Has the US Fallen Out of Love with Instant Coffee?

Feb 13, 2024 | Americans drank an estimated 517 million cups of coffee daily in 2022 spending almost $110 billion on the beverage that year. Cold brews, espresso-based beverages and perfectly roasted beans are among the top drinks for today’s coffee aficionados trying to get their caffeine fix. But one segment of the US market has given up ground. Instant coffee, the kind that dissolves in hot water, has seen consumption fall to just 4% of American coffee drinkers. By comparison instant coffee accounts for about 25% of the coffee consumed globally. Nescafé, Swiss-based food giant Nestlé’s largest coffee segment, is one of the world’s biggest coffee brands. Worldwide one in seven cups of coffee consumed is a Nescafé.

Drinking Coffee for Longer Life
There's encouraging news for the world's coffee addicts. US researchers have found that people who live longer tend to be people who enjoy a caffeinated cup or two - as long as you stay away from the milk and sugar. The study from the US government's Cancer Institute studied more than 400,000 people, and found drinkers of two to three cups a day had a 10 - 13 per cent chance of outlasting those who eschew the brew. But as the good news percolated through the bean scene, cafe dwellers said they would have continued with their daily fix - even if the study's had given the opposite results. ARAB NEWS: RIYADH, 5 February 2008 — A Saudi mother of three, who works as a business partner and financial consultant for a reputable company in Jeddah, didn’t expect that a trip to the capital to open the company’s new branch office would have her thrown behind bars by the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

Yara, a petite 40-year-old woman, was in tears yesterday after she narrated to Arab News her encounter with a commission member that ended in high drama.

Yara, who has been married for 27 years, said she spent several hours in the women’s section of Riyadh’s Malaz Prison, was strip-searched, ordered to sign a confession that she was in a state of “khulwa” (a state of seclusion with an unrelated man) and for hours prevented from contacting her husband in Jeddah.
