Harvey Milk: US Navy Launches Ship Named for Gay Rights Leader

BBC: The US Navy has launched a ship named after a gay rights activist forced to resign from the service because of his sexuality in the 1950s.

The USNS Harvey Milk was launched in San Diego on Saturday in a service attended by Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro and Milk's nephew, Stuart.

It is one of six new ships to be named after famed US civil rights leaders.

Others include former Chief Justice Earl Warren and slain presidential candidate Robert Kennedy.

Milk served as a diving officer and Lieutenant aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake during the Korean War. But he was forced out of the service following two weeks of interrogation about his sexuality in 1955.

He later became one of America's first openly gay politicians, elected in 1977 to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

But a year later he was shot and killed by Dan White, a former city supervisor with whom he had frequently clashed. » | BBC | Sunday, November 7, 2021

Why Is Washington Re-activating Its Second Fleet? | Inside Story

The US has announced it is re-establishing its naval presence in the North Atlantic as Russia increases its patrols in the area. It's part of a military build-up from both sides that hasn't been seen in decades.

The Second Fleet was disbanded in 2011 after more than six decades of service. The reason? To save money, and as part of a restructuring operation. But what does this Cold War rhetoric mean? And how will Moscow respond?

Wife Stood between bin Laden and Seals

STUFF.co.nz: One of Osama bin Laden's wives stood between him and US Navy Seals as the world's most-wanted terrorist was gunned down in an airborne assault on the al Qaeda leader's safehouse deep in Pakistan.

He was holed up less than 1.6 kilometres from the country's military academy and not far from the capital of Islamabad.

Details emerged yesterday of the life and dramatic death of bin Laden, the day after President Barack Obama made the stunning announcement the al Qaeda leader had been killed.

Obama, while assured bin Laden probably was in the compound, did not know with certainty the 10-year hunt for the notorious son of a Saudi Arabian construction magnate was at an end. The realisation came when bin Laden's body was carried to one of four US Special Operations helicopters that had ferried in the American force deep inside Pakistan. One of the craft was damaged on landing and blown up before the return journey to Afghanistan. » | Tuesday, May 03, 2011
