After Being Attacked, Dutch Woman in Dubai Charged with Insulting Islam

BIKYA NEWS: DUBAI: A Dutch woman living in Dubai pleaded not guilty in a court on Monday after being charged with insulting Islam and insulting the police after she had called them to report a personal attack. She said that while she had been drinking, she did not insult religion or the police officers.

“I’m not guilty for insulting the policemen and religion, but yes I consumed alcohol,” the 28-year-old Dutch woman told the court.

It is the latest in a string of “crimes” against woman after they had initially called the police.

She could face up to one-year in prison or deportation. » | Sharifa Ghanem | BN | Thursday, April 04, 2013

Abusing Women Is Un-Islamic: Saudi Mufti

ARAB NEWS: JEDDAH: Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has strongly warned against maltreating women in any form and said this is totally against Islam.

In his Friday sermon at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, the mufti said only bad people treat women badly.

"The psychological or physical abuse of wives, daughters and sisters is against the Islamic Shariah and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)," he said.

Al-Asheikh warned husbands and fathers who take the salaries of their wives and daughters that they are committing anti-Islamic acts.

"The fathers who make it a condition to have their daughters' salaries before they give their consent for marriage are equally wrong. Husbands who force their working wives to share in home expenses are committing erroneous acts. Islam made it the responsibility of the man to spend on the house," he told the worshippers. » | Muhammad Humaidan, Arab News | Friday, April 08, 2011

Shock TIME Cover Illustrates the Plight of Women Under the Taliban

GUARDIAN – BLOG – GREENSLADE: Time magazine's latest issue carries this disturbing cover image. It's a portrait of Aisha, a shy 18-year-old Afghan woman who was sentenced by a Taliban commander to have her nose and ears cut off for fleeing her abusive in-laws.

Aisha posed for the picture because she wants the world to see the effect a Taliban resurgence would have on the women of Afghanistan.

Her picture is accompanied by a powerful story on how Afghan women have embraced the freedoms that have come from the defeat of the Taliban — and how they fear a Taliban revival.

Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor, writes: "I thought long and hard about whether to put this image on the cover... First, I wanted to make sure of Aisha's safety and that she understood what it would mean to be on the cover. Continue reading and comment >>> Roy Greenslade | Friday, July 30, 2010

European Rights Court Rules Turkey Abused Women

REUTERS: ISTANBUL - The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that Turkish police had abused two teenage girls suspected of supporting Kurdish separatism and authorities had failed to investigate their complaints properly.

Judges found credible the claims that Nazime Ceren Salmanoglu and Fatma Deniz Polattas, who were 16 and 19 at the time, were physically and sexually abused when police arrested them in 1999 during an operation against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), according to a statement from the court.

The abuse included sodomy and forced virginity tests, which violate conventions against discrimination, the statement said.

Turkey has vowed to wipe out torture to meet European Union membership criteria on human rights. The European Commission said in its annual progress report it was "concerned" about an increase last year in the number of complaints of abuse. >>> © Thomson Reuters 2009 | Tuesday, March 17, 2009
