Kenya Court Rules Islamic Courts Are Illegal

BBC: Kenya's Islamic courts are illegal and discriminatory, a panel of judges has ruled.

The three judges said the Islamic "Kadhi" courts favoured Islam over other faiths, and that this was unconstitutional as Kenya was a secular country.

The issue of Islamic courts has been a contentious point in the country's new proposed constitution.

It is due to go to a referendum in August. >>> | Monday, May 24, 2010

Muslims Mass-producing Children to Take Over Africa, Says Archbishop

Spot on, Bish! If you hadn’t noticed, this is what Muslims have been doing in the West for years, but the tossers that are said to lead us won’t acknowledge it. – © Mark

TIMES ONLINE: One of the most powerful figures in the Anglican Church believes that Africa is under attack from Islam and that Muslims are “mass-producing” children to take over communities on the continent.

Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, 56, was elected Primate of Nigeria last week and his elevation could exacerbate tensions at a time when Anglicans are working to build bridges with Muslims. Dr Michael Nazir-Ali resigned as Bishop of Rochester earlier this year to work in countries where Islam is the majority religion.

Nigeria is split almost half and half between Christianity and Islam. There are about 17 million practising Anglicans in the country, but they face persecution in the north, while the two faiths vie with local religions for supremacy in the rest of the country.

Archbishop Okoh made his controversial comments about Islam in a sermon in Beckenham, Kent, in July. He said that there was a determined Islamic attack in African countries such as Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.

“They spend a lot of money, even in places where they don’t have congregations, they build mosques, they build hospitals, they build anything.

“They come to Africans and say, ‘Christianity is asking you to marry only one wife. We will give you four!’ ” Archbishop Okoh described this as “evangelism by mass-production”. >>> Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent | Monday, September 21, 2009

Barack Obama's Half-brother George Arrested in Kenya over Drugs

THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama's Kenyan half-brother, George, has been arrested by police in Nairobi on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

The 24-year-old, who denies the allegation, was told he would face a court hearing on Monday.

President Obama's young half-sibling was in the headlines last year after it was revealed that he was living in a corrugated iron shack in a sprawling slum as his brother ran for the most powerful job in the world.

George, who was the son of Mr Obama's father by his second wife, was one of the president's few close relatives who did not travel to Washington for the inauguration on Jan 20.

The two met previously when Mr Obama visited his ancestral homeland in an encounter that he described as a "painful affair" in his memoir Dreams from My Father.

Inspector Augustine Mutembei said the trainee mechanic would face charges of possession of cannabis and resisting arrest. >>> By Philip Sherwell in New York | Saturday, January 31, 2008

Barack Obama Fever Grips Kenya

Kenyans woke up in a fever of anticipation that the most powerful man on earth could soon be Barack Obama.

In a printing shop in Kisumu, the capital of Senator Obama's ancestral home province in Kenya, Jumah George had no doubts about the election result even before the polls opened.

He had brought in a rugby shirt to have Mr Obama's image imposed on it. "I don't want it to say 'for president', I want it to be 'president'," he said.

"I'm optimistic. The world right now is interested in change. Everybody wants change and I believe Barack will bring change. He will benefit the whole world.

"Our focus is not material benefits but the change he can bring in each and every person, the attitude. That's what's inspiring about him."

Mr Obama's father and namesake grew up in Nyangoma Kogelo, a small village in Nyanza province, and the election has created huge excitement.

All the country's main newspapers splashed on the vote today, with the Daily Nation declaring it "Obama's defining moment", and the Standard offering a "16-page Obama Magic Souvenir pullout".

To Kenyans, Mr Obama's impressive rhetorical skills have bolstered his appeal almost as much as his father's nationality.

Samuel Obambo, 25, a sales executive from Siaya, the Obamas' home district, wore an Obama T-shirt and said: "He's a good man, he's able, he's a family man, he shows love to everybody.

"It will be good because tourists will come, investors, whatever. We are going to have a lot of changes in Kenya, especially in Kisumu."

Milka Achieng, 40, a street hawker, added: "He's got a good vision and he loves all, both poor and rich men."

The streets of Kisumu, lined with stalls selling cheap clothing and household goods, are thousands of miles and a world away from Washington, and the Obama story has a special resonance.

"For a black man to make it seemed impossible," said Lucas Ooko, 35, a newspaper vendor, who is also from Siaya district. "It's a miracle whose time has come and nobody can stop it now." >>> By Sebastien Berger in Kisumu | November 4, 2008

BBC: Kenyan MPs have called for an airport in the west of the country to be upgraded for Air Force One in case Barack Obama wins the US elections.

Mr Obama's father was born in Nyanza Province and the MPs say the local Kisumu airport should be expanded in case he wants to visit.

The Illinois senator is a local hero in his father's homeland, where a local beer has been named after him.

Mr Obama has never lived in Kenya and he has visited just three times.

The MPs from Nyanza Province said it was clear that Mr Obama was going to clinch the US presidency, the private Nairobi Star newspaper reported. >>> | October 17, 2008

Anti-Obama Author Questioned by Kenyan Officials

CNN: NAIROBI, Kenya -- Kenyan immigration officials on Tuesday questioned the author of a book that is highly critical of Sen. Barack Obama, Kenyan police said.

Jerome Corsi, who wrote "The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality," left the immigration building in Nairobi several hours later and went to the airport, according to a Corsi assistant who spoke to CNN.

The assistant, who did not give his full name, said Corsi had been picked up before he was able to hold a news conference about the release of his book in Kenya. He said Corsi was not detained, but that Kenyan authorities said one of his immigration forms was missing. Anti-Obama Author Questioned by Kenyan Officials >>> | October 7, 2008

Gaddafi Attacks Obama on Israel

BBC: Libya's leader has strongly criticised US presidential candidate Barack Obama for saying Jerusalem should remain the undivided capital of Israel.

Col Muammar Gaddafi said he was either ignorant of the Middle East conflict or lying to boost his campaign.

Mr Obama was speaking to pro-Israel lobbyists in the US last week.

Referring to him as "our Kenyan brother", Col Gaddafi also said Mr Obama might suffer from an inferiority complex because of his African origins.

The issue of race could make Mr Obama's behaviour "more white than white people", Col Gaddafi suggested, rather than acting in solidarity with African and Arab nations.

The comments came during a speech to mark the 38th anniversary since the US evacuated Wheelus Air Force base in Tripoli.

Israel claims Jerusalem as its "eternal, undivided" capital, but the Palestinians want the eastern half - occupied by Israel in 1967 - as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Gaddafi Attacks Obama on Israel >>> June 12, 2008
