Francois [sic] Hollande's Socialists Poised to Seize Parliamentary Majority

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: French President Francois [sic] Hollande's Socialists and allies came out on top in first-round parliamentary elections on Sunday, and were poised to secure the majority needed to push through tax-and-spend reforms.

The election also saw a surge in support for Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front, which wants to ditch the euro and battle against what she calls the "Islamisation" of France.

The Socialists, Greens and allies won around 46 per cent of the vote, ahead of the 34 per cent for ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy's right-wing UMP party and its allies, the final results released by the interior ministry showed.

Pollsters TNS Sofres, IPOs and OpinonWay agreed that the Socialists and close allies might win between 283-329 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly or potentially as many as 329 and could hold power in the parliament without relying of the votes of the Greens or the anti-capitalist Left Front.

Hollande defeated Sarkozy in last month's presidential election and wants voters to give him a strong mandate to enact reforms as France battles Europe's crippling debt crisis, rising joblessness and a stagnant economy.

If next week's second round confirms Sunday's results, it will boost his status in Europe as champion of the movement away from German-led fixation on austerity towards growth, which he favours as the solution to the economic crisis. » | Monday, June 11, 2012

IMF Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn Arrested in New York over Alleged Sex Attack on Manhattan Hotel Maid

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, is being questioned by police in New York over an alleged sex attack on a hotel maid, after he was arrested and removed from a plane on the tarmac of John F. Kennedy airport.

Mr Strauss-Kahn, a prominent French Socialist politician who was expected to challenge Nicolas Sarkozy for the country's presidency next year, allegedly attacked the 32-year-old maid in his room at the Sofitel, near Times Square.

The 62-year-old is said to have emerged naked from his bathroom and forced himself on the woman, who had entered to clean his room at about 1pm on Saturday. He then "attempted to sexually assault her", Paul Browne, a New York Police Department spokesman, said on Saturday night.

Unconfirmed reports alleged that Mr Strauss-Kahn had forced the maid to perform oral sex on him, before she left the room and alerted colleagues, who called 911. Mr Strauss-Kahn then departed for JFK airport, leaving his mobile phone in the hotel room.

He was apprehended in the First Class cabin of Air France Flight 23, which was 10 minutes away from taking off for Paris, at about 4.40 on Saturday afternoon. He was escorted off the plane by two plainclothes detectives, who did not need to use handcuffs. » | Jon Swaine, New York | Sunday, May 15, 2011

Nicolas Sarkozy and François Fillon Split Over How to Handle National Front

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: An embarrassing split between President Nicolas Sarkozy and his prime minister, François Fillon, emerged on Tuesday over how to deal with the threat from France's far-Right National Front.

Marine Le Pen's National Front (FN) made historic gains in the first round of local elections on Sunday, only trailing Mr Sarkozy's UMP party by two percentage points on 15 per cent.

The Socialists, who came top on 25 per cent, are calling for a "Republic front" against the FN in next Sunday's second round, where the far-Right is present in almost 400 "cantons" in the country's 100 departments. The Left is urging its supporters to vote UMP in cantons where it is an also-ran to keep the FN out.

Several UMP moderates called on its electorate to vote tactically. But Mr Sarkozy refused to explicitly urge his supporters to vote for the Left in the 200 or so cantons where the race is between Socialists and the FN. He told party leaders that a call to vote Socialist "would be tantamount to sending a signal of collusion between the UMP and Socialist Party".

However, on Monday night, prime minister Fillon, who has reportedly been ill at ease with attempts by Mr Sarkozy to veer Right to attract FN support, caused confusion by telling UMP members: "You must vote against the National Front". » | Henry Samuel, Paris | Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Nicolas Sarkozy’s Right-wing UMP Thrashed in French Elections

THE TELEGRAPH: Nicolas Sarkozy will seek to relaunch his embattled presidency on Monday after his Right-wing party suffered a crushing defeat in France’s regional elections, seen as a test of his popularity.

Mr Sarkozy’s Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) was on course last night to lose in all but one of 22 regions in mainland France. As one analyst put it, the president must reinvent “le Sarkozysme 2.0” — a new ideology to woo disillusioned voters in the run-up to 2012 presidential elections.

A coalition between the opposition Socialists and Greens, whose party is called Europe Ecologie, swept the floor in the second round vote marked by a low turnout - 51 per cent - and the lowest score for the Right in more than three decades.

As polling stations closed, exit polls gave the Socialists and Greens 54 per cent of the vote, the UMP 36 percent and the far-Right National Front just under nine per cent.

Despite pushing hard-line policies on immigration and security, the president’s allies were weakened by a strong showing for the National Front, which won no regions but was in 12 run-offs.

The UMP’s sole consolation, besides holding Alsace, was taking the Indian Ocean island of Réunion. >>> Henry Samuel in Paris | Sunday, March 21, 2010

France Socialist Party Opposes Burka Ban

BBC: France's opposition Socialists have come out against a law banning the burka - even though they remain firmly opposed to the garment.

The announcement comes ahead of a parliamentary report on the issue that is due out later this month.

Last summer, French MPs held hearings on whether to ban the Muslim veil, which covers the body from head to toe.

President Nicolas Sarkozy had said the burka was "not welcome" in France, home to Europe's largest Muslim population.

Mr Sarkozy has left open the idea of introducing legislation to ban the burka.

While the Socialist Party opposes the wearing of the burka, it was "not favourable" to a legal ban, said party spokesman Benoit Hamon. >>> | Wednesday, January 06, 2010

French Socialists Criticise Sarkozy for Holidaying on Bolloré’s Private Yacht

FINANCIAL TIMES: Nicolas Sarkozy has sailed into trouble by spending his post-presidential election holiday on a private yacht, belonging to one of France's richest men, off the coast of Malta in the Mediterranean.

Officials from the opposition Socialist party criticised the incoming president for taking a three-day break away from the spotlight on a 60-metre yacht owned by Vincent Bolloré, the billionaire corporate raider.

"What is a problem, is the style of this holiday, the fact that it is on the yacht of a rich businessman and we don't know today if it was the Republic that covered the expense of this trip," said François Hollande, leader of the Socialist party.

"We thought the Chirac presidency was over and it was what Mr Sarkozy doubtless called 'a rupture' but I see that it is more a question of continuity," he said, referring to outgoing president Jacques Chirac's penchant for luxury holidays.
