"Fire in Every Direction": Palestinian Author Tareq Baconi on Gaza, Zionism & Embracing Queerness
Nov 6, 2025 | Palestinian writer Tareq Baconi joins us to discuss his new memoir, Fire in Every Direction, a chronicle of his political and queer coming of age growing up between Amman and Beirut as the grandson of refugees from Jerusalem and Haifa. While "LGBTQ+ labels have also been used by the West as part of empire," with colonial projects seeking to portray Native populations as backward and in need of saving, "there's a beautiful effort and movement among queer communities in the region to reclaim that language," says Baconi. "I identify as a queer man today as part of a political project. It's not just a sexual identity. It expands beyond that and rejects Zionism and rejects authoritarianism, and that's part of my queerness."
Baconi also comments on the so-called ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the election of Zohran Mamdani in New York City. "Palestinians are the ones that have to govern Palestinian territory, not this international force that comes in that takes any kind of sovereignty or agency away from the Palestinians," he says.

‘We Need to Have the Right of Self-determination and Freedom’, Says Former Palestinian Activist
Oct 22, 2025 | We spoke to Hanan Ashrawi, former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organisation.
We asked her if the reason the US hadn't set a deadline for Hamas to disarm was because of the risk of both sides walking away from the peace deal. We also asked Hanan Ashrawi what she thought of Sir Tony Blair being in charge of Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
Sir Tony has said the plans were "the best chance of ending two years of war, misery and suffering and I thank President Trump for his leadership, determination and commitment"
Israel maintains that it is adhering properly to the ceasefire terms and strenuously denies any accusation of ethnic cleansing in the Palestinian territories.

War Could Return to Gaza as Israel Sets Impossible Ceasefire Conditions: Analysis
Oct 16, 2025 | Hamas return the remains of two more Israeli captives but admits that it will need specialised equipment and assistance to locate bodies still buried beneath the rubble.
Israel says there will be no advance to next phase of Gaza peace plan until Hamas returns the remains of all 28 captives.
US President Donald Trump has acknowledged the challenges of finding the remaining bodies and has spoken about the difficulty of retrieving the bodies from destroyed areas in Gaza, calling it a “gruesome process”.
Middle East and Gulf politics analyst, Luciano Zaccara, warns Israel's ceasefire terms are impossible, risking renewed Gaza war as Trump faces a credibility test in Middle East.

Hamas Mobilises Fighters in Gaza as Fears of Internal Violence Mount | BBC News
Oct 11, 2025 | Hamas has recalled about 7,000 members of its security forces to reassert control over areas of Gaza recently vacated by Israeli troops, according to local sources.
The mobilisation order was reportedly issued via phone calls and text messages which said the aim was to "cleanse Gaza of outlaws and collaborators with Israel" and told fighters to report within 24 hours.
Reports from Gaza suggest that armed Hamas units have already deployed across several districts, some wearing civilian clothes and others in the blue uniforms of the Gaza police.
It comes as a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas enters its second day, and currently seems to be holding.

» | Sophie Barkey | Sonntag, 5. 'Tony Blair? For God's Dake!' | Trump's Gaza Peace Plan Attacked
Sep 30, 2025 | Donald Trump's peace plan has been labelled a "great disappointment" for failing to address a number of issues including Palestinian self-determination or the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.
Mustafa Barghouti from the Palestinian National Initiative said the agreement was "full of mines" including the role of Sir Tony Blair, who he said was not trusted in the region following his involvement in the Iraq War when he was the British prime minister.

Trump’s Gaza Ceasefire Plan, the Beautiful Lie of Peace & Ugly Reality of Occupation: Marwan Bishara
Sep 30, 2025 | Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, argued that Trump’s Gaza peace plan is simply a continuation of decades of failed, US-backed deals that always favour Israel at the expense of Palestinians.
He said Hamas has been cornered since 2024, with the war on Gaza waged in genocidal terms, now rebranded as diplomacy.
Bishara described Netanyahu as a “pathological liar” and a political survivor who, like his predecessors, manipulates agreements to Israel’s advantage.
He stressed the need for historical context, recalling how past peace processes only entrenched occupation, settlement expansion, and Palestinian marginalisation.
Bishara warned that while Gaza might get a temporary respite, nothing fundamental will change because Israel can always rely on unconditional US support.
He concluded that despite appearances of change, the cycle of occupation, settlement, and violence will persist, leaving Palestinians trapped in the same struggle.

Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu Agree Gaza Peace Plan | BBC News
Sep 30, 2025 | Hamas is reviewing a Gaza peace plan announced by US President Donald Trump in the White House on Monday.
The 20-point plan includes an end to fighting, the return of Israeli hostages and an international "Board of Peace" to help run Gaza, which would include former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Trump - who announced the plan alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu - says if Hamas doesn't accept, he gives Israel "full backing to do what you would have to do".
Meanwhile, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza, saying its air force hit 160 targets across the Strip on Monday.

Trump’s Peace Plan Will Not Solve the War in Gaza
Sep 30, 2025 | “This isn't going to resolve the war… And I suspect the war will continue and Israel will continue to pursue its objective.”
Donald Trump's 21-point peace plan for Gaza is a “step forward” to resolve the conflict, but Binyamin Netanyahu's “long term” goal of eliminating Hamas will still continue, says The Wall Street Journal’s Gerry Baker.
