Democracy, Freedom, and Islam
Islam supercedes nationality," says media mogul Rupert Murdoch. "You have to be careful about Muslims who have a very strong, in many ways a fine but very strong religion, which supercedes any sense of nationalism wherever they go," he told Channel Nine. Mr Murdoch was present at a function in Sydney that described him as the most influential Australian of all times.

It was indeed a bold remark from the media baron, considering the fact that mainstream media is sickeningly "secular". Is this an indicator of things to come? The Western media showed guts, even if misplaced, by republishing the cartoons of Prophet Mohammed in various newspapers across Europe, Israel, Australia and New Zealand. According to confidential sources, Prophet Mohammed's cartoons were republished across newspapers to preempt a reaction from the Islamic world.

The Western intelligentsia is increasingly becoming aware of the danger that West (along with rest of the world) faces from Islam. Niall Fergusson and Mark Steyn anticipate civil war (like French riots last October) taking place in European cities as Muslim demography burgeons and European population senesces. European demography will be ill-prepared to meet an Islamic challenge in, say, 2020. Can Islam be democratic? By Balbir K Punj

Then there's my own essay which first appeared on Saturday, November 12, 2006, on this very topic:

"Until 9/11, the western world was largely ignorant of the religion of Islam, of its goals, of its aspirations. Indeed, even since 9/11, most people, and that includes our politicians, would not score very highly in a test of their knowledge on the subject. It should be obvious to all thinking people that our politicians are actually unaware, dare I say blind, to the dangers that Islam will increasingly cause us. It is truly a case of the blind leading the blind! That means to say, uninformed and unthinking politicians leading an ill-informed electorate. But folks, this is what we have right now. The same can hardly be said of Muslims in the Islamic world, though; for their knowledge of Christianity far surpasses - even though much of their knowledge is quite distorted - any knowledge of Islam by the man in the street in the West." - ©Mark Alexander Islam: The Enemy of Democracy and Freedom

Our leaders are still slow to learn. I don’t get it. When I have a problem to solve in my profession, I hit the books, call the experts, and reason it out. I’ve never seen such willful ignorance as our political and intellectual leaders. I hear nothing but platitudes. When did people become so dumb and intellectually lazy?

Hello Jason!

Slow to learn? You can say that again!

Yes, most people try and learn all about what is causing the problems they have in their professions. But we have a BIG problem here, I think. The first thing to note is that everyone's afraid, intimidated, by Islam. The second thing is that there are too many people at the top making a fat living from the oil-rich Saudis and other Middle Easterners. Therefore, I think the will to do anything about this problem simply isn't there.

Moreover, many a leader lives in hope of getting their stipends on the boards of oil companies once they lose/leave office. A good example of this is our ex-leader, John Major. He has made a killing since leaving office. Indeed, he has become an extremely rich man. In short, they don't want to upset the apple cart, so to speak.

Money, Jason, trumps principles each and every time, I am sorry to say.

I have just been challenged for calling our "leaders" bloody wankers. I apologize as this is the most complimentary label I could come up with. It would be unseemly for me to call these wretches what they REALLY are because I am not given to using such foul and profane language before well-educated and cultured persons.

While the causes of the West's dimwittedness about Islam, I place much of the blame upon the schools (all levels, but particularly the universities) and the churches. Tie those two influences on most of the Western population with the governing bodies' ties to the oil bucks, and we have a recipe for disaster as far as Western civilization.

We live in a time of sound bites and instant gratification. Way too many people just will not dig in and do the research. Research about Islam eliminates the obfuscation on the past of the media. The information about the truth regarding Islam is out there, but people just don't want to be bothered.

A little quotation from The Truth Project, an information site:

At some point our collective heads will come up out of the sand, probably by the force of an explosion; and we'll stand, mouths agape like so many fish out of water, trying to comprehend a situation we've done our best to ignore.

It has been said that the skills necessary to get elected to the U.S. Congress are not the ones needed to then be an effective legislator. In the House, which has a two year election cycle, you have to be looking for money to bankroll your next election on the first day of your two year term. The Senate's 6 year election cycle makes this need not quite so urgent but, it's still there. People with big egos, thick skins and a desire for power make it, intellectuals, those with strict morals or who don't relish making all sorts of deals with all sorts of people are not likely to get elected. High livel nominees for positions requiring the advice and consent of the Senate have to disclose their entire life history, all their associations and reveal their entire financial situation in the required paperwork; plenty of information for anyone in the Senate to dig around and find some way to shoot down someone they don't want for whatever reason.

Is it any wonder we get the clowns, climbers, dimwits and egomaniacs that we do

The civilized world is under threat from 6th century darkness.

Yes, and the darkness will fall over the world as sure as night follows day unless the free and enlightened world is going to be prepared to do something about it!

Yes, because they are too busy making money and enjoying themselves to care about these matters. But they will care when they start losing their freedoms!

Well said! What you say is true.

By the way, welcome to this website!

I also think our fellow conservative journalists have let us down (most of us here are in the conservative side of the spectrum I believe.) They used to be a vocal opposition but now that they have had a taste of power, they're more worried about losing it than remember why they wanted it in the first place (as many of the above comments note.) But the journalists should be on their backs for falling short of the hope we once had. Appeasement and nations-building wasn’t what we signed up for. The spirit that once fought communism and got heat from the leftist universities needs to be revived and retooled for the current threat to civilization.

Many might not remember that Bush ran as a moderate in 2000. He even tried to keep the Democrats on board in the WOT by adopting their idealism by adding a humanitarian dimension to a war with a brutal enemy. But appeasing the left worked as about as well as appeasing the Islamic enemy. The left hates Bush. I used to say that Bush shouldn’t pull his punches because they are going to hate him anyway. Thus, an appeasing compromise is as impractical as it is immoral.

As much as we remember the name Neville Chamberlain, let’s remember that he reversed his position and gave Churchill his full support. Today, we don’t even have the stature of a Chamberlain. Our politicians deserve far more contempt.
