Warsi: Britons More Worldly Than Americans

Baroness Warsi, Minister for Faith
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: America is not as “sophisticated” as Britain in understanding international relations, Baroness Warsi says

America is not as “sophisticated” as Britain in understanding international relations, Baroness Warsi said today.

The minister for faith, on a visit to America, also said the conservative Fox News channel needed training on “religious literacy”.

The blunt remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington DC caused a flutter on social media networks after being picked up by the liberal Huffington Post website.

“I think Britain is quite uniquely sophisticated in its understanding of the world in a way the US is not,” she said.

“That comes from much of our own history and much of our connection.” » | Peter Foster, in Washington | Friday, November 15, 2013

British Woman Faces Jail for 'Sex in Backseat of Dubai Taxi' after All-day Drinking Binge

MAIL ONLINE: A British businesswoman faces up to three years in jail for allegedly having sex in a taxi in Dubai while she was drunk.

Rebecca Blake, 29, and Conor McRedmond were arrested after an all-day drinking binge.

They were held for five days and accused of having sex outside marriage and being drunk in a public place – both criminal offences in the strict Islamic state.

Miss Blake, a recruitment consultant, met Irishman Mr McRedmond at The Irish Village, a hotel bar where patrons pay £10 a head for an all-you-can-drink brunch event. After drinking for 12 hours, the pair hailed a cab towards Dubai Marina.

Minutes later they were spotted in a passionate embrace by the driver in his rear view mirror, according to police reports.

Incensed by their behaviour, the driver stopped and complained to police in a patrol car parked nearby. When he returned with an officer, they saw Miss Blake having sex on the back seat of the cab with Mr McRedmond, it is alleged.

A source said: ‘They were completely drunk, started kissing and then got carried away. That’s when they started having sex.

‘When the police officer went over, he found the woman was completely naked and they were having sex on the back seat.’ Read on and comment » | Arthur Martin | Wednesday, May 16, 2012

British Are a Bunch of Thick People Ruled by a Mafia

MAIL ONLINE: The British people and David Cameron have been labelled ‘thick’ by a senior member of Iran’s government.

In a blistering diatribe against Britain, Mohammad-Reza Rahimi said: ‘They have plundered the world in the last 500 years and the young lad in charge now is even more stupid than his predecessor. It’s as if God has made this nation servants of America and Zionists.’

Iran’s First Vice President added: ‘England has nothing. Its inhabitants are not human, its officials are not responsible, and it doesn’t even have any natural resources. (They are) a bunch of thick people ruled by a mafia.’ British are bunch of thick people ruled by a mafia, says Iran's vice president... and sparks row with our ambassador >>> Mail Foreign Service | Thursday, August 12, 2010

Britons Sentenced to a Month in Prison for Kissing* in Dubai Restaurant

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Two Britons have been sentenced to a month's imprisonment for indecency after a local woman took objection to them kissing in a restaurant.

Ayman Najafi, 24, a marketing consultant who lives in Dubai, and Charlotte Adams, 25, an estate agent from North London, were said to have been touching each other and kissing passionately as they dined with friends in a beachfront restaurant.

They were arrested and sentenced to a month in prison after which they were told they would be deported.

But the pair told a hearing at the Dubai Appeal Court yesterday that they were the victims of a "huge misunderstanding" and had simply exchanged a friendly greeting.

"We kissed each other on the cheek as a greeting, nothing more,” Mr Najafi told Judge Aysar Fouad. Miss Adams pointed at her cheek to show where contact had taken place.

The two are not the first Britons to fall foul of the strict laws in the conservative Muslim state. Last year Michelle Palmer, 36, and Vince Acors, 34, were sentenced to three months imprisonment for having sex on a beach.

The latest incident took place when Miss Adams and Mr Najafi met along with four other friends for dinner at Bob's Easy Diner on the beachfront at the Jumeirah Beach Residence complex on November 27.

The police were called at around 2am by an Emirati woman sitting at a nearby table with her children and claimed her daughter had been upset by the display of affection. >>> Richard Spencer in Dubai, and Aislinn Laing | Sunday, March 14, 2010

*There was a time when a British government would have sent out the warships to put this upstart Emirate, Dubai, in its place. These days we just suck up, and say: ‘Yes Sir, No Sir, three bags full, Sir!’ It’s pathetic! When will this damn government grow a backbone? If Brown had anything in him, he’d get on that telephone and tell the leader of Dubai that these innocent people should be released forthwith, or else. But that won’t happen because all our politicians understand these days is arsehole-scraping. How ashamed one has to be to be British nowadays! – © Mark

Britons Are Suspicious Towards Muslims, Study Finds

THE TELEGRAPH: The British public are concerned at the rise of Islam in the UK and fear that the country is deeply divided along religious lines, according to a major survey.

Is there any wonder? Who the hell wanted religious diversity anyway? Whoever thought up the idea must have been a naïve idiot! Muslims certainly don’t want diversity. In their eyes, everyone must submit to Allah, and call Muhammad the seal of prophets. What fools we have been to swallow this BS! There is but one possible result of this experiment: Bloodshed on the streets of the United Kingdom! – © Mark

More than half the population would be strongly opposed to a mosque being built in their neighbourhood, the study found.

A large proportion of the country believes that the multicultural experiment has failed, with 52 per cent considering that Britain is deeply divided along religious lines and 45 per cent saying that religious diversity has had a negative impact.

Only a quarter of Britons feel positive towards Muslims, while more than a third report feeling “cool” towards them.

The findings, to be published later this month in the respected British Social Attitudes Survey, show that far greater opposition to Islam than to any other faith and reveal that most people are willing to limit freedom of speech in an attempt to silence religious extremists.

David Voas, professor of population studies at Manchester University, who analysed the data, said that people were becoming intolerant towards all religions because of “the degree to which Islam is perceived as a threat to social cohesion”.

He said: “Muslims deserve to be the focus of policy on social cohesion, because no other group elicits so much disquiet.”

The “size and visibility” of Islamic communities has led to serious concerns about their impact on British society, Prof Voas concludes.

“This apparent threat to national identity (or even, some fear, to security) reduces the willingness to accommodate free expression.

“Opinion is divided, and many people remain tolerant of unpopular speech as well as distinctive dress and religious behaviour, but a large segment of the British population is unhappy about these subcultures.” >>> Jonathan Wynne-Jones, Religious Affairs Correspondent | Saturday, January 09, 2010

MAIL Online: TV presenter Jeremy Paxman says Britons are a 'bunch of barbarians' - for watching so much television.

The Newsnight and University Challenge star made the astonishing attack last night on the very people whose viewing habits provide him with his living.

Appearing at the Hay on Wye Festival, Paxman could not hide his contempt for the British love of TV viewing.

He was at the festival to speak about his passion for Victorian art and it was the final question he received from the audience that sparked off his vitriolic rant.

A woman questioned him about why so few people visit art galleries in Britain these days and asked if he thought fuller explanations of paintings on the walls alongside them would bring in more visitors.

Paxman, who had been telling the audience how hugely popular paintings and art galleries were in Victorian times, replied: 'I think the basic problem is that we are a bunch of Barbarians, really.

'It is immensely depressing. Watching TV is the most popular leisure activity in this country now. I find this very depressing. Very depressing indeed. TV Presenter Jeremy Paxman Brands Britons 'Barbarians' for Watching Too Much Television>>> | Sunday, Mail 31, 2009

More Than Three-quarters of Britons Want to See Jobless Immigrants Forced to Leave UK

MAIL Online: More than three-quarters of Britons believe jobless immigrants should be asked to leave the UK, according to a new poll.

The finding will raise fears that the far-Right BNP could prosper in the recession as unemployment rises.

In addition, more than half of the adults in Britain who took part in the FT/Harris survey opposed the right for citizens from other European Union countries to work here.

Outspoken immigration minister Phil Woolas admitted that the Government, despite years of tough talking on immigration, had yet to convince many voters that it had properly tightened Britain's borders. >>> Daily Mail Reporter | Monday, March 16, 2009

Westerners Warned over Travel to Indonesia ahead of Bali Executions

THE TELEGRAPH: British, Australian and US citizens have been warned about travelling to Indonesia as the country prepares to execute three men responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings.

Amid fears of revenge attacks, Australia has advised its citizens against all travel to the south-east Asian country.

In London, the Foreign Office said that British citizens should exercise caution and be villigent for political protests or any sign of violence.

The United States warned its citizens to "maintain a low profile".

The three men, Imam Samudra, 38, Mukhlas, 48, and Amrozi, 46, are to be executed by firing squad imminently. They were convicted and sentenced in 2003 for their role in planning the co-ordinated suicide car bombings which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and 28 British holidaymakers.

The three men were members of a regional Islamist terror group loosely allied to al-Qaeda. They have shown no remorse for their crime and regard themselves as martyrs.

They have exhausted all their appeals and all the signs are that the executions are imminent after the execution order was brought forward. >>> By Thomas Bell, South East Asia Correspondent | November 3, 2008
