European Commision Chief von der Leyen Says EU Will Suspend Bilateral Ties with Israel | DW News
Sep 10, 2025 | The conflicts in Russia and Gaza have overshadowed a speech to the European Parliament by the bloc's most powerful political official.
During her State of the Union speech in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she would seek sanctions and a partial trade suspension against Israel over its actions in Gaza. She also condemned the drone incursion in Poland and said building up the continent's defenses was central to the EU's agenda. That exends to investing in protecting Europe's eastern flank, von der Leyen said, from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.

Investor Confidence in EU Drops after Trump’s Brussels Trade Deal
THE GUARDIAN: Agreement is said to ‘dampen the mood’, with the US viewed as the winner at the expense of the eurozone
Investor confidence in the EU has fallen sharply after Donald Trump’s trade agreement with Brussels, amid mounting concern about the economic hit from the US president’s tariff war.
The latest snapshot from the Sentix index showed that investor sentiment fell significantly at the start of the month after the deal last week between Trump and the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen.
The data provider said its weekly survey of thousands of investors in more than 20 countries showed that the pact was a “deal that dampens the mood”, with Trump and the US viewed as “winners” at the expense of the eurozone.
“The result is devastating for the eurozone,” said Manfred Hübner, the managing director of the Sentix economic index. “The current situation and expectations are both declining. The wrinkles of concern in the economy are deepening again.” » | Richard Partington | Senior economics correspondent | Monday, August 4, 2025

EU Leaders Back Ursula von der Leyen for Second Term as President
THE GUARDIAN: Estonia’s PM, Kaja Kallas, set to become the EU’s top diplomat, while former Portuguese PM António Costa takes over as president of the European Council
Ursula von der Leyen has clinched the nomination to serve a second term as president of the European Commission, despite Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni’s complaints of a “wrong” process.
Estonia’s prime minister, Kaja Kallas, is set to become the EU’s top diplomat, representing the bloc on the world stage for the next five years. The former Portuguese prime minister António Costa has been elected to take over as president of the European Council, putting him in charge of finding compromises between the 27 heads of state and government.
At the end of an EU summit that was devoted to Europe’s future and security policy, Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, tweeted: “Kaja, Ursula and António accepted. Defence plans accepted. No 10 Daren’t Admit It, but Ursula von der Leyen Is Right: We’ll Be Going Back on Brexit
THE OBSERVER: The case for rejoining the single market and the customs union grows stronger by the day. A future Labour government can’t ignore it
The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, says the direction of travel is clear: Britain will one day rejoin the EU. Photograph: Jean-François Badias/AP
There was little doubt who came ahead in the spat between Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, and Rishi Sunak last week over Britain rejoining the EU. She began her salvo acknowledging that the EU had “goofed up” in losing Britain, but that it would fall to her children’s generation “to fix it”. The “direction of travel was clear”. Britain one day would rejoin.
The substance behind No 10’s inevitable refutation was so threadbare that it bordered on the comic. But then there is no better defence to hand. The prime minister, intoned his spokesman, did not think Brexit was in danger, trying to reinforce the point by declaring: “It’s through our Brexit freedoms that we are, right now, considering how to further strengthen our migration system. It is through our Brexit freedoms we are ensuring patients in the UK can get access to medicines faster, that there is improved animal welfare. That is very much what we are focused on.”
Is that it? Apart from the fact the claims are at best half-truths, at worst palpable falsehoods, as a muster of Brexit “freedoms” they fall devastatingly short of the promises made during the referendum campaign. Recall the economic and trade boom, a reinvigorated NHS, cheap food, controlled immigration and a reborn “global” Britain strutting the world. It’s all ashes – and had today’s realities been known in 2016, we would still be EU members. » | Will Hutton | Sunday, December 3, 2023
The UK will have to re-join the EU at some point. It is inevitable. It is not a question of if, but of when. The UK will not thrive outside of the EU. The UK and the EU need each other: the relationship is symbiotic. The sooner we return to the fold, the better it will be for both parties. – © Mark Alexander

UK Should Rejoin EU to ‘Fix’ Brexit, Says Ursula von der Leyen
THE TELEGRAPH: European Commission president says she tells her children ‘we goofed it up’ when discussing UK’s departure from EU

The United Kingdom should rejoin the European Union to “fix” Brexit, Ursula von der Leyen has said, after Labour pledged to forge closer ties with the bloc if elected.
The European Commission president said “we goofed it up” when asked if Britain could ever reverse Brexit on Tuesday night in Brussels.
She was speaking amid much improved UK relations since the signing of Rishi Sunak’s new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland in February and after the shock victory of Geert Wilders, who wants the Netherlands to leave the EU, in Dutch elections last week.
“First of all, thank God, with the Windsor agreement, we had a new beginning for old friends. Very important,” Mrs von der Leyen said at an event hosted by the Politico website.
“And then I must say, I keep telling my children, you have to fix it. We goofed it up. You have to fix it. So I think here, too, the direction of travel, my personal opinion is clear.” » | James Crisp, Europe Editor | Wednesday, November 29, 2023
