Michael Lambert: Nigel Farage's £5 Million Cover-up Is Falling Apart

August 7, 2026 | Nigel Farage triggered a by-election in Clacton — not for his constituents, but to distract from a parliamentary inquiry into an undeclared £5 million gift from a Thai-based crypto billionaire.

His plan: win big, claim a mandate, and make the inquiry look like political persecution. It hasn't gone to plan. The main parties refused to stand. He's running against Count Binface and 33 others. He'll win — but on a reduced majority and a humiliatingly low turnout. And in September, the inquiry resumes anyway.

If the Parliamentary Standards Committee suspends him for 10 or more days, a recall petition follows — requiring 10% of Clacton voters' signatures. That triggers yet another by-election. More humiliation. More decline.

This is a man who built a 25-year political career on being the plain-speaking outsider. Now he's the one dodging questions about £5 million he "forgot" to declare. The beginning of the end? I think so.

July 17, 2026 | I went to the seaside this week. I went to Clacton to experience the excitement of the coming by-election; but what I found was something much more concerning for our democracy.

I spoke to more than 40 people, and what astonished me was the sheer number of voters who knew nothing about the by-election or simply didn't care about politics at all.

Of those who did, the divide was stark: either a cult-like devotion to Nigel Farage, or a damning view of him as an opportunist chancer.

Nigel Farage is indeed a charlatan. I agree with you totally. Unfortunately, many people in this country are not discerning enough to be able to observe his character flaws. I cannot help but worry for the future of democracy in this country. July 8, 2026 | Rattled Nigel Farage has been left humiliated as his “cynical political stunt” to quit as an MP and trigger a by-election in his own seat spectacularly unravelled.

The under-fire Reform chief, who said he would fight in the Clacton contest, desperately attempted to frame the fight as a “people versus the establishment by-election”.

Critics said he had “jumped before he’s pushed” amid a probe by the parliamentary commissioner for standards over his failure to declare a £5million gift from Thai-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before his election as an MP.

Aug 19, 2024 | How does Clacton feel about their new MP, Nigel Farage? Farage has just defended a huge payment from GB News after being revealed as the highest-earning MP. Farage, who was elected to serve Clacton, said he is receiving almost £98,000 a month for presenting GB News.

The recently published register of MPs' interests stated the payment was made for a reported 32 hours a week. Farage's declaration of gifts stated he had visited the US from July 17 to July 19 directly after the state opening of Parliament. He made reference to the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump as the purpose given for his visit.

He claimed he had travelled to Milwaukee to "support a friend who was almost killed". He also claimed to have been there "to represent Clacton on the world stage".

Jun 22, 2024 | This week I visited Clacton-on-Sea, the town which voted 73.04% in favour of Brexit and where Nigel Farage is standing in the coming general election.

Clacton is a small seaside town of 50,000 population. The town centre is shabby and neglected. The people in Clacton appear to be poor and deprived. It is evident that many people are overweight, no doubt because of poor diet, and many are dependent upon mobility scooters.

There are eleven charity shops in the town centre. There are homeless people in the town who clearly need help.

Clacton voted overwhelmingly in favour of Brexit and yet it seems clear that they have suffered from its consequences. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, is standing for Parliament and could well be elected on 4th July as the MP for Clacton. It is very doubtful how keen he will be to devote time and attention the poor citizens of Clacton, though.


About Clacton… As you said, it’s not Bel Air or Knightsbridge. Nor, as a seaside town, is it Nice! The descriptors that immediately come to mind are depressing, sad, shabby, and, in parts, tacky. Clearly, the town has seen its best days.

But in fairness to Clacton, it is surely not alone. So many towns up and down the country look sad these days. Shopfronts right and left are so often boarded up. Brexit has taken its toll, of course; but so has the Internet with online shopping. When visiting a town outside of London or the home counties, salubriousness is not to be expected anymore, and if it is found, one must be surprised. – © Mark Alexander
