with Europe as more important than links with US and many ‘exhausted’ by ‘toxic’ debate

Protesters gather in front of the Foreign Office and Downing Street, demanding a new election and the UK's rejoining of the EU on 25 March 2023. Photograph: Sinai Noor/REX/Shutterstock

Almost twice as many UK voters now believe a close relationship with the EU is more important for peace, prosperity and security than ties with the US, according to a major new study of post-Brexit attitudes.

The report, based on extensive polling and discussion groups with people of all Brexit persuasions, finds that attitudes towards the EU are becoming more favourable across a range of policy areas, and that the entire Brexit debate is now far less toxic and more pragmatic.

This, its authors say, will give a potential Labour government “space and permission” to work towards closer links, particularly on issues of trade, security and defence, where a clear majority of the public is now in favour. The report by the independent thinktank British Future found that 52% of the public would now like the UK to have a closer relationship with the EU, with only 12% saying it should have a more distant one, and 27% in favour of maintaining the status quo. » | Toby Helm, Political editor | Saturday, December 9, 2023

Was John Major Right in 2016 about Brexit

Dec 5, 2023 | New report from Resolution Foundation sheds new light on Brexit impact on Britain together with new data on immigration. We were led to believe people wanted Brexit to reduce immigration, but in truth it has now quadrupled since Brexit and the economic impact is realising the predictions made by the Remain politicians. We need to ditch Brexit and get prosperity and food security back!

As a one-time, dyed-in-the-wool Conservative voter, it hurts me to say this, but it has to be said: The Tories of today are a bunch of tossers. They have got this country into the biggest mess I have ever known it to be in in my not-so-short lifetime. This country needs radical reform now if we are to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps. Labour does not have the answer. Its leader wants more of Thatcherism. That shows me clearly that the man doesn’t understand economics. The party that could offer a solution – the LibDems – is afraid of its own shadow! That party should be offering a speedy return to the EU.

These ne’er-do-wells — losers all when it comes to understanding economics — talk frequently about how this country needs economic growth; but they are totally clueless as to how to go about achieving it.

There are many ways to achieve economic growth. But the very first thing we need is a market for our goods. In voting for Brexit, we have walked away from the BIGGEST single market in the world – a market of 450 MILLION CONSUMERS. To talk of wanting economic growth at the same time as walking away from such a ready-made, tariff-free market is total bunkum and nonsense. One is speaking with forked tongue when doing so.

The second obvious thing that you need to achieve economic growth is for people to have money in their pockets to spend! Shops need customers with SPENDING POWER! It is the ordinary consumers that need the spending power, not the über-rich élite, whose needs, apart from the odd superyacht or private jet, are already met. It’s Joe Bloggs in the street that need a new fridge or a new freezer or a new car or some work done on his house, not the chap living in the mansion in the best part of town!

How do the Tories expect to achieve economic growth when tens of thousands of people can’t afford to put food on the table for their children and have to go to foodbanks for assistance? How do the Tories expect to achieve economic growth when poverty in the nation is at alarming levels? You can’t expect a poor man to go to the shops to have a spending spree on consumer goods. As for white goods, he will surely need them, but will surely have no money to pay for them. So no consumption there!

To achieve economic growth at home, people need money in their pockets. They need to be able to spend! Under the Tories, people have been strapped for cash for years. Living standards have been in steep decline for ages. How do do these plonkers expect to be able to achieve economic growth?

Then there is the Tories' reluctance to spend and invest in infrastructure, so sorely needed in this country. Look at the state of our schools, hospitals, roads and bridges! The state of many, many schools and hospitals is disgraceful. Not at all worthy of a first world nation.

The more one thinks about this Tory government, the more one realizes how totally USELESS the people in government are. Bumbling fools all!

This country needs radical change at the top. Anything less just will not cut the mustard. – © Mark Alexander

No 10 Daren’t Admit It, but Ursula von der Leyen Is Right: We’ll Be Going Back on Brexit

THE OBSERVER: The case for rejoining the single market and the customs union grows stronger by the day. A future Labour government can’t ignore it

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, says the direction of travel is clear: Britain will one day rejoin the EU. Photograph: Jean-François Badias/AP

There was little doubt who came ahead in the spat between Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, and Rishi Sunak last week over Britain rejoining the EU. She began her salvo acknowledging that the EU had “goofed up” in losing Britain, but that it would fall to her children’s generation “to fix it”. The “direction of travel was clear”. Britain one day would rejoin.

The substance behind No 10’s inevitable refutation was so threadbare that it bordered on the comic. But then there is no better defence to hand. The prime minister, intoned his spokesman, did not think Brexit was in danger, trying to reinforce the point by declaring: “It’s through our Brexit freedoms that we are, right now, considering how to further strengthen our migration system. It is through our Brexit freedoms we are ensuring patients in the UK can get access to medicines faster, that there is improved animal welfare. That is very much what we are focused on.”

Is that it? Apart from the fact the claims are at best half-truths, at worst palpable falsehoods, as a muster of Brexit “freedoms” they fall devastatingly short of the promises made during the referendum campaign. Recall the economic and trade boom, a reinvigorated NHS, cheap food, controlled immigration and a reborn “global” Britain strutting the world. It’s all ashes – and had today’s realities been known in 2016, we would still be EU members. » | Will Hutton | Sunday, December 3, 2023

The UK will have to re-join the EU at some point. It is inevitable. It is not a question of if, but of when. The UK will not thrive outside of the EU. The UK and the EU need each other: the relationship is symbiotic. The sooner we return to the fold, the better it will be for both parties. – © Mark Alexander

Byline TV: The Truth about Brexit: Britain Betrayed | Ultimate Documentary 2023 | Reupload

Byline TV is independent. If you feel that you would like to support this excellent media company, you can do so here.

There is absolutely no doubt that the few über-rich, über-powerful people at the top of British society sold the electorate a bill of goods. The British people, especially our young people, have been cheated out of their future opportunities in the largest single market in the world. They have also been cheated out of their rights as European citizens, affording them and us all, actually, the right to study, work, live and/or retire in any member country. And with full reciprocal healthcare arrangements! And this, all to give the élite the chance to avoid paying taxes and to be able to keep their money offshore. (The EU was going to close the loopholes which didn’t suit the likes of these unpatriotic people at the top.)

However, we can all take heart. Ursula von der Leyen recently indicated that our Brexit problems could be fixed by our re-entry into the Union. This MUST happen. It has to happen if the impoverishment of the nation is to be avoided. BREXIT MUST BE REVERSED ASAP. – © Mark Alexander

Michael Lambert: UK Has No Future Outside the EU

Dec 2, 2023 | The UK economy is in a very bad state. Cost of living crisis, high taxes, NHS and other public services in crisis, businesses collapsing and councils going bankrupt.

Rishi Sunak caused a diplomatic incident this week by refusing to meet the Greek Prime Minister after he had responded to a question from Laura Kuenssberg about the Elgin Marbles.

Sunak, King Charles and David Cameron each flew to the Cop28 in the UAE in separate planes where Sunak would be the Prime Minister who had rolled back on EVA's and was presiding over the opening of a new coal mine and giving hundreds of new licences for oil exploration in the North Sea.

Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England said Britain's growth outlook was the worst he had ever seen and that there would be little or no growth for the next two years.

The EU has done a better trade deal with New Zealand than the one negotiated with the UK. Eurozone inflation at 2.4% is half that of the UK.

Sunak for the Conservative Party and Starmer for Labour both say they will resolve the UK's problems with economic growth. But where will this growth come from? The UK is struggling noticeably and, at the same time China is rapidly becoming the world champion of green technology and the U.S. is investing hundreds of billions of dollars.

Alone, outside of the EU, the UK has no future and more and more people are coming to understand this. 92% of young people and over 60% of the population believe that we would be better off inside the EU. Ursula von der Leyen has said that the UK is on a clear direction of travel toward rejoining the EU. Michel Barnier has said repeatedly that the door is always open for the UK to return. It is likely that the UK will begin negotiations towards rejoining the EU sooner rather than later

Michael, this is a superb analysis of the dire situation this country finds itself in. I agree with your conclusion that we will re-join the EU sooner rather than later. If we don't, this country is going to be in deep, deep trouble.

Rishi Sunak, as you rightly say, is pathetic; further, his snubbing of the Greek prime minister was, quite frankly, rude in the extreme. The man has shown a total lack of savoir-vivre. In good, plain English, the man showed his ignorance!

We are living through very depressing times indeed. Our politicians aren't making our lives any easier, either. Never mind! Onwards and upwards! We'll arrive home in the EU sooner than we might think. The hill is steep, so the climb is going to be tough, but it can be climbed. To borrow from the motto of my old grammar school, I will say: We ought. We will. We must. – © Mark Alexander

UK Should Rejoin EU to ‘Fix’ Brexit, Says Ursula von der Leyen

THE TELEGRAPH: European Commission president says she tells her children ‘we goofed it up’ when discussing UK’s departure from EU

The United Kingdom should rejoin the European Union to “fix” Brexit, Ursula von der Leyen has said, after Labour pledged to forge closer ties with the bloc if elected.

The European Commission president said “we goofed it up” when asked if Britain could ever reverse Brexit on Tuesday night in Brussels.

She was speaking amid much improved UK relations since the signing of Rishi Sunak’s new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland in February and after the shock victory of Geert Wilders, who wants the Netherlands to leave the EU, in Dutch elections last week.

“First of all, thank God, with the Windsor agreement, we had a new beginning for old friends. Very important,” Mrs von der Leyen said at an event hosted by the Politico website.

“And then I must say, I keep telling my children, you have to fix it. We goofed it up. You have to fix it. So I think here, too, the direction of travel, my personal opinion is clear.” » | James Crisp, Europe Editor | Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Sunak Risks Fuelling Inflation with High Taxes and Brexit Red Tape, Retailers Warn

THE GUARDIAN: Shop price inflation eased to 4.3% in November but ministers’ plans could lead to higher prices, BRC says

UK inflation has fallen back before this year’s pivotal Christmas shopping season. Photograph: Carl Court/Getty Images

The UK’s largest retailers have warned Rishi Sunak that his government risks prolonging the cost of living crisis by driving up the cost of doing business on the high street with Brexit red tape and higher taxes.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said a number of measures laid out by the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, in last week’s autumn statement risked adding to inflation next year.

After soaring to a 41-year high last autumn, inflation has fallen back before this year’s pivotal Christmas shopping season. The BRC said its measure of annual shop price inflation eased for the sixth month in a row to 4.3% in November, down from 5.2% in October. The decline does not mean shop prices are going down, only that they are rising less rapidly.

However, the industry trade body warned that retailers were facing headwinds in 2024 from “government-imposed” measures – including tax increases and Brexit red tape – which risked fuelling inflation.

The cost of managing post-Brexit import checks and labelling rules, due to come into force next year, are also likely to be passed on to shoppers, it said. » | Richard Partington, Economics correspondent | Tuesday, November 28, 2023

Sunak is superrich; unfortunately, however, he is not supersmart! In today's interconnect world, no one who is supersmart would embrace the silly notion of Brexit! To do so is tantamount to displaying geopolitical ignorance. The pursuit of Brexit, therefore, was, is, and will forever remain a fool's mission! Anyone who thinks that this small, post-imperial nation with a rapidly ageing population can become the economic powerhouse of the world with super high levels of economic growth is deluded, economically illiterate and, quite frankly, foolish. To talk, as Jeremy Hunt did, of turbo-charging economic growth shows us that the Chancellor is given both to bouts of fantasy and to bouts of hallucination, both possibly in equal measure!

There is only one route to economic success for this über-proud nation and that is inside the European Union. No imaginative, magical thinking is going to change this fact; for indeed, a fact it truly is. Indeed, it is not only a fact, but a harsh reality.

Belonging to the European Union is like belonging to the European family of nations, to which we indubitably belong whether we are inside of it or outside of it. The advantages of belonging to the European family from the inside are incalculable, both in economic and political terms. I therefore say to all, my fellow countrymen, and to my brothers and sisters in Europe, here and now: Brexit must be reversed as quickly as possible. Both for the good of this nation and for the good of Europe itself. This nation is stonger in Europe and Europe is stronger when we are in it. Europe needs to be whole, it needs to be free, and it needs to be strong. The stronger and the more united Europe can be, the better. Only when working together, each nation being as helpful and co-operative with the other as is possible — or as the Arabs would say, working as one hand — can Europe ever hope to be geopolitically strong and powerful.

I repeat: Brexit must be reversed as quickly as possible. No ifs, no buts. Der Brexit muß schnellstens rückgängig gemacht werden. Le Brexit doit être annulé le plus rapidement possible. – © Mark Alexander

The Truth about How Brexit BETRAYED Britain | Ultimate Documentary 2023

Nov 15, 2023

Let's not mince words here. Brexit has been a BLOODY DISASTER! Were it to be 1789 in France, the guillotines would have been sharpened and put to use! The Tory party, once the party one could depend on for common sense and a modicum of fairness, has turned into a party of scumbags! Scumbags with posh accents, maybe, but scumbags nevertheless. Most of the élite in the Conservative Party – if that is not a tautology! – are criminal. – © mark Alexander
