Michael Lambert: Britain's Economy Is a Sinking Ship Post Brexit

Apr 22, 2023

A very interesting and true analysis, but very depressing to boot. The UK is indeed like a sinking ship. In fact, it resembles the Titanic.

Many of the people who pushed for the madness of Brexit have fallen silent; indeed, so may of them are not to be seen anymore: they are lying low. The reason for this is clear: they can see the damage they have done to the UK economy and, by extension, to people’s lives and living standards.

Many, if not most, of those arch-Brexiteers, the ones pushing so hard for the UK to leave the EU were public school educated. The fiasco of Brexit is no advert for sending one’s child to be educated in such schools. It is clear that despite their outward erudition, they understand little about either economics or geopolitics. One could call them duffers.

Brexit should be reversed as soon as possible. Michel Barnier has stated in an interview that in spite of all, the EU would—surprisingly—accept us back. But clearly not on the favourable terms we had. Personally, I would welcome dumping the pound sterling in favour of the euro. Ever since the Great War, the value of sterling has declined precipitously anyway. Indeed, its value has generally halved every decade ever since about 1918.

Outside of the EU, the UK has no good future. This country belongs to the European family of nations. Vive le Royaume-Uni dans l'Union Européenne ! – © Mark Alexander

Michael Lambert: Failing Home Secretary Finds a New Minority to Victimise

Another great and truthful video. It’s all very depressing stuff, though. But how could it be otherwise? This is all largely self-inflicted pain. Pain brought about by xenophobes, Europhobes, zealots, pig-headed people on the far right and ideologues. The rest of us are having to pay a very high price for their determination to drag this country out of the greatest, most successful single market in the world, the Single Market.

The result of all this has been for the UK to lose power and influence in the world. Further, that our living standards are now in terminal decline is going to be a constant source of embarrassment to us all. Of course, the bigots that brought this dreadful state of affairs upon us are sitting pretty. They are all not only very rich but are also being paid a king’s ransom for screwing up the country.

Before us are difficult times. We can look forward to little comfort or cheer. And to think that before that ridiculous Brexit, this country’s economy was doing pretty well. Clearly the ne’er-do-wells at the top had not heard of the old saying, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ – © Mark Alexander

Michael Lambert: Worst UK Government Ever? (After Truss and Johnson)

Jan 21, 2023 | The UK government of Rishi Sunak is incompetent presiding over chaos and collapse. This week the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman confirmed when challenged by a holocaust survivor that she stood by her description of asylum seekers as being an 'invasion'. Sunak responded to six questions from Keir Starmer at PMQ's about ambulance waiting times by criticising the Opposition for not backing his anti-strike legislation. The Chairman of the Conservative Party and former Chancellor of the Exchequer is believed to have settled with HMRC several millions in unpaid taxes.

There is widespread evidence of fraud and corruption and incompetence at the highest levels of government. Whilst we are experiencing a massive cost of living crisis and the economy is collapsing Sunak confirms his main priority is to stop asylum seekers crossing the Channel in small boats.

Michael Lambert: Brexit – A Massive Confidence Trick

Jan 14, 2023 | Brexit was about money. It was about protecting the interests of a small and wealthy sector of the economy concerned with money-laundering and tax avoidance The EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive which was due to be implemented in June 2016 would have severely restricted the activities of wealthy individuals and companies to avoid taxes using secretive UK tax havens. 'Taking Back Control' and the promises of cheaper food clothing and footwear were simplistic and dishonest messages which persuaded millions who knew no better to vote to leave the EU

An excellent synopsis. Never were truer words spoken. You've really hit the nail on the head with this great video. The politicians in favour of Brexit knew exactly how to manipulate the man in the street, didn't they? And the man in the street fell for the twaddle hook, line and sinker. Brexiteers bought into the nonsense being peddled at the time; and they were really taken in. They were played by the politicians like the proverbial fiddle.

I was raised in a Conservative-voting household and raised also to be proud of 'king and country'. I'm afraid that I no longer feel the way I was raised to feel. All the warts have been exposed for the whole world to see; and the Conservative Party is as corrupt as corrupt can be. Most of the politicians that I see are not especially bright or competent either. Many of them are chancers.

I read in the last few days that there is now talk of that 'BoJo the clown' might well be on the way back. Another corrupt politician and an incompetent, self-aggrandising buffoon to boot. The quicker I find a way out of this hellhole, the better it will be, the happier I will feel. Living in my home country makes me feel like a fish out of water. It's as bad as that. It was bad before, but Brexit has put the kibosh on any good feelings I had left for my country.

It is my sincere belief that this country will find it difficult to recover from the difficulties it now finds itself in. Furthermore, its international reputation has been trashed by successive, ridiculous Conservative prime ministers and recent events. The weather in the UK makes it all the more depressing. Her Majesty the Queen held it all together wonderfully, but now that she has passed, it is difficult to see even how the monarchy won't continue to get even shakier.

Happy days! – © Mark Alexander

Hope for Labour as Sunak Shows Tories Are Out of Ideas

Jan 7, 2023 | This week prime minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer both gave speeches aimed at outlining their policies and strategies for the coming year. Whilst Sunak's speech contained many vague, vacuous and meaningless aspirations, Starmer's speech included plenty of new ideas. Sunak barely mentioned Brexit, in a single sentence referring to the agility of UK regulations post exiting the EU as being an opportunity to seize. Starmer reminded us that he had been a 'Remainer' but that he had been unable to disagree with those who had voted to leave. Whilst Starmer mentioned global warming, AI and an ageing population, Sunak failed to mention any of these major issues. Sunak presented his five pledges including legislation to stop small boats crossing the Channel whilst Starmer outlined his proposals to devolve powers from an over-centralised Westminster.

Surely Some of the Worst UK Politicians Ever?

Dec 31, 2022 | The worst UK politicians of 2022 , a year which has been one of chaos, confusion, incompetence and corruption within the British government. Three prime ministers, four chancellors, a disastrous financial statement by Kwasi Kwarteng on behalf of Liz Truss. The UK economy is failing not least as a result of Brexit despite both Rishi Sunak and Kier Starmer both saying they will make it a success.

In this video we announce winners, runners up and third places for six categories, The worst politician of the year, the stupidest MP, the worst bully, the 'Silly Billy' award for saying or doing something that is likely to be regretted, an award for helping with contracts to supply PPE and the most ridiculous MP of the year.

Michael Lambert: Back to Being the 'Sick Man of Europe"

Dec 17, 2022 | I have been in business for more than fifty years since before the UK was a member of the EU. For many years I dealt with small companies in Italy before having to switch to China where quality, reliability and prices were all unbeatable. I noticed how the Chinese were working so hard to produce cheap consumer goods, whereas we in the West seemed to take it easy and enjoy the benefits.

Mrs Thatcher's decision to move to a service-based economy whilst manufacturing declined left us vulnerable. The 2008 economic crisis was the time that we should have decided to concentrate on IT and other high-tech sectors, but instead the government chose austerity. Since then we have struggled and many suffered whilst the rich have become richer. Faced with declining living standards a majority were persuaded that the EU was the reason for our decline and that if we left things would improve.

Now that we have finally left the EU, it is clear to all but the most ardent and disillusioned believers in Brexit that it was a terrible mistake. Our economy is now in a terrible state and deteriorating, and people are angry. The government's response under a very weak and clueless prime minister, Rishi Sunak, is to try to focus the country's anger on desperate asylum seekers who risk their lives to cross the Channel

Another great synopsis. I can't disagree with anything you said. It was all the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Thank you! I was going to make Brits' sense of superiority the focus of my comment today, but then you said exactly what I had been thinking. I, too, really believe that one of our biggest problems is the reluctance of Brits to embrace the truth about this country's size and influence. So many people are deluded: they think that Britannia still rules the waves! They just can't get it into their heads that we are merely a medium-sized country, just like other European nations. For years, we were able to box above our weight. But, now, that cannot go on. The sooner we Brits come to terms with reality, the sooner we will heal. One way or another, our destiny lies in Europe. After all, we are Europeans. But believe this or not, I actually know some people who deny even that obvious fact! Again, thank you for your hard work and clearly-expressed message today. – © Mark Alexander

Michael Lambert: UK Becoming an Authoritarian State?

Dec 10, 2022 | The UK is gradually becoming an authoritarian police state. The economy is collapsing and there is a massive cost of living crisis. People are angry and more and more unions are striking or planning to strike causing even more damage to the economy.

The government will find it difficult to concede to any wage demands and will, therefore, have to confront the unions. The former Home Secretary, Priti Patel, introduced Draconian new laws giving the police extensive powers to stop and search without cause, or ban protests for trivial reasons such as making too much noise.

A new bill going through Parliament will give the current Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, even greater powers including being able to restrict those who she even suspects of intending to attend protests and which could also be used to prevent picketing.

We should be very concerned indeed that these powers are leading us towards becoming a police state.

Brexit Is Not All Bad News - These Are Some of the Benefits

Dec 3, 2022 | The UK economy is in decline and much of this decline has been caused by Brexit. Whilst it is very difficult to find any benefits for the majority of the UK population, there are, however, plenty who will benefit. These include EU businesses which are able to take advantage of the withdrawal of UK suppliers, UK businesses which can now take advantage of the removal of EU regulations, the black economy and the , mostly foreign, owners of our utilities. Brexit has made the UK the laughing stock of the world.

Michael Lambert’s book BREXIT - It's not going too well, is it? is available from his website here.

I'm afraid that my comments each week [here on YouTube] are becoming repetitive and boring, because I always agree with just about everything you say. Today, I must agree with everything you say yet again! One couldn't put a cigarette paper between your understanding and mine of the mess we Brits now find ourselves in because of Brexit. All I see before us now is doom and gloom. Without someone from some party having the courage to stand up and say enough of this nonsense, it is impossible to see how our future can ever be rosy again. I can never again vote Conservative because of Brexit (and the mess the party has made of the economy). I have never voted Labour, though I might have considered it if Keir Starmer were to promise to take us back into the EU, and that leaves the Liberal Democrats. Now that party is attractive, and I like its leader, too. But I cannot for the life of me understand why he doesn't capitalise of this golden opportunity and promise the electorate that, if it puts its trust in him and his party, he would take us back into the European Union as full members in a heartbeat. But he, like Starmer, is timid of doing so. This is a tragedy for him and his party, for I feel absolutely certain that it would be a HUGE vote winner for the Liberal Democrats. In fact, I feel that it could knock the Tories into third place. In any case, the Tories need to go the way of the Whigs and the dodo: into oblivion. The party is past its sell-by date. It is corrupt and made up of fossils and relics of a bygone age. This country needs a business-friendly party which is pro-EU. One with its eyes firmly on the future, not looking back to this country's past but now evaporated glory. – © Mark Alexander

Brexit - Just How Stupid Do They Think We Are?

Nov 26, 2022 | Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster. Rishi Sunak, Jeremy Hunt and Keir Starmer all know this and yet they all insist that it can be made to work.

At a time when the economy is in deep crisis, when the NHS, the police and other social services are struggling to survive the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, says stopping asylum seekers crossing the Channel in little boats is the government's top priority.

Jeremy Hunt says he does not accept OBR figures for the country's economic decline following Brexit whilst quoting OBR forecasts for six years ahead.

Keir Starmer, now one of the staunchest supporters of Brexit meanwhile talks unrealistic nonsense to the CBI about how Labour will fix the economy.

Michael Lambert: Economy Collapsing But Don't Mention Brexit

Nov 19, 2022 | The UK economy is doing very badly. We are the only economy in the G7 that has not yet returned to pre-Covid levels. We are forecast to be the nineteenth slowest growing economy in the G20 just ahead of Russia next year. We are the only country in the G7 now in recession and our standard of living is forecast to diminish by 7% over the next two years.

Despite all of this, politicians both the government and the opposition, continue to pretend that this has nothing to do with Brexit but it is the result of Covid and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Millions face poverty over the coming two years, whilst the NHS, social services and the police are in meltdown. Unless and until we confront the problems caused by Brexit our decline will continue.

Michael Lambert: The Tories Cannot Solve the Mess We Are In

Nov 12, 2022 | The British economy is in trouble. Already in recession and forecast to be the 19th slowest growing economy in the G20 ahead of Russia next year, there seems little prospect of things improving any time soon.

Sunak's government is tired and out of ideas. The prime minister is weak and he knows it. Faced with a cost-of-living crisis, inflation, widespread strikes and a budget this week which is expected to include tax rises and spending cuts, there seems little room for optimism.

As can be seen from some of the comments on last week's video, there are still many who believe Brexit was a good idea.

Michael Lambert: Brexit Is Destroying the UK Economy and Reputation

Nov 5, 2022 | Brexit was a stupid and reckless self-inflicted blow to the UK economy. The decision to leave the EU in order to search for bigger and better trade deals all over the world was always bound to fail.

The 'control' which the UK government sought to take back was illusory. Brexit has resulted in huge shortages of workers in many vital sectors of the UK economy.

Until a decision is made to try to move closer to the EU by negotiating, at the very least, easier flows of goods the British economy is destined to decline. My short satirical history of Brexit is available from my website here.

Rishi Sunak Shows His Weakness by Making Suella Braverman Home Secretary

Oct 29, 2022 | By appointing Suella Braverman as Home Secretary, a post from which she was sacked a week earlier for leaking classified documents to right-wing friends, Rishi Sunak has shown his weakness and that he is beholden to the right-wing of his party.

Despite listing a range of areas in which he plans improvement, all of which will cost billions, the new prime minister is faced with a failing economy, voter dissatisfaction and mounting problems.

His cabinet, nineteen of whom voter 'remain' in the referendum is made up of old faces who have mostly failed before.

Sunak's decision not to attend COP27 in Egypt next week is a further terrible mistake

Tories Choose Third PM This Year As Reality of Brexit Bites

Following the resignation of Liz Truss after just 44 days in office, the Tories are choosing their fifth prime minister in six years and the third this year. In the meantime, the economy is in serious difficulty with soaring prices and interest rates, food shortages and widespread anxiety.

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt are expected to be joined by the disgraced Boris Johnson who was rejected by his party and forced to resign less than three months ago

. Whilst Sunak has the support of the majority of the parliamentary party, Johnson is still popular with the members of the Tory party who are likely to be asked to choose if a winner is not decided upon on Monday. BREXIT - It's not going too well, is it?"
