Le Français Louis Arnaud, détenu en Iran depuis septembre 2022, a été condamné à cinq années de prison « après plusieurs audiences dans un tribunal sans la présence de ses avocats », a déclaré mercredi 8 novembre sa mère, Sylvie Arnaud.

« Cette condamnation, que rien ne permet d’étayer, et l’absence de tout accès à un avocat, est inacceptable », a réagi la porte-parole du ministère français des affaires étrangères, Anne-Claire Legendre, lors d’un point presse du ministère. Mme Legendre a appelé à « sa libération immédiate, ainsi qu’à celle de la totalité des Français arbitrairement détenus en Iran ».

La France insoumise ne participera pas à la marche contre l’antisémitisme en raison de la présence de l’extrême droite

LE MONDE : La présence du Rassemblement national et de Reconquête ! est également jugée « illégitime » par le Parti socialiste (PS), qui a toutefois appelé à prendre part à cette marche, tandis que le Parti communiste envisage de défiler à un autre endroit.

La France insoumise (LFI) et ses députés « ne participeront pas » à la marche contre l’antisémitisme prévue dimanche à l’appel des présidents de l’Assemblée nationale et du Sénat, a fait savoir le parti, mercredi 8 novembre, en dénonçant la présence annoncée du Rassemblement national (RN).
LFI confirme ainsi une absence annoncée dès mardi soir par son leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, qui avait rejeté sur X (anciennement Twitter) ce « rendez-vous » des « amis du soutien inconditionnel au massacre » commis selon lui par l’armée israélienne dans la bande de Gaza.

Storm Domingos to Slam Western Europe on the Heels of Deadly Ciarán

THE WASHINGTON POST: The powerful storm is expected to hit western France and northern Spain hardest just days after Ciarán blasted the region

Storm Ciarán proved to be the worst since 1987 for parts of western Europe, with its 120 mph gusts, tennis ball-sized hail, towering waves and heavy rains. The storm killed at least 12 people, according to the Associated Press, and caused widespread damage, knocking out power to 1.2 million residents in France and disrupting hundreds of flights.

Now, a new storm — named Domingos by Spain’s meteorological agency — is on the way, and could exacerbate ongoing efforts to clean up from its predecessor.

The worst of Domingos is expected to hit northern Spain and western France along the Bay of Biscay, where gusts in excess of 60 mph are possible in addition to heavy rain.

In 2024, the freedom of women to have an abortion will be irreversible."

France Opens Investigation into ‘Despicable’ Antisemitic Graffiti in Paris

French prosecutors have opened several investigations into the painting of dozens of Stars of David on buildings around Paris and its suburbs that have been widely seen as antisemitic and threatening to Jews, amid the war between Israel and Hamas.

The French prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, condemned “the despicable acts”, saying they would not go unpunished.

New stars were painted on the facades of several buildings in a southern areas of Paris this week. Many appeared to have been spraypainted using stencils. Similar tags appeared over the weekend in suburbs of the city, including Vanves, Fontenay-aux-Roses and Aubervilliers.

Emmanuel Macron has promised to enshrine a woman’s right to an abortion in the French constitution by next year, after restrictions in other countries propelled France on a path towards unconditionally guaranteeing abortion rights.

The French president said on Sunday that his government would submit a draft text to France’s highest administrative court over the coming week, with the aim of making abortion rights constitutional by the end of the year.

Teacher Killed in Arras School Attack in Northern France

A teacher has been killed and two other people critically injured in a stabbing at a school in Arras, northern France.

Europe 1 reported that the suspected attacker, who has been arrested, was on a watchlist of people known to be a security risk in connection to radical Islamism. Local media reported that he was a former pupil at Gambetta college. A police source told Agence France-Presse he was from Russia’s mainly Muslim southern Caucasus region of Chechnya.

France’s anti-terrorism prosecution office said it would start an investigation, as President Emmanuel Macron headed to the scene.

The attack happened at about 11am. BFM reported that the person killed was a French literature teacher. The prosecutors are investigating transactions involving Arnault, whose ownership of the luxury goods group LVMH has made him the world’s second richest person after Elon Musk, and Nikolai Sarkisov, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office. The military junta which seized power in Niger in July welcomed the move.

The decision by Paris follows months of animosity and protests against the French presence in its former colony, with regular demonstrations in the capital Niamey.
