Watching assorted cardinals and bishops attempt to dodge blame for the church's horrific record of child abuse is akin to watching fish flap about in the bottom of a boat. The more the prelates wriggle, the more deeply the hooks sink.

The Vatican has blamed the media and the permissive values of the 60s and 70s, it has compared offending rates within the church with rates in other institutions, it has preached the virtues of forgiveness and, just to demonstrate how completely it has lost touch with notions of right and wrong, it has attempted to draw distinctions between paedophilia (sexual relations with children) and ephebophilia (relations with mid-to-late adolescents).

Instead of recognising that it is getting deeper and deeper into a hole, it keeps digging. While the Pope apologises and urges Christians to repent for sins, senior church figures keep looking for scapegoats. >>> | Saturday, April 17, 2010

TIMES ONLINE: The Vatican moved to distance itself today from comments made by the Pope’s top aide linking paedophilia to homosexuality, as the Foreign Office dismissed suggestions that the pontiff could be arrested when he visits Britain in September.

Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, said that the remarks by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State, went outside the remit of Church authorities, adding that the comments had been misunderstood.

“General assertions of a specifically psychological or medical nature” were the responsibility of specialists and not Church officials, he said in a statement.

Father Lombardi said that Cardinal Bertone had been referring only to cases of paedophilia in the clergy and not to “the world population”.

He said that recent “statistical data” on the abuse of minors by priests showed that 10 per cent of the cases concerned paedophilia “in the strict sense”, while the other 90 per cent concerned sex between priests and adolescents.

Catholic bishops of England and Wales also distanced themselves from the comments.

Father Marcus Stock, general secretary of the Bishops’ Conference, said in a statement: “To the best of my knowledge there is no empirical data which concludes that sexual orientation is connected to child sexual abuse.

“The consensus among researchers is that the sexual abuse of children is not a question of sexual orientation, whether heterosexual or homosexual, but of a disordered attraction or fixation.”

He added: “Many abusers of children have never developed the capacity for mature adult relationships. Instead, their sexual attractions focus on children — boys, girls, or both. In the sexual abuse of children the issue is the sexual fixation of the abusers and not their sexual orientation.”

France added its voice to the chorus of condemnation, saying that it was “unacceptable” to lump paedophilia with homosexuality. LE FIGARO: Le cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, bras-droit du pape Benoît XVI, réfute en revanche tout lien entre le célibat de prêtres et la pédophilie.

Après la cascade de révélations de scandales pédophiles dans l'Eglise catholique, le Vatican ravive la polémique. C'est sur une radio chilienne que le cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, bras-droit du pape Benoît XVI, a lancé lundi soir : «De nombreux psychiatres et psychologues ont démontré qu'il n'existe pas de relation entre le célibat et la pédophilie, mais beaucoup d'autres - et on me l'a dit récemment - ont démontré qu'il existait un lien entre l'homosexualité et la pédophilie. La vérité est celle-ci et le problème, c'est cela». Le responsable religieux répondait à une question qui lui suggérait que la fin du célibat des prêtres pourrait résoudre les problèmes de pédophilie au sein de l'Eglise catholique. Officiellement, l'Eglise considère l'homosexualité comme «un dérèglement», qu'elle «ne condamne pas absolument» mais «n'approuve en aucun cas».

Le rapprochement que Tarcisio Bertone établit entre pédophiles et homosexuels n'a pas manqué de susciter la réaction indignée d'associations de défense des droits des homosexuels au Chili : «Ni Bertone, ni le Vatican, n'ont l'autorité morale» pour offrir des leçons de sexualité, a ainsi estimé Rolando Jimenez, président du mouvement pour l'intégration et la libération homosexuelle au Chili. TIMES ONLINE: The Holy See’s second-highest prelate after the Pope has blamed homosexuals for the paedophile crisis.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, said that the child rape scandal that is threatening the moral authority of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide is linked to homosexuality and not celibacy among priests.

Other Vatican clerics have sought to deflect criticism from the Catholic hierarchy by blaming the media, and one retired bishop was even reported earlier this week to have blamed the Jews.

Cardinal Bertone made the comments during a news conference on Monday in Chile, where one of the church’s highest-profile paedophile cases involves a priest having sex with young girls.

Cardinal Bertone said: “Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and paedophilia. But many others have demonstrated, I have been told recently, that there is a relation between homosexuality and paedophilia. That is true. That is the problem.”

Cardinal Bertone also said that the church had never impeded investigations of paedophilia by priests.

Chile’s gay rights advocates reacted with anger. “Neither Bertone nor the Vatican has the moral authority to give lessons on sexuality,” said Rolando Jiménez, president of the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation in Chile.

Mr Jimenez also said that no reputable study existed to support the cardinal’s claims. “This is a perverse strategy by the Vatican to shirk its own ethical and legal responsibility by making a spurious and disgusting connection,” he said.

Nouveau scandale de prêtre pédophile en Norvège
TRIBUNE DE GENÈVE: OSLO | Après plusieurs pays ces derniers mois, la Norvège a été à son tour frappée mercredi par un scandale de prêtre catholique pédophile, une affaire qui remonte à près de 20 ans et dont le Vatican avait eu connaissance dès le début de l'année dernière.

Georg Müller, un évêque d'origine allemande de 58 ans, a reconnu sous la pression de ses supérieurs avoir abusé sexuellement d'un enfant de choeur lorsqu'il était simple prêtre à Trondheim, dans le centre de la Norvège, a annoncé l'Eglise catholique du pays scandinave.

Evêque de la troisième ville de Norvège pendant douze ans, il avait subitement quitté ses fonctions en juin dernier, officiellement en raison d'"incompatibilités de travail" avec d'autres religieux.

"Georg Müller a admis être coupable d'abus sexuels sur un mineur et que c'est la raison de son départ de ses fonctions l'an dernier", a déclaré l'actuel évêque de Trondheim et d'Oslo, Bernt Eidsvig, confirmant des informations du quotidien Adresseavisen.

"C'est une affaire très triste, mais je prie pour toutes les personnes impliquées et pour que l'Eglise sorte de tout ceci", a-t-il dit au journal local.

Depuis fin 2009, l'Eglise catholique est secouée par des révélations en série d'abus pédophiles commis par des religieux, souvent couverts par leur hiérarchie, en Europe, notamment en Irlande et Allemagne, et aux Etats-Unis.

Ces dernières semaines, le pape Benoît XVI a lui-même été mis en cause par des médias allemands et américains pour avoir, selon eux, gardé le silence sur des abus quand il était archevêque à Munich puis chef de la Congrégation pour la Doctrine de la foi au Vatican.

On est loin de "la joie triomphante et la résurrection" en ce dimanche pascal. Après les scandales de pédophilie, l’Eglise catholique se retrouve au coeur d’une nouvelle polémique: le prédicateur du Vatican a risqué un parallèle douteux entre les critiques à l’encontre du pape et les persécutions dont le peuple juif a été victime, vendredi soir, en présence de Benoît XVI, suscitant un véritable tollé.

Marvin Hier, rabbin et fondateur du Centre Simon Wiesenthal a exigé les "excuses" du pape pour ces "remarques blessantes", "honteuses, hors de propos" et cette "déformation totale de l’Histoire", s’indignant de la comparaison entre des siècles d’antisémitisme qui ont mené à "la mort des dizaines de millions de personnes innocentes avec des criminels qui renient leur foi et leur vocation en agressant sexuellement des enfants". "Cela fait mal au coeur de voir un responsable de haut rang du Vatican faire des remarques aussi dures, qui sont une insulte aussi bien pour les victimes d’agressions sexuelles que pour les juifs", a renchéri David Clohessy, qui dirige SNAP, groupe de défense des victimes de prêtres pédophiles.

Vendredi soir, pendant la liturgie de la passion du Christ, le père Raniero Cantalamessa, prédicateur de la maison pontificale, a lu une lettre de "solidarité" que lui aurait adressée un "ami juif": "Je suis avec dégoût l’attaque violente et concentrique contre l’Eglise et le pape. L’utilisation du stéréotype, le passage de la responsabilité et de la faute personnelle à la faute collective me rappellent les aspects les plus honteux de l’antisémitisme." Pour le rabbin Gary Greenebaum, chargé des relations interreligieuses au sein de l’American Jewish Comittee, s’il est "compréhensible que l’Eglise se sente sous pression", les responsables catholiques "doivent veiller à ne pas pratiquer l’hyperbole". La présidente du Conseil central des juifs d’Allemagne, Charlotte Knobloch, s’était déjà insurgée contre un sermon de l’évêque de Ratisbonne, Gerhard Ludwig Müller, qui avait comparé les critiques de la presse à des méthodes nazies. THE SUNDAY TIMES: When John Paul II died five years ago the crowd that packed St Peter’s Square for his funeral clamoured “Santo subito (Saint now)!” in a spontaneous tribute to the charisma of the Polish pontiff.

As the faithful marked the anniversary of John Paul’s death on Good Friday, however, he was being drawn into the scandal over child abuse in the Catholic church that has confronted his successor, Benedict XVI, with the worst crisis of his reign.

Allegations that the late pontiff blocked an inquiry into a paedophile cardinal, promoted senior church figures despite accusations that they had molested boys and covered up innumerable cases of abuse during his 26-year papacy have cast a cloud over his path to sainthood.

The most serious claims related to Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer, an Austrian friend of John Paul’s who abused an estimated 2,000 boys over decades but never faced any sanction from Rome.

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Groer’s successor, criticised the handling of that scandal and other abuse cases last week after holding a special service in St Stephen’s cathedral, Vienna, entitled “Admitting our guilt”.

Schönborn condemned the “sinful structures” within the church and the patterns of “silencing” victims and “looking away”.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger — who became Pope Benedict — had tried to investigate the abuses as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, according to Schönborn. Rowan Williams Apologises for Claiming Catholic Church Has Lost 'All Credibility'
THE TELEGRAPH: The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams has been forced into a humiliating apology after claiming the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland had lost all credibility over the child abuse scandal.

Following a torrent of criticism, Dr Williams admitted his "deep sorrow and regret" over his earlier comments in a telephone conversation with the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin.

A statement issued last night by the Dublin Archdioces said: "The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, this afternoon telephoned Archbishop Diarmuid Martin to express his deep sorrow and regret for difficulties which may have been created by remarks in a BBC interview concerning the credibility of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

The archbishop of Canterbury has said the Catholic church in Ireland has lost "all credibility" because of its poor handling of the scandal of paedophile priests.

Dr Rowan Williams said the scandal had been a "colossal trauma" for Ireland in particular.

In an interview to be broadcast on Monday, he said: "I was speaking to an Irish friend recently who was saying that it's quite difficult in some parts of Ireland to go down the street wearing a clerical collar now.

"And an institution so deeply bound into the life of a society suddenly becoming, suddenly losing all credibility – that's not just a problem for the church, it is a problem for everybody in Ireland."

The archbishop's remarks are likely to fuel the controversy surrounding the pope's visit to Britain in September, when he is expected to talk about moral standards and renew his attack on Britain's equality laws.

A Protest the Pope petition on the Downing Street website against the £15m cost of the visit, which will be shared by the government and the Catholic church, has already attracted more than 10,000 signatories.

In his interview for BBC Radio 4's Start the Week, to be broadcast on Monday, Williams sounded less than enthused about the pope's visit.

"The pope will be coming here to Lambeth Palace. We'll have the bishops together to meet him. I'm concerned that he has the chance to say what he wants to say in and to British society, that we welcome him as a valued partner and, you know, that's ... that's about it."

He also predicted that few Anglicans would take up the pope's offer of conversion to Catholicism.

The reputation of the Catholic church in Ireland has been severley damaged by revelations that its leaders covered up widespread child sexual abuse by dozens of paedophile priests.

Its leader, the primate of All-Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, came under pressure to stand down after he admitted being at a meeting where children abused by the convicted paedophile Father Brendan Smyth were forced to take a vow of silence.

The scandal has also damaged the pope, who has faced accusations that he failed to properly investigate a serial abuser in a children's home for the deaf in Wisconsin, US, in the late 1990s.

THE TELEGRAPH: Child abuse committed by priests has led to “a great public humiliation” of the church, according to the most senior Roman Catholic in Britain.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, will also tell worshippers on Easter Sunday that the cover-up of “evil” paedophilia by senior clergy “brings shame on us all”.

However he insisted that the faithful must not turn away from the church, just as voters disillusioned by the state of politics should still cast their ballots.

LE TEMPS: Benoît XVI n’a fait aucune mention en lançant les célébrations pascales ce matin des affaires d’abus sexuels qui ébranlent le monde catholique. Un avocat américain vient de déposer une requête pour obtenir que le pape témoigne sous serment dans le cadre de plusieurs dossiers de prêtres accusés de pédophilie aux Etats-Unis

L’avocat William McMurry estime que le Vatican était au courant depuis longtemps du scandale des enfants violés par des prêtres. Selon sa requête, dont l’AFP s’est procuré copie, Benoît XVI était au courant de ce qu’il se passait aux Etats-Unis alors qu’il était encore cardinal et qu’il présidait la Congrégation de la doctrine de la foi - pendant les 24 ans qui ont précédé son accession à la papauté.

The paedophile abuse cases have become a big crisis for the Roman Catholic Church. A crisis for the laity, a crisis for the clergy, a crisis for the bishops and, increasingly, a crisis for the Pope himself.

It has caused great damage to the victims, who need to be considered first. In some cases the psychological damage will last a lifetime. The crisis has damaged the image that the Church has of itself; it has damaged the authority of the Pope.

Priests see themselves as men of spiritual values, disciplined in their personal lives and requiring considerable personal sacrifices, including the sacrifice involved in a life of celibacy. They usually have the respect of their own communities.

It is still the case that congregations usually trust their own priests; that is true of the Catholic Church and of the Church of England, but it is easy for the Catholic clergy to feel they may be suspected of criminal conduct with children, which they find as outrageous as does everyone else. Like MPs who have never abused their expenses, many priests must feel that they are suffering guilt by association.

Most clergy live relatively austere religious lives. The proportion who have ever had sexual allegations made against them is about one in 200. That proportion has been high enough to cast some degree of suspicion on the priesthood as a whole. The clergy are able to do their work because they are trusted, and that trust has been damaged.

The Catholic Church of previous eras had a policy that sexual offences should be hidden. This policy of “cover-up” has done the greatest possible harm, both to the victims, who were not believed, and to the spread of abuse. Until about ten years ago, most Catholic bishops thought it was their duty to protect the Church from scandal; they mistakenly believed that secrecy would act in the interest of the Church.

They protected paedophile priests from the police; they persuaded the unfortunate victims to sign secrecy agreements; they kept the stories out of the press; they moved the peccant priests from one parish or diocese to another. Families were persuaded that their children, who had suffered abuse, were fantasists or liars. La polémique enfle, Mitterrand va s'expliquer

LE FIGARO: Alors qu'Henri Guaino ou Brice Hortefeux soutiennent le ministre de la Culture, qui s'exprimera ce soir sur TF1, Xavier Darcos lui demande de «clarifier les choses». A gauche, des élus exigent son éviction du gouvernement.

La grande explication. Frédéric Mitterrand va tenter jeudi soir sur le plateau du 20 heures de TF1 de justifier un passage de son livre «La mauvaise vie» écrit voilà cinq ans, alors que la polémique sur cet extrait de son ouvrage, où il raconte avoir eu recours à de jeunes prostitués en Thaïlande, n'en finit pas de rebondir.

Henri Guaino, conseiller spécial de Nicolas Sarkozy, s'est indigné sur France 2 de cette controverse, lancée à l'initiative du Front National. «Tout cela est plein d'excès, tout cela est assez indigne au fond», explique Henri Guaino, pour qui «il n'y a pas de faits», puisque Frédéric Mitterrand n'a fait qu'écrire un livre.

Autre soutien au ministre de la Culture, celui de Brice Hortefeux, qui dit ne pas être au courant que ce livre existait et s'interroge sur la réalité des faits écrits. Selon lui, «c'est un sujet qui est parti très rapidement. Comme c'est très rapide, précisément, il faut se méfier des jugements à l'emporte-pièce et des culpabilités pré-annoncées». Et le ministre de l'Intérieur d'ajouter : «Je ne connaissais pas Frédéric Mitterrand avant son entrée au gouvernement, j'observe aujourd'hui que, comme ministre de la Culture, il est unanimement salué, reconnu, respecté de tous par sa compétence». >>> S.L. Vilipendé pour son livre, Mitterrand contre-attaque
LE FIGARO: La polémique, déclenchée lundi par le Front national, gagne du terrain, notamment dans les rangs socialistes.

Quatre ans après la parution de son livre «La Mauvaise vie» [sic], où il relatait ses expériences de tourisme sexuel en Asie, la polémique rattrape Frédéric Mitterrand. Après la charge lancée lundi par le Front National, le ministre de la Culture, jusqu'ici silencieux, a choisi mercredi de contre-attaquer : «Se faire traîner dans la boue par le Front national est un honneur», a-t-il ainsi lâché laconiquement à la sortie du Conseil des ministres. Et, face aux critiques de certains socialistes, il s'est contenté d'estimer : «C'est bien dommage de pouvoir imaginer que des élus de gauche aillent rejoindre le Front national».

C'est en effet après le passage de Marine Le Pen sur le plateau de Mots-Croisés, sur France 2, que la polémique a enflé lundi. A l'occasion d'un débat sur les délinquants sexuels, la fille du leader du FN lit des extraits du livre de Frédéric Mitterrand, paru en 2005 aux éditions Laffont. Des extraits qui sont en fait un ensemble de citations mises bout à bout.
