And the debate goes on

Six years after the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the free world was celebrating victory! Five years after the heinous crime of 9/11, the debate goes on and on and on: We haven't even come to a definitive decision as to what we are fighting yet!

Of course, there are differences in the nature of the war we are fighting now from the one we fought between 1939 and 1945. But there are also similarities. Then, as we are doing now, we were fighting against dark forces, fighting against tyranny, fighting against a people who had no respect for freedom, fighting against an implacable enemy, an enemy hell-bent on dominating the world.

After a period of appeasement, it became increasingly clear to all right-thinking people that the enemy would have to be confronted if the free world was to remain in tact. People then, though, were not in the grip of the disease of political correctness. As a result, they could see clearly who their enemy was, and there grew a determination to defeat that enemy: National Socialism.

At the present time, we are still in a period of appeasement similar to the lead up to 1939 when war broke out. There prevails a feeling that if we make concessions to the enemies, then they will come around, and let us live in peace. They won’t! Appeasement, by its very nature, is weakness. If there is one thing that Muslims despise, it’s weakness. The Islamic world is patriarchal. They have no time for weakness. Concessions, to them, equate with weakness. They only embolden them in their struggle to dominate the world.

There is another important similarity between then and now. At that time, we were fighting a political dogma: Nazism. At this time, we are also fighting a political dogma: Islam. Unfortunately, this political dogma is clothed in a deity. It comes complete with ‘Allah’s words’ and ‘Allah’s messenger’! But do not be fooled! Islam is a ‘religion’ like no other! It is nothing short of a total political system, with its very own laws and legal structures, the Shari’ah.

To complicate matters further, all Muslims are taught that the world is divided into two: Dar ul Islam, or the ‘House of Islam’, and Dar ul Harb, or the ‘House of War’. Muslims believe it is their God-given duty to fight in the way of their Lord, Allah, Rub al‘ameen, ‘Lord of the Worlds’, until the ‘House of War’, the home of the infidels, has been incorporated into the ‘House of Islam’. The fight will not be given up. At best there can be respites.

What is actually happening is clear to see; yet there is a great reluctance on the part of our leaders to admit to what is truly happening. The fact of the matter should be obvious to all: the Muslim world is fighting the jihad, or holy war, in order to conquer the world for Allah. America, seen as it is as the archenemy of Islamic values, has become the main enemy of Muslims worldwide. Hence, the United States is known as the ‘Great Satan’, and they call for its death. ‘Death to America’ is the cry from many a mosque throughout the world, and from many a street corner, too.

The problem for us is made more complicated because the Islamic world, dominated as it is by the Middle East in general, and Saudi Arabia in particular, is the home of Islam. It is also home to the one commodity the West needs in great abundance: oil.

Westerners show little desire to do without this commodity. It is, after all, one of the engines of our economies. Out of a lack of vision and short-sightedness, the West has wasted nearly forty years of research time to find a viable alternative source of energy. Where alternatives are available, Western leaders are reluctant to further their use.

This leaves us dependent in no small measure on Middle Easterners. The trillions of dollars that have made the Middle East rich beyond anyone’s wildest dreams enable our Saudi ‘friends’ to spend billions of dollars worldwide to buy influence in the West. They buy up our businesses, build mosques, build schools, build Islamic propagation centres, and fund university chairs. Of course, Saudi Arabia, being the home of the pernicious brand of Islam known as Wahhabism promotes that extreme brand of Islam in the West.

Fact is, in short, we are funding the jihad against ourselves!

Muslims despise America and are intent on destroying its influence in the world. Why do Muslims hate America so much? Well, there are many reasons too numerous to mention. But here are some: America is seen as the home of capitalism, with all its evil, debauched, hedonistic, godless, fun-seeking, entertainment-obsessed ways. Muslims see Americans as choosing the enjoyment of life over piety.

Moreover, America is successful economically in a way that Muslims in most parts of the world could only dream of. Muslims in the Middle East are rich by happenstance: oil has made them rich. They happen to have it in abundance. They have not become rich by working for their wealth; rather, they have become rich simply because they have this natural resource aplenty. Americans, by contrast, have become rich through intelligence, progress, resourcefulness, creativity, and sheer business acumen. This is an enviable state of affairs.

Then there’s the concept of freedom. America espouses freedom for all. Freedom is anathema to Muslims. To Muslims, the only part of freedom they understand is the freedom to worship Allah and his messenger! That’s the only freedom they are interested in!

In addition, there are two very important matters. America supports and stands up for Israel, and Muslims hate Israel with a vengeance. Muslims, as we all know, are anti-Semitic in the extreme. They despise the fact that the US, with all its power, could have the temerity to stand up for the Jews.

To complicate matters still further, the jihadis hate the fact that America keeps the Saudi royal family in power. Many devout Muslims see the Saudi royal family as apostates, people who have left Islam, for they view them as debauched, and see that their home country is run as a private business, very much as Nicolae Ceausescu ran Romania up until 1989. They despise the Americans for its support of a rotten régime. The Islamists are even more determined to Islamize America to be able to change its political course.

In order for America to be victorious in this battle of cultures, it needs a volte-face in its foreign policy. Not one to appease the Muslims, but one to ensure the West’s ultimate victory over its enemy: Islam.

To do this, we need strong leadership: strong leadership in the US, in Europe, and in the rest of the free world. We also need leaders with vision, determination, courage, and conviction. Leaders with the will to win, and leaders prepared to take the uncomfortable decisions necessary to drive these dark forces back into the desert sands, where they truly belong.

President Bush may have done his best. But his best is not yet good enough. I would suggest that in his remaining years in office that he come to recognize the forces working against his country. The enemy needs to be called by its proper name. This war of the twenty-first century is a war between Western and Islamic culture. Furthermore, he needs to get tougher on the enemy, for it is only strength our enemy understands.

To allow unfettered access to the West for Islam is something that will only complicate matters still further. After all, could Nazism be propagated in the United Kingdom during World War II? Could communism be propagated in the US in the post-War years? Certainly not! It would have been unthinkable to allow these ideologies to be propagated! Yet Islam has been allowed to grow apace in the West post-9/11!

It helps us not one jot to say that Islam is a religion, and we have freedom of religion in the West. Let’s have freedom of religion, by all means. But in Islam, we have a religion like no other: Islam is, first and foremost, a political ideology. The kind of religion that the founders of the US had in mind when the Constitution was drawn up was something quite different. They were referring to religions that are personal and spiritual in natural. Islam is not. Islam is communal and political and trans-national. Are we really being sensible in allowing a 'religion' to grow and grow in the West which has as its main goal the supplanting of our political system with a totally different set of laws based on a totally different ideology?

To add insult to injury, Christianity, and all other religions, are disallowed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and their practice is severely restricted in most other Islamic countries, too. Moreover, Muslims have no shame in disallowing other religions to be propagated, either. This is asymmetry if ever I recognized it!

The debate needs to stop. The time has come to take off our kid gloves. The time to fight the good fight is HERE and it is NOW. We have no time to waste. We really do not have the luxury of time.

In addition, people need to start preparing for the enormous struggle that lies ahead of them. They must be prepared to relinquish many comforts, and many liberties hitherto taken for granted; and they need to be prepared to sacrifice. For truly, no war was ever won without sacrifice!

Ladies and gentlemen, previous generations have sacrificed so much for the freedoms you and I enjoy today. They sacrificed for the sake of their children, and for the sake of their children’s children. The time has come for you and me to do the same for our children! Start preparing to sacrifice now. The debating needs to stop.

Mark, Thank you for this superb, albiet grim, piece on the fifth anniversary of 9/11. It is a sober reminder that until we name the enemy and confront the enemy and tell the enemy that 'enough is enough' we can't hope to drive out the terrorists. The so-called 'war on terror' is simply a euphemism as our politicians are too weak and too dishonest and too greedy to call it what it really is, fearing the loos of votes and hence money. As you so eleoquently remind us, the enemy is Islam, pure and simple. Until we are willing to confront and condemn it, we can't hope to win. BRAVO for a first-rate 9/11 post.

Thank you, Big Cat Lady. As you say, honesty is what we need. But who is courageous enough to be honest about it all?

Excellent essay once again Mark. You are quite right, people will need to learn to sacrifice much of what we take for granted. I think George Bush's greatest folly has been that he and his administration thought that they could fight this war without it truly affecting the populace in general, and this they set out to do and has been the focus of their approach, to minimise wars cost to the electorate. Not an ignoble endeavour by any means, but not exactly a smart move either, for unfortunatly this absolves the people of any sense of involvement in the conflict. Now while this may be viewed as a benefit by most casual observers, with a little bit of thought it will be realised that without involvment, there is no connection to the purpose to which the state is directing its efforts. People have simply been absolved of any need to focus on the issue at hand, namely that war is a deadly serious business, for while it is far away, it has no direct impact on their daily existance, unless of course they have loved ones caught up in the actual conflict. No, for the majority, it is simply something reprehensible on the news each night, something to be condemned as being beneath the virtue and dignity of their comfortable and unaffected lives, so with a bravura display, they strut their moral pieties before any audience that will pay them heed. Reality is soon to intrude, but untill then we will simply have to endure the snortings of a swinish multitude. All we can do is prepare ourselves for the brutality which is about to descend upon us all, and be ready to react within the ensuing confusion, for when reality strikes there will be many many unprepared souls, lost and adrift, and confusion will indeed reign for a time.

Human nature being what it is, all sorts of wacked out conspiracy theories will and do arrise and what's worse as loony as they are, they are still given consideration, especially by the media who have lost all sense of ethics and morallity and seek to follow a sense of self-righteous virtue, formulated from emmotions devoid of any rationalisation, for reason and logic are always an immpediment to an easy option. Here is a Gramscian/Marxist principle at play, namely that a people without power are inevitably and always the victims of those who do possess real power, no matter how each party plays its hand, the oppressed can do no wrong while the oppressor can do no right. Such are the verities of moral relativity. Indeed for the media to take a principled stand within the context of this war, they would, by virtue of the nature of our enemies, be placing themselves in mortal danger; the thugs of Hamas, Hizbollah and other assorted Islamic facists don't play nice, nor do they play by any rules but their own. This of course does not excuse the media for their collusion with the enemy, nor should it absolve them from the consequence of that collusion, for when this war eventually hots up, which it inevitably will, then they should be made to pay the price for that betrayal. And it is betrayal and will cost us in blood later on. I guess you could say that I have a very negative attitude towards my fellow human beings, well mainly those who are in denial about events as they are unravelling, I'm with you Mark, appeasement is folly and in the end becomes really only cowardice hiding behind a mask of principle.

If the Western world had presented a united front towards Islam at least from 9/11, then we would have been much further along the road to containing this rabid expansionist aspiration of the Muslim fanatics, with the consequence of far fewer deaths on both sides. Alas, here we are five years on, and this war hasn't even finished shaping up as to who believes there is a conflict or who denies there is anything amiss, and all this before the fight really gets started. Far too many people are simply in denial that radical islam presents any real existential threat to our continued existance, they simply cannot concieve that our way of life is not a permanent fixture in the world, after all, the daytime soaps, put out by the media are not affected in any way, so why should they worry, for As The World Turns so are the days of our lives and to far too many that is the reality of their miserable existance, to live in an empty bubble, divorced from the pain of reality, for there, safety and security can be found, free from worry and fear...but at what cost to the rest of us.For far too many still labour under the illusion of Fukuyama's "End of History" thesis. At this rate, Osama bin Laden will achieve his objective by simply bleeding the Western economies dry, before anything is accomplished, and who here would doubt that our political elites would rather we were utterly destroyed before they would ever admit that they had allowed our economies to crash by simple incompetence and mendacity That they personally had failed in the job which they swore that they were the best and most fit to do and so were elevated to their position of prominence within our societies. These political elites which currently infest the corridors of power are not leaders of men, they are simply soulless opportunists, and they will wreck our societies if left to their own devices, all the while strutting across the world stage as if they were the very essense of proberty and ethics.

I look at the political discourse, or at least what passes for such around the world, and I shake my head in despair, for there is no direction, no leadership, simply a rabble making a lot of noise. No wonder Ahmadnutjob down the well fancies his chances, there is no one of any consequence to stand and face him down. Look at the disparity in power between the West and the Islamic world, it should be no contest, but our society is frozen in the headlights by indecision, while our leaders can only squabble and bicker like children, totally unable to formulate and present a plan of anything other than a utopian fantasy with no hope of success, because it was formulated in the sterile confines of Washington's or London's or Paris's prevailing philosophy, all the while ignoring the dictates, the hopes and the aspirations of Islam and its mad designs.

No, before we can face and deal with Islam, we must first confront the demon which stalks the polity of the Western democracies...political correctness and its minions, for this is what is holding us back. Sadly the only way I see these chains being broken is when a large number of Westerners are killed in the next one, or even a couple of sneak attacks. It would seem that death alone, or more rightly the actual prospect of it, is the only thing which will focus the mind of many poor fools in the Western world. For as long as they themselves are free from the fear of death, then there is nothing to fear; as long as they can deny the danger, they need not fear, and without fear there is no need to act.

Sorry Mark, but your excellent essay stirred me to rant!

For me, this appeasement is the most infuriating part of what's happening today. The West should be demonizing the enemy and thereby uniting the forces of good against the forces of evil. But what is the West doing? Fretting over the sensibilities and sensitivities of Muslims! I won't type in here the nasty condemnation I have for their "sensibilities and sensitivities"!

Mark and Always

Thankyou both, I am heartened by your words, though in truth, I almost erased the post, as I felt that it did ramble a bit.

There was one line from Edmund Burke which I was trying to incorporate, but just couldn't find a way in the context of this rant, namely in reference to ignorance and those who strive against it, and from memory it goes.."and soon to be trod under the hooves of a swinish multitude", but sadly was only able to incorporate the last two words. What a great line. Ah well, another time. I did come across another line of his which is a perfect metaphor for our age, "Resolved to die in the last dike of prevarication", sums it all up kind of succintly.

Have a great day guys.

Exactly! The people have to have a stake in the war that is being waged. When they do, it also concentrates the minds of the leaders; and it certainly concentrates the minds of the people.

This war is far too sanitized.

People have simply been absolved of any need to focus on the issue at hand, namely that war is a deadly serious business, for while it is far away, it has no direct impact on their daily existance, unless of course they have loved ones caught up in the actual conflict.

Yes, that's right. It doesn't impact enough on the people; therefore, all they seem to be able to do is criticize.

You know, the MSM and Moonbat parade are willfully ignorant of the wrath that "pure" Islam is spreading across the globe. They refuse to see. I hear conservative leaders say that another attack is what is needed to embolden the American public. I unfortunately disagree. 9/11 was and is an immense tragedy. Something that goes beyond the very worst nightmares any American had on 9/10/01. Pain. Suffering. Rage.

The War on Terror had begun. But America's habits of watching football, reading magazines, and anything other than being engaged as a citizen quickly took back over. We lost focus as a nation. This problem of non-participation by John and Jane Q. Public is the very reason another attack would only galvanize the public a little while longer. Meanwhile, the Islamic "purists" keep planning, waiting, and acting. Over and Over.

The MSM is part of American thought. I wish I could have faith in America as a country to endure and fight. I CERTAINLY DO HAVE faith in our soldiers. But America is drifting slowly to the left. Even 9/11 has not redirected the nation as a whole. Unless there is a major change in the collective psyche, which is produced by what people focus on, which is predominately the MSM in all its forms, I cannot see a final victory.

We almost elected Gore. We almost elected Kerry. We are very close to electing Hillary. These politicians should not have a prayer if the public was awake and paying attention. But, we keep on keeping on.

We loose focus. The terrorists will never loose focus. Unless things change, I am afraid that when the vast majority of Americans wake up from the stupor they seem to be in, we will be in a very different world.

The problem we have today is that Westerners have become affluent and comfortable. Many do not wish to have their lives upset by trouble. They wish to go on enjoying themselves, and they feel they can let other people deal with the problems. They do not wish to be inconvenienced; moreover, they have short attention spans, and are ignorant of history, to boot.

The War on Terror had begun. But America's habits of watching football, reading magazines, and anything other than being engaged as a citizen quickly took back over. We lost focus as a nation. I fear you are spot on in your analysis. They might start to concentrate their minds when they start to feel the pinch of having their lifestyles changed through the introduction of Shari'ah!

Sad, very sad, but possibly quite true. Contrast this with the determination of our enemies! Chalk and cheese!

We loose focus. The terrorists will never loose focus. Unless things change, I am afraid that when the vast majority of Americans wake up from the stupor they seem to be in, we will be in a very different world.

How true!

You made many excellent points. We still haven't even named our enemy. Five years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, US servicemembers were drinking Sake and hanging out with geisha girls.
Five years after 911 and we haven't successfully defeated the Taliban. In fact, they have reclaimed certain portions of Afghanistan.
Just recently one of Afghanistan's governors was killed and then a bomb exploded at his funeral.
Just two days ago we had 190 Taliban fighters lined up at a funeral for one of their own. The United States decided not to kill them because they were at a grave site. The double standards will lose us this war.
Muslims use mosques and cemeteries to supply weapons and to conduct operations against the United States and we are playing by these stupid laws.

I also in principle agree that these words are true:
No, before we can face and deal with Islam, we must first confront the demon which stalks the polity of the Western democracies...political correctness and its minions, for this is what is holding us back.
However, we (busy citizens) must concentrate on the most immediate danger. Trying to fight PC, media etc. while Islam is taking over our political system will only add to the confusion.

Majority of people feel seriously threaten by the spread of this vile ideology (Islam) and it is up to us to take advantage of it.

In short, there is a need for well organized political/lobbying movement wich could successfully counterweight 'the petrodollar influnce' Islam has on our weak politicians.

Welcome back! Your presence has been missed.

I agree with you. It's amazing that they haven't even found OBL yet. We can land on the moon, yet OBL cannot be found!

We are trying to prosecute this war and not upset the sensibilities of the Saudis. The Saudis know where OBL is. In Islam, the family is everything; therefore, somebody in his extended family knows where he is. Of that, I am sure. The Saudis royal family should have been told from the start: "Go find OBL and bring him to us, or else we'll stop propping up your régime!" I guarantee you that OBL would have been found long ago! The longer Bush is president, the less respect I can have for him. The man is not up to the job; and he is trying to fool the public, too. He has strong connections with the Saudis. Something rotten is going on there! And I can smell it even from here!

We cannot win this war without fighting the true enemy - Islam.

Of course, we can't. I have been saying that all along. And the day is fast approaching when we shall have to make a choice: Fight Islam and save our civilization, or let our civilization go down the tubes. It's as simple as that, actually.

... we (busy citizens) must concentrate on the most immediate danger. Trying to fight PC, media etc. while Islam is taking over our political system will only add to the confusion.

I agree. The media could be shut up, once and for all, actually, if the country were placed on a proper war footing, as it was during World War II. In times of war, the government must take control of the media.

Majority of people feel seriously threaten by the spread of this vile ideology (Islam) and it is up to us to take advantage of it.

In short, there is a need for well organized political/lobbying movement wich could successfully counterweight 'the petrodollar influnce' Islam has on our weak politicians.

Then why don't you start your own political lobby group there in the States? That's a great idea!
