Trunkenheitsfahrt: Strafbefehl gegen Ex-Bischöfin Margot Käßmann

Wegen ihrer Trunkenheitsfahrt muss Margot Käßmann ein Monatsgehalt (ca. 3000 Euro) Strafe zahlen und für mindestens 10 Monate, maximal 12 Monate den Führerschein abgeben. FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG: Die EKD-Ratsvorsitzende, Margot Käßmann, tritt mit sofortiger Wirkung von allen ihren Ämtern zurück, bleibt aber Pastorin der Landeskirche. „Mein Herz sagt mir ganz klar: Ich kann nicht mit der notwendigen Autorität im Amt bleiben“, sagte sie am Nachmittag auf einer Pressekonferenz in Hannover. Die 51 Jahre alte Käßmann, seit 1999 Landesbischöfin der größten evangelischen Landeskirche und seit Oktober vorigen Jahres als Ratsvorsitzende Sprecherin der deutschen Protestanten, bezeichnete ihre Fahrt als erheblichen Fehler, aus dem sie nun die Konsequenzen ziehe.

Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) hat den Rücktritt „mit Respekt und Bedauern aufgenommen“. Nach Angaben von Regierungssprecher Ulrich Wilhelm sagte Merkel: „Ich habe die Zusammenarbeit mit Bischöfin Käßmann sehr geschätzt.“ Die EKD-Synodenpräsidentin Katrin Göring-Eckardt und der stellvertretende EKD-Ratsvorsitzende, Nikolaus Schneider, erklärten: „Ihr Rücktritt ist ein schwerer Verlust für den deutschen Protestantismus. German Drink-driving Bishop Quits
BBC: The head of Germany's Protestant Church has resigned, four days after being caught drink-driving.

"My heart tells me quite clearly that I cannot stay," Bishop Margot Kaessmann was quoted as saying.

Arrested in Hanover at the weekend, she was charged with passing a red light while three times over the legal limit.

The 51-year-old became Germany's youngest bishop in 1999. She was appointed last year to lead the 25 million-strong Lutheran Church.

THE TELEGRAPH: The female head of Germany's Protestant church has been accused of driving her £80,000 official limousine while three times over the drink-drive limit.

Police pulled over Bishop Margot Kaessmann, 51, at the wheel of her powerful VW Phaeton car after she ran a red light in Hanover.

A positive breath test resulted in her being driven to a police station where she gave a blood sample, the results of which were released yesterday morning by the public prosecutor's office in the city.

She had a blood-alcohol reading of 1.54 mg – over three times the legal limit. An automatic fine and loss of licence will follow. It remains unclear if the incident will cost her job as head of the nation's Protestant faith. >>> Allan Hall in Berlin | Tuesday, February 23, 2010

TIMESONLINE: The Vatican has described the Protestant and Orthodox faiths as “not proper Churches” in a document issued with the full authority of the Pope.

Anglican leaders reacted with dismay, accusing the Roman Catholic Church of paradoxical behaviour. They said that the new 16-page document outling the “defects” of non-Catholic churches constituted a major obstacle to ecumenism.

The document said that the Orthodox church suffered from a “wound” because it did not recognise the primacy of the Pope. The wound was “still more profound” in Protestant denominations, it added.

It was “difficult to see how the title of ‘Church’ could possibly be attributed to them”, said the statement from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
