Swedish Queen's Family 'Made Fortune from Jewish Factory Seized by Nazis'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Sweden's royal family has been rocked by allegations that the father of Queen Silvia made a fortune from a factory seized from Jewish owners in Nazi Germany.

Swedish TV4 broadcast a documentary detailing how Walter Sommerlath, a German Nazi Party member, had bought the factory from Efim Wechsler, a Jew.

The transaction was part of the so-called "Ayranisation" of such enterprises according to the Nuremberg Laws which stripped Jews of their rights and property. The factory allegedly made Ack Ack guns for the Luftwaffe and also parts for tanks.

When she married in 1976 the Queen's German father denied he had ever been a member of the Nazi party. That fiction was exposed some years later by a Swedish newspaper which proved he joined the movement in 1934.

Earlier this year Queen Silvia spoke for the first time about it in a TV documentary in which she said he was not "politically active"[.]

"The truth about Queen Silvia's father, which she doesn't want to tell herself or her family, is that he joined Hitler's Nazi party beginning on December 1st, 1934," said Swedish investigative journalist Bosse Schon [sic] [Schön]. >>> Allan Hall in Berlin | Wednesday, December 01, 2010

WikiLeaks: 'Cocky' Duke of York Told to Steer Clear of Policy Issues by Vince Cable

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The Duke of York has been warned to avoid commenting on policy issues after his candid views on anti-corruption investigations were made public by WikiLeaks.

Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, said that corruption investigations were "not a matter" for the Duke, adding that it would be "helpful" if he steered clear of policy issues in future.

Mr Cable was speaking after leaked documents showed that the Duke, Britain's trade envoy, described the British government as "stupid" during a business brunch at which he surprised an American ambassador with his foul language.

The Duke also railed against the “idiocy” of a Serious Fraud Office investigation into allegations of bribery surrounding BAE Systems and spoke “cockily” in a discussion that “verged on the rude”, according to the ambassador. >>> Gordon Rayner, Robert Winnett and Toby Harnden in Washington | Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Royal Wedding: Bishop Predicts Prince William's Marriage to Kate Middleton Will Only Last Seven Years

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: A leading bishop has been criticised after publicly denouncing Prince William’s engagement to Kate Middleton and predicting that their marriage will only last for seven years.

The Rt Rev Pete Broadbent, the Bishop of Willesden, chastised the “nauseating tosh” surrounding the announcement and likened the Prince and his fiancée to “shallow celebrities”.

He said the Royal Family was full of “broken marriages and philanderers” and expressed disappointment that the wedding would cost the public “an arm and a leg”.

Bishop Broadbent’s comments, made on his Facebook page, provoked anger and embarrassment amongst Church of England members and MPs. >>> Victoria Ward | Sunday, November 21, 2010

The Queen Dropped from Victoria's Legal System

THE TELEGRAPH: The Australian state of Victoria is to dump the Queen from legal proceedings only days before Prince William arrives on a goodwill visit.

From Jan 1, all criminal court cases will be brought in the name of the director of public prosecutions instead of the monarch as traditionally.

Announcing the change, Rob Hulls, the state's attorney-general and acting Labour premier, said: "Having cases presented in the name of the Queen of England is an outdated colonial tradition that has really passed its use-by date.

"Substituting the director of public prosecutions for the Queen or Regina reflects the legal and political independence from the United Kingdom and its monarch that has been achieved by Australia."

He denied the change was a snub to Prince William, who arrives in the state on Jan 21 during a visit that has been described as an opportunity to better acquaint himself with Australia.

Mr Hulls, an avowed republican, said: "This is all about making our laws and legal procedures relevant. It's no more or less than that." >>> Paul Chapman | Thursday, December 17, 2009

Britain's New Royalty -- The Oil Potentates

”And I say to my friend Brown, the prime minister of Britain; the Queen of Britain, Elizabeth; Prince Andrew, who all contributed to encouraging the Scottish government to make this historic and courageous decision, despite the obstacles.” – Colonel Qaddafi

THE HUFFINGTON POST: Where British Tradition once mandated subjects to genuflect before their royals, Britain is now busy instructing itself on how to properly render homage by prostrating themselves nose to ground before their new potentates, the oil barons of Araby.

There he was, Libyan Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi who had been found guilty of the murderous Lockerbie air disaster that took the lives of 270 people, stepping off his specially chartered Libyan aircraft to a cheering crowd upon his arrival at the airport in Tripoli. Eichmann being received by a cheering crowd in Germany would have been the same, not in dimension, but certainly in principle.

Al-Megrahi's release was being trumpeted by Mr. Kenneth MacAskill, Scotland's Justice Secretary, as an act of compassion for a man said to be diagnosed with prostrate cancer and having but three months to live. It was a decision met with outrage by family members of the victims, and a general outcry of disgust throughout much of the world ranging from President Obama to FBI Director Robert Mueller, "makes a mockery of the grief of the families who lost their own on December 21, 1988".

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that the act of releasing al-Megrahi had been the the decision of the Scottish Secretary alone. But was it?? Or as commented in the Financial Times, politicians are now prepared to go to extra lengths to maintain good relations with his country -- the richest in North Africa and an important supplier of energy to Europe. Even more pointedly according to Lord Trefgarne, Mr. al-Megrahi's release had opened the way for Britain's leading oil companies to pursue multibillion dollar oil contracts with Libya which had demanded Mr. al-Megrahi's return in talks with British officials and business executives.

Scandalous? Perhaps. But then again maybe not if this has become Britain's new norm. Kowtowing to moneyed Middle Eastern/North African oil interests may not be new but it does assume a singular level of malice when it is dealt with in such a brazen manner trashing tradition and principles of law, in the lust for lucre or responding to outright intimidation and blackmail. >>> Raymond J.
