Why Elon Musk Interferes in Politics around the World | DW News

Jan 4, 2025 | Tech billionaire Elon Musk is planning a live online discussion next week with the candidate for chancellor of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, Alice Weidel.

The chat is expected to take place on Musk's platform X. It is his latest endorsement of the AfD ahead of Germany's general election on February 23rd. Last weekend, Musk caused outrage when he described the far-right party as the country's "last spark of hope" in an opinion piece in a German newspaper. Political leaders in Germany have accused him of election interference, considering his close relationship with US President-elect Donald Trump.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread! Elon Musk is playing an extremely dangerous game. He is attempting to rekindle old embers. To start with, he should keep his nose out of other countries' internal political affairs; and secondly, given Germany's particularly painful recent past, it is particularly unwise and potentially explosive. My advice to Musk: Leave the Germans sort out their own democratic affairs. The same goes for the UK. We Brits don't need the world's richest man to steer our political affairs either. We Brits are quite capable of sorting out our own affairs, just like the Germans. Stick to making mountains of money instead!

– © Mark Alexander
