Suella Braverman’s ‘Divisive Politics’ Make Her Unfit to Be Leader, Says Tory Mayor

THE GUARDIAN: Opposition among senior Tories grows after ex-home secretary derides Progress Pride flag being flown over Home Office

Suella Braverman’s “divisive rightwing politics” make her unsuitable to lead the Conservative party, Ben Houchen, the Tory Tees Valley mayor, has said, amid a backlash after the former home secretary said her party had been too liberal.

A series of other Conservative figures attacked Braverman after she used a speech in the US to describe the Progress Pride flag as a “monstrous thing”, saying she was angered when it was flown over the Home Office against her will.“Our problem is us,” she told the National Conservatism conference in Washington DC. “Our problem is that the liberal Conservatives who trashed the Tory party think it was everyone’s fault but their own. My party governed as liberals and we were defeated as liberals. But seemingly, as ever, it is Conservatives who are to blame.”

She added: “What the Progress flag says to me is one monstrous thing: that I was a member of a government that presided over the mutilation of children in our hospitals and from our schools.”

Her comments appear to be an allusion to the prescribing of puberty blockers or to other medical procedures undergone by some people as they transition, though most are not available for children. » | Jessica Elgot and Peter Walker | Tuesday, July 9, 2024

Braverman Denies Spreading Poison within Party to Get Rid of PM

THE GUARDIAN: Former home secretary refuses to back Rishi Sunak’s deportation plan and says Tories are in a ‘perilous situation’

Former home secretary Suella Braverman has denied spreading poison within her own party to get rid of Rishi Sunak.

In a combative interview after the resignation of the immigration minister Robert Jenrick on Wednesday, Braverman told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme she was a “plain speaker” and not trying to remove the prime minister.

However, she refused to back Sunak’s Rwanda deportation plan, key to fulfilling one of his five pledges to the British people, insisting “the reality and sorry truth is, it just won’t work”.

She also again warned the prime minister of the “perilous situation” the Conservatives found themselves in given his pledge to stop the boats at the start of the year. » | Aletha Adu, Political correspondent | Thursday, December 7, 2023

The Conservative Party Is Dead

Nov 18, 2023 | I thought I saw a sign of life as Suella Braverman was sacked but Sunak has confirmed that the moral leadership is missing- this is a party on the last stages of decay, what Bercow called "a rotting corpse". What is left, its zombie pretence of authority and life is controlled by the shady forces of the ERG [European Research Group] and its part-time members (each eager to stake out an afterlife in media or business) can no longer command respect. It is sad to see such a death.

Former Deputy PM Condemns ‘Dictatorial’ Braverman Rwanda Plan

THE GUARDIAN: Damian Green says call for legislation to override legal obstacles is ‘most unconservative proposal I’ve ever heard’

A former deputy prime minister and Conservative MP has attacked Suella Braverman’s latest plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda as “unconservative” and “dictatorial”, as the former home secretary continues to divide her party with her outspoken interventions.

Damian Green, who also served as an immigration minister, said on Friday that Braverman’s proposal to pass a law to get around the legal obstacles to the Rwanda plan identified earlier this week by the supreme court would be “the most unconservative proposal I’ve ever heard”.

Green was responding to an article by the former home secretary in Friday’s Telegraph, in which she suggested parliament should pass a new emergency law to override several pieces of domestic and international legislation. The article is the former home secretary’s latest intervention as part of what allies say will be a “grid of shit” for the government after her dismissal on Monday.

Green told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “This is the most unconservative proposal I’ve ever heard. You know conservatives believe in a democratic country, run by the rule of law. Dictators like Xi [Jinping] and [Vladimir] Putin would prefer to have the state completely untrammelled by any law.” » | Kiran Stacey, Political correspondent | Friday, November 17, 2023

Suella Braverman is a hard-hearted woman. There's a very good word for her in the English language. Alas, it would be unseemly for me to publish it.

This heartless woman doesn't belong in the Conservative Party. The Party is in danger of being destroyed by her – in danger of being thrown into the dustbin of history! That woman would have surely felt at home in the Third Reich!

The woman needs to be starved of the oxygen of publicity. The Telegraph is giving her far too much oxygen. In publishing so many of her articles, that newspaper is beginning to resemble the popular newspaper in Hitler's Germany, the Völkischer Beobachter, Hitler's mouthpiece! If the Conservative Party wants to survive and thrive again, I would suggest that it turn back from extreme right-wing policies and become a one-nation party once more. Brexit has ripped this country into shreds. Just like Humpty Dumpty, it has had a great fall! And just like Humpty Dumpty, it needs to be glued back together again, not torn even further apart by harsh, divisive, ill-thought-out, far-right, populist policies put forward by numpties like Suella Braverman! – © Mark Alexander

How Brexit Has Changed British Politics Forever

Nov 14, 2023 | In this new Federal Trust video, John Stevens and Brendan Donnelly discuss the dismissal of Suella Braverman and the appointment of David Cameron. Does this represent a new political path for the Conservative Party and Rishi Sunak? Or is it simply the latest throw of the dice for a divided Party that will be reversed before Christmas?

'You Have Failed': Braverman Accuses Sunak of 'Betrayal' in Stinging Attack | ITV News

Nov 14, 2023 | Suella Braverman has accused Rishi Sunak of "betrayal" in a stinging attack following her sacking as home secretary. The senior right-wing Tory - tipped as a future replacement for Mr Sunak - said the PM had “manifestly and repeatedly failed to deliver” on key policies.

In a resignation letter, she said his “distinctive style of government means you are incapable" of achieving his priorities, particularly his pledge to stop small boat crossings. Mrs Braverman urged the PM to “change course urgently”, telling him he has led the Conservatives to “record election defeats” and that his “resets have failed and we are running out of time”.

Number 10 responded to say the prime minister remains focused on stopping the boats and "believes in actions not words".

It comes amid a right-wing rebellion which has been growing in her party following a major reshuffle in which she lost her Cabinet job.

I wonder what Suella is cooking up in her cauldron for the beleaguered Rishi? Her brew is surely not yet fully cooked; it must be simmering right now. Rishi had better brace himself for the bitter concoction that awaits his dégustation. – © Mark Alexander

Braverman Plots Tory Rebellion on Rwanda Plan after Stinging Attack on PM

THE GUARDIAN: Sacked home secretary urges Rishi Sunak to change course in letter and accuses him of breaking ‘pledge to the British people’

Suella Braverman has launched an astonishing personal attack on Rishi Sunak, describing the prime minister as weak and dishonest and claiming he reneged on promises to push through a series of controversial policy pledges.

In a brutal three-page letter published a day after she was sacked as home secretary, Braverman warned Sunak that she now intends to spearhead a Tory rebellion over the government’s Rwanda plan.

“Someone needs to be honest: your plan is not working, we have endured record election defeats, your resets have failed and we are running out of time. You need to change course urgently,” she wrote.

Suella Braverman Sacked as Home Secretary after Article Criticising Police

THE GUARDIAN: PM fires cabinet minister after unauthorised Times article claiming police favour leftwing protesters

Rishi Sunak has sacked Suella Braverman as UK home secretary after she was blamed for inflaming tensions over Armistice Day protests and saying police favoured leftwing protesters.

A government source told the Guardian: “Rishi Sunak has asked Suella Braverman to leave government and she has accepted.”

Her dismissal is expected to form part of a wider reshuffle of Sunak’s team, with Thérèse Coffey, the environment secretary, and Steve Barclay, the health secretary, believed to be also likely to go.

While Jeremy Hunt has been tipped to be moved as chancellor, this is seen as less imminent given this month’s autumn statement. » | Peter Walker, Deputy political editor | Monday, November 13, 2023

Whether sacked or not, Suella Braverman could stir up a new Tory civil war: If the PM doesn’t get rid of her, he’ll look weak; if he does, she’ll rail from the backbenches. Is this all part of the home secretary’s grand plan? »

Far-right ‘Defends’ the Cenotaph to the Echo of Home Secretary’s Words

THE OBSERVER: Tension built all week about the Gaza march on Armistice Day. In the end, the far-right sparked violence. Then huge peaceful crowds surged through London

Never has the Cenotaph, in its 103 years of standing sentry on Whitehall, been “defended” on Armistice Day by a Port Vale fan supping a can of Stella Artois.

“I’m here in case the jihadists get past the police, who’ll probably just let them through anyway,” said Ben Neale, 22, from Tunstall, Staffordshire. “If they do come, they’ll soon wish they hadn’t.”

As it transpired, it was some of his fellow football supporters, backed aggressively by elements of the far right, who broke violently through police lines, toppling over metal barricades, throwing missiles and temporarily forcing officers back as they surged towards the Cenotaph on the anniversary of the end of the first world war. » | Mark Townsend | Saturday, November 11, 2023

Michael Lambert: Sadistic Bully Braverman Targets the Weakest

Nov 11, 2023 | As winter approaches, it is said that around 10,000 homeless people in this country are living on the streets and sleeping rough. I ask why it is, when we are so clever and so advanced, why it is that, despite being so we are unable to find a way of solving the problem of the homeless.

Similarly, it seems impossible to understand, looking at the Israeli - Palestinian conflict, how resolution of conflict cannot be solved other than with military force.

It seems so wrong that so many innocent children should have to suffer the consequences of war.

Earlier this week, King Charles, when opening Parliament, seemed to treat all that he was reading with contempt. He made it very clear that he has no time for the Sunak government or their programme.

Finally, both Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman appear to be making important decisions based, not upon the nation's interests but upon their personal political futures. I believe that Braverman's description of homelessness as a lifestyle choice was crass, insensitive and stupid and that in saying so, she may well have ruined any chances of becoming Tory leader.

Rishi Sunak Under Pressure to Sack Suella Braverman over Met Criticism

THE GUARDIAN: Opposition parties call for removal of home secretary as inquiries launched into article on pro-Palestine march

Rishi Sunak is under growing pressure to sack Suella Braverman after she ignored Downing Street advice and published an explosive article accusing the Metropolitan police of political bias.

Amid claims that the prime minister is too weak to remove the home secretary, ministers joined with senior police officers in accusing Braverman of stoking “hatred and division” before a pro-Palestinian march on Saturday.

Five opposition parties publicly called for her removal from office on Thursday after Downing Street said the Times article – in which Braverman claimed that unnamed police officers were guilty of “double standards” and “played favourites when it comes to demonstrators” – had not been signed off. » | Rajeev Syal, Peter Walker, Daniel Boffey and Vikram Dodd | Thursday, November 9, 2023

Protesters Call on Suella Braverman to Stop ‘Stirring Up Hatred and Fear’

Nov 4, 2023 | Protesters have called on the Home Secretary Suella Braverman to stop “stirring up hatred and fear”.

A group of campaigners gathered outside the Home Office in Westminster on Saturday in opposition to Ms Braverman’s comments on refugees and tents in public spaces.

Weyman Bennett, co-convenor of ‘Stand Up To Racism’ said the Home Secretary should “put some handcuffs on herself and hand herself in to the nearest police station”.

The group of peaceful protesters called for Ms Braverman to “stop the hate” as they heard speeches, sang songs and chanted outside the Home Office in central London.

Speaking at the protest, Mr Bennett told the PA news agency: “We’re here because there’s a racist running the Home Office. Suella Braverman is a bigot and is enabling the far-right to attack our basic democratic rights.

Charities Criticise Suella Braverman for Claim Homelessness Is ‘Lifestyle Choice’

GUARDIAN INTERNATIONAL: Crisis, St Mungo’s and other groups write to home secretary to say blaming people for being on the streets increases their risk of harm

Homelessness charities have criticised the home secretary after she described sleeping rough as a “lifestyle choice”, sparking a widespread backlash.

Organisations including Crisis, Centrepoint, St Mungo’s and Pathway responded to Suella Braverman’s purported plans to crack down on the pitching of tents in urban areas, which she largely blamed on individuals “from abroad”.

A letter from the charities reads: “Sleeping on the street is not a lifestyle choice. Laying blame with people forced to sleep rough will only push people further away from help into poverty, putting them at risk of exploitation. At the extreme end, we will see an increase in deaths and fatalities, which are totally preventable.

“People sleeping rough frequently experience violence and abuse. The impact on their physical and mental health is significant. The average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is just 45 for men and 43 for women. This is not a life people choose.” » | Tom Ambrose | Sunday, November 5, 2023

Suella Braverman is a heartless, uncaring, unfeeling woman of privilege! She should be thoroughly and utterly ashamed of herself! That woman should be sacked! If Rishi Sunak had gonads, she would be – forthwith! Were I to be in Sunak’s position, she’d be gone!

These poor homeless people are living on the streets because they have fallen on very hard times, in large part, I would imagine, because of harsh, Tory policies of austerity which were introduced by those two ultra-privileged gits, Cameron and Osborne! They are the ones who started the welfare-slashing fest!

Had this prime minister anything about him, were he to have any political nous, he would devise a strategy to get these people off the streets by giving them a little start in life. That would be the compassionate thing to do, the Christian thing to do, the humane thing to do!

This Tory government is a disgrace. It needs to be kicked out of office! A.S.A.P. This is the very same government that is itching to slash taxes for the super-rich!

If God really does exist, it is to be hoped that the fires of Hell are already being stoked in preparation for these cruel, political fraudsters. – © Mark Alexander

Michael Lambert: Failing Home Secretary Demonises Migrants

Sep 30, 2023 | Suella Braverman as Home Secretary presides over a Home Office which is in disarray. 1000 Met police officers are under investigation, only 5% of crime is solved and the borders are in chaos.

Immigration is a constant problem which Rishi Sunak has pledged to solve. Given the weakness of Rishi Sunak, she is the most powerful woman in the country. Braverman invokes memories of Germany in the 1930's! In recent years the rights of UK citizens have been much reduced, whereby the UK is now a police state. It is even an offence punishable by imprisonment to hold a sign which may offend the authorities.

Last week Braverman went to Washington to deliver a speech to the right-wing think tank American Enterprise Institute. It was a speech just a few days before the Tory party conference designed to boost her claim to be the successor to Sunak.

The speech and subsequent interviews were racist and dishonest. She presented dogwhistle arguments about the threat of migration and how it is the biggest threat that the world currently faces.

Her Rwanda policy involves swapping asylum seekers in the UK for 'vulnerable' deportees from Rwanda, another terrible deal which has cost the British taxpayer £140 million.

Braverman, by removing and restricting rights and by imposing restrictions, is turning the UK into a fascist state.
