In the beginning there was darkness; in 2006 there is still darkness!

The world's scientific community united yesterday to launch one of the strongest attacks yet on creationism, warning that the origins of life were being "concealed, denied or confused".

The national science academies of 67 countries warned parents and teachers to ensure that they did not undermine the teaching of evolution or allow children to be taught that the world was created in six days.

Some schools in the US hold that evolution is merely a theory while the Bible represents the literal truth. There have also been fears that these views are creeping into British schools.

The statement, which the Royal Society signed on behalf of Britain's scientists, said: "We urge decision-makers, teachers and parents to educate all children about the methods and discoveries of science and foster an understanding of the science of nature. Knowledge of the natural world in which they live empowers people to meet human needs and protect the planet. World scientists unite to attack creationism by Sarah Cassidy

I saw something interesting on a car here today. The Christian symbol of the fish (with the word "Truth") eating a fish with legs. The message was clear.

For me, as a Christian, I don't worry about any science which contradicts the Word as I understand it. I call that attitude "faith." Maybe that's naive on my part, but that's how I see the matter.

Of course, I studied about evolution at the university. But, again, man's "knowledge" never trumps God's sovereignty, IMO.

Mussolini,
When I get a chance, I'll stop by to read your information.

Was it? Please explain!

Phew!

Shouldn't that read: Man's knowledge never trumps God's sovereignty; but of course, it depends on whether God's word has been chronicled - and interpreted - correctly?

Mussolini,
Cain's wife--always has been a bit of a puzzle for many Bible readers.

Mark,
The meaning of those two fish was this: The truth consumes an unproven theory. A fish with legs is a symbol which Darwinists use as a kind of parody of the Christian fish with the Greek letters.

it depends on whether God's word has been chronicled - and interpreted - correctly?

True. But you know what? I don't worry so much about reconciling faith and science, which are two different areas. Because of their different natures, neither field can prove or disprove the other.

I will say this about Darwinism, and it's something I've observed in young students....If we are all just so much flotsam at genetic whim, then where is the value of human life? Darwinism leads to equality of life--animals, plants, humans. Now I love fauna and flora, but believe that human life is more important. Which is not to say that mankind should not be good stewards of God's creation (a clause I've borrowed from some religious teaching I had).

Have you heard about Spain's push to give simians civil rights? Good grief!

Thanks for the explication. Duh! :-)

Ditto!

Well I haven't heard that one LOL!

I'm with the scientists on this one but I guess we can't agree on everything. I spent thirty years in the church but have sort of drifted away. Well okay, i have drifted away but am still a fan of Christ and Christian values.

I don't like the old testament - (half of it is violent madness) - and to me Christianity is the new testament only.

At the end of the day we can only decide for ourselves.

There are many like me who accept the theory of evolution and support Christian values, including many scientists.

As for the eternal questions of where the universe came from and how life began on earth - I just don't know.

I just thought a good example of a Christian evolutionist is Dr. Jack Wheeler at "tothepoint.com"

He calls his site "the oasis for rational conservatives", and that it is:

The Pro-America, Pro-Capitalist, Pro-Western Civilization
"Intellectual Ammunition Service" for Defenders of Liberty.

I subscribe to this site and pretty much agree with his viewpoints. I think Jason Pappas has a link to it also.

It's interesting that you should mention this. The Muslims I worked with in the Middle East often used to say the same thing. They consider Al-Injil (The New Testament) as the book of Christians, minus The Old Testament.

It seems that Christians can be rather selective in their approach to this, citing what is forbidden in The Old Testament to Christians if it suits them, but rejecting some of the other parts.

Leviticus is a good case in point. In that book, so many things are forbidden; yet Christians cite only some of those things to forbid their Christian brothers, and ignore the rest.

I think the Church has been rather remiss in not being clearer about this point.

Mussolini:

I believe only the collossal arrogance of man can egotistically declare that man's vaunted fallibility would insure a Supreme God could not preserve His message to man.

Profound indeed! Would you kindly let me in on a secret? Which vitamins are you on? :-)

More specifically: Which fish do you eat for brain food? :-)

I'm impressed!
