“Utter Disaster for All Involved”: Is Trump’s War on Iran Repeating Bush’s “Forever War” in Iraq?

Mar 4, 2026 | The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran is now in its fifth day. Following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Israel has made it clear that it intends to target any official successors. Observers also warn that Israel could soon deploy its "Dahiya doctrine," a military strategy it first developed in Lebanon that involves carpet-bombing densely populated residential areas. Despite U.S. hopes for a short engagement, however, Iran appears to be settling in for a "war of attrition" against "the biggest military superpower in world history, and the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East," says scholar Narges Bajoghli. "This could turn into a regional war of a scale that will make the past 25 years of forever wars in the Middle East seem like a walk in the park."

Trump’s Gaza Ceasefire Plan, the Beautiful Lie of Peace & Ugly Reality of Occupation: Marwan Bishara

Sep 30, 2025 | Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, argued that Trump’s Gaza peace plan is simply a continuation of decades of failed, US-backed deals that always favour Israel at the expense of Palestinians.

He said Hamas has been cornered since 2024, with the war on Gaza waged in genocidal terms, now rebranded as diplomacy.

Bishara described Netanyahu as a “pathological liar” and a political survivor who, like his predecessors, manipulates agreements to Israel’s advantage.

He stressed the need for historical context, recalling how past peace processes only entrenched occupation, settlement expansion, and Palestinian marginalisation.

Bishara warned that while Gaza might get a temporary respite, nothing fundamental will change because Israel can always rely on unconditional US support.

He concluded that despite appearances of change, the cycle of occupation, settlement, and violence will persist, leaving Palestinians trapped in the same struggle.

Analysis: Trump's Middle East Plan: The Farce, the Fraud and the Fury

The Trump administration has finally lifted the curtains on the final act of its Middle East diplomacy by revealing the long-awaited, ahem, "peace plan" in a surrealistic White House celebration. I will admit from the outset that I cannot write about it with a straight face, considering the absurdity of the last three years of Trump policies towards Israel and Palestine. To call it a "peace plan" is to do injustice to the infamous "peace process" and its many failed "peace plans". It is so much worse, that a better term for it would be an "assault on peace". Everything about the plan is farcical. Al Jazeera's senior political analyst Marwan Bishara discusses the outcome of the deal.

Analysis: Trump's Jerusalem Move a 'Declaration of War on Palestinian Rights'

President Donald Trump has announced that the US formally recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will begin the process of moving its embassy to the city, breaking with decades of US policy. The president said he ordered the state department to develop a plan to relocate the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Al Jazeera's Marwan Bishara explains why his statement is a "declaration of war against Palestinian rights".
