Neo-Nazi Murder: Greeks Protest Rise of the Far-Right

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: The alleged murder of a leftist rapper by a neo-Nazi has shocked Greece, where thousands have taken to the streets to protest the rise of the far-right Golden Dawn party. Athens says it is determined to take action.

As Pavlos Fyssas was laid to rest in Athens on Thursday morning, thousands of Greeks took to the streets to pay their respects to the anti-fascist rapper and demonstrate against the escalating violence engulfing the country.

When he was stabbed to death early on Wednesday, the 34-year-old became the most prominent victim of a wave of right-wing extremism that, if left unchecked, some fear may degenerate into generalized instability as social tensions rise on the back of the country's economic crisis.

A 45-year-old man, Giorgos Roupakias, has been arrested for the crime and, according to police, has confessed to both the murder and his ties to the far-right Golden Dawn, which has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and is now Greece's third most popular political party. » | Georgios Christidis in Thessaloniki | Thursday, September 19, 2013

Intelligence Report: Number of Islamists in Germany Grows

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: In its annual report on extremist activity in Germany, the country's domestic intelligence agency has identified a surge in support for Islamists and growth in the number of influential neo-Nazi music groups.

During the past year, Islamist organizations experienced a surge in support in Germany according to an annual report from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution obtained by SPIEGEL in advance of its planned public release on Tuesday.

The report states that the number of members and supporters of groups like Milli Görüs, the largest Islamist organization in the country, or Hezbollah in Germany rose from 38,080 in 2011 to 42,550 last year.

The largest growth was seen among members and supporters of Salafists, which increased from 3,800 to 4,500, the government agency stated. Last year, German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich of the conservative Christian Social Union moved to ban three Salafist groups. » | dsl/SPIEGEL | Monday, June 10, 2013

Greek Extremists: 'Golden Dawn' Fosters Ties with German Neo-Nazis

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: The Greek right-wing extremist party Golden Dawn has established contacts with German neo-Nazis in Bavaria. The group, which is represented in Greek parliament, is also attempting to set up a cell in the southern German state.

The Greek right-wing extremist party Golden Dawn is establishing close contacts with Bavarian neo-Nazis and began setting up a cell in Nuremberg last year. The party, known in Greek as Chrysi Avgi, even held a conference in the southern German city recently.

Bavaria's state intelligence agency is particularly interested in meetings that have been taking place between right-wing extremists from Greece and those in Bavaria.

An umbrella organization of Greek communities in Germany has called on all Greeks in Germany to reject attempts by neo-Nazis to promote "violence, inteolerance and social cannibalism." » | cro/SPIEGEL | Monday, February 04, 2013

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Norwegian mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik has written a letter to Beate Zschäpe, the last surviving member of Germany's neo-Nazi terrorist cell the National Socialist Underground. In the text obtained by SPIEGEL, Breivik praises Zschäpe for her alleged crimes and says she should be "extremely proud."

Olympic Scandal: German Rower Suspected of Right-Wing Ties

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: The German Olympic team has been rocked by a scandal involving a member of the women's eight rowing team. According to media reports, Nadja Drygalla is suspected of having ties to the right-wing extremist scene in Rostock. She has voluntarily left the Olympic Village and an investigation may follow.

A scandal has erupted in London over the alleged association of a German athlete with neo-Nazi elements back home. Nadja Drygalla, a member of the German women's eight Olympic rowing team has left the Olympic Village, according to a press release issued by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) Thursday night.

Although the release did not specify the reasons for her sudden departure, German public broadcaster ARD reports that the 23-year-old ex-police officer is suspected of sympathizing with right-wing extremist ideology and of reportedly being associated with an official from the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD), which authorities describe as racist, revisionist, hostile to the constitution and sympathetic to extremist right-wing ideology. The party is, however, legal and has representatives in both state and municipal assemblies, primarily in eastern Germany. » | jtw -- with wires | Friday, August 03, 2012

Greek New [sic?] Dawn's Ilias Kasidiaris Sues Women Over TV Row

BBC: The spokesman for Greece's far-right Golden Dawn, who slapped a left-wing politician and threw water over another on a TV debate, is suing his victims.

Ilias Kasidiaris went to an Athens court to announce he would sue the women for defamation.

Mr Kasidiaris is also suing the TV station, Antenna, for illegal detention after staff tried to stop him leaving following the incident last Thursday.

Golden Dawn will be contesting a critical Greek election this Sunday.

Mr Kasidiaris avoided an arrest warrant for the attack, lying low until it expired.

Under Greek law, the arrest warrant for a minor crime must be carried out by midnight the day after the incident took place for an immediate trial - otherwise it goes to judicial procedure and a much later trial date is set. » | Monday, June 11, 2012

Greeks Protest against Violent Neo-Nazi MP On the Run

THE GUARDIAN: Golden Dawn spokesman who assaulted leftwing politicians evades arrest as protesters denounce fascism

Protesters across Greece poured on to the streets of cities Friday night, denouncing the "dark force" of fascism as the spokesman of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party continued to elude arrest more than 24 hours after his extraordinary on-screen assault of two female leftwing politicians.

Nine days before fresh general elections, the fault lines in Greek society are deepening.

And late on Friday, as a police manhunt for Ilias Kasidiaris [F] showed little sign of yielding a positive result, the divisions were on full display.

While anti-fascist demonstrators descended on public squares, supporters of Golden Dawn crammed into a hotel in Athens to hear the party's leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, rail against immigrant "scum" and the corrupt and crooked system that had brought the crisis-hit country to such a "dark place".

"There is growing polarisation. People are becoming increasingly radicalised thanks to all the rhetoric in the EU and here against the anti-austerity leftist majority and that is opening the door for Golden Dawn," said veteran activist Petros Constantinou. "We are demonstrating not only against the rise of the far right but against those who have enabled fascism to take root." » | Helena Smith in Athens | Friday, June 08, 2012

Press Freedom Alarm Over Greek Party's Treatment Of Journalists

GUARDIAN – GREENSLADE BLOG: International press freedom watchdogs are watching the political situation in Greece with growing alarm following the treatment of journalists by the far-right Golden Dawn party.

After Golden Dawn obtained 7% of the vote, a press conference was staged by its leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos. Before his arrival, waiting reporters were ordered by party members to stand as a sign of respect.

Journalists who refused to do so were then expelled from the room.

This move came as little surprise to the Greek journalist Xenia Kounalaki. Last month, she wrote an article about Golden Dawn in the German weekly Der Spiegel, which prompted an attack on her on the party's website. Read on and comment » | Roy Greenslade | Tuesday, May 08, 2012

France Investigates Neo-Nazis after School Killings

CNN: Toulouse, France -- Authorities are investigating the possibility that neo-Nazis are behind a shooting spree that left three children and a teacher dead at a Jewish school in France, Interior Minister Claude Gueant said Tuesday.

That is one of several leads authorities are following after the Monday killings -- the third fatal attack on people from minority groups in the south of France in the space of eight days.

The country's southwest region remained on scarlet alert, the highest possible level, after the teacher and three children were gunned down at the Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse.

The gunman at the Jewish school wore a camera on his chest during the attack, Gueant told Europe 1 in an interview Tuesday. » | Saskya Vandoorne and Diana Magnay | CNN | Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Police Investigate Links between Neo-Nazi Group and Far-right Party

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Police in Germany are investigating links between a neo-Nazi group that murdered nine Turkish and Greek immigrants, and a far-right party with representatives in two state assemblies.

Germany has more than 400 police and prosecutors looking into how the "National Socialist Underground" could have stayed undetected until last month, when two members were found dead in a burnt-out mobile home and a third handed herself in to police.

The head of Germany's crime squad, Joerg Ziercke, said the arrest this week of a 35-year-old man in Jena in east Germany where the cell was based indicated a link to the anti-immigrant National Democratic Party (NPD). » | Thursday, December 01, 2011

Number of Violent Neo-Nazis Rising in Germany

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Germany saw an increase in the number of violent neo-Nazis by 600 to 5,600 last year, according to the country's domestic intelligence agency. In the year 2000, there were just 2,200. Still, the far-right scene as a whole is shrinking, and the NPD party is losing members.

The number of violent neo-Nazis in Germany rose by more than 10 percent to 5,600 people in 2010, the head of the country's domestic intelligence agency said in an interview published on Monday.

"The neo-Nazi scene that is prepared to commit violence has become larger. It grew by 600 to 5,600 people in 2010," Heinz Fromm, the president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper. In 2000, the number had been far lower, at 2,200.

Fromm said the number of neo-Nazi anarchists, a relatively recent trend consisting of violent youths, often masked, bent on committing violence at far-right demonstrations, had increased from 800 to 1,000 people last year.

The overall number of right-wing extremists in Germany fell last year by 1,600 to around 25,000, said Fromm. » | cro | Monday, April 18, 2011
