Violence Across Pakistan in Wake of Bhutto’s Assassination

THE TELEGRAPH: Pakistani security forces were given orders to shoot on sight today to curb unrest as millions across the country mourned Benazir Bhutto.

The former prime minister and leading opposition figure was laid to rest in her family's mausoleum a day after her assassination by Islamic extremists.

Her simple coffin, draped in the red, green and black flag of her Pakistan People's Party, was greeted by huge crowds at her ancestral grave in the village of Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in the southern province of Sind.

Accompanied by her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, and three children, her body was carried in a white ambulance as it made its way towards the white Mogulesque mausoleum surrounded by hundreds of thousands of mourners. Italy Gets Tough with Hitherto Uncontolled Romanian Migrants Because of Violence
THE GUARDIAN: Three Romanians were in hospitals in Rome yesterday - one of them seriously injured - after being attacked by a masked, club-wielding gang on Friday night in the latest escalation of racial tension in Italy following the beating to death of a naval captain's wife.

The violence, condemned by local politicians, came as authorities in Milan carried out the first expulsions of Romanians under new legislation that came into effect on Friday allowing for the removal of EU citizens judged to be a threat to public security. Italian television showed four men being hustled aboard an airliner by police after nightfall.

Emotions were again running high yesterday at a funeral service in Rome for Giovanna Reggiani, the 47-year-old woman who was discovered fatally injured in a ditch on Tuesday after being savagely attacked. A young Romanian has been arrested and jailed. He has admitted snatching her bag, but denies beating and sexually assaulting her.

A thousand people packed into the church, in a well-heeled district of the capital, for an ecumenical service conducted by a Protestant pastor and the Italian navy's Roman Catholic chaplain. Large numbers gathered outside, many of them tearful, middle-aged women.

Ms Reggiani, though married to a Catholic, was a member of Italy's tiny Protestant community, the Waldensians. Her husband, the commander of the navy's minesweeping squadron, arrived at the church holding a single red rose. ”Le Pakistan est plongé dans une crise”
LE MONDE - OPINION: Le Pakistan est plongé dans une crise d'une gravité dont il est nécessaire de prendre toute la mesure. Car on aurait bien tort de réduire les scènes d'affrontements sanglants (41 morts) dont la capitale économique du pays, Karachi, a été le théâtre ce week-end à un simple "folklore" politique d'une région rituellement secouée de troubles ethniques ou religieux.

Ces violences marquent un tournant inquiétant. Elles signent la fin d'une époque, celle où le général Musharraf, arrivé au pouvoir en 1999 par un putsch, avait pu diriger le Pakistan sans trop de heurts. Le chef de l'Etat doit désormais faire face à un mouvement de contestation d'une ampleur sans précédent. Ce défi est lourd de périls pour la cohésion du pays autant que pour la stabilité régionale. TROIS jours après l'élection de Nicolas Sarkozy, les forces de l'ordre demeurent sur les dents. L'embrasement tant redouté des banlieues n'a certes pas eu lieu. Pourtant, depuis dimanche soir, les incidents sporadiques se sont multipliés à Paris et dans plusieurs villes de province. Selon des analystes de la place Beauvau, ces bouffées de violence semblent reposer sur deux ressorts : la colère de jeunes exclus dans les cités sensibles et, dans une plus large mesure, l'activisme de l'extrême-gauche au coeur des grandes agglomérations. Comme au soir du second tour, l'est de Paris a été le berceau, dans la nuit de lundi à hier, d'une manifestation hostile orchestrée par 250 jeunes sympathisants socialistes ainsi qu'un « noyau dur » d'une cinquantaine de militants de l'ultra-gauche (lire ci-dessous). Vers 20 heures, le cortège, scandant « Sarko, facho ! Le peuple aura ta peau ! » ou « Sarko, racaille, il faut que tu t'en ailles ! », a bloqué la place de la Bastille avant de fondre sur la rue de la Roquette. « Les plus virulents, armés de marteaux, étaient venus dans le seul but de casser », déplore un commissaire parisien.
