We need to toughen up to deal with Islam

A triumphant Zacarias Moussaoui shouted "America, You lost" and made a V for Victory sign after he escaped the death penalty last night for his role in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In a stunning defeat for the Bush administration, a federal jury ruled that the only man convicted in America for a role in the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon should not be executed but should spend the rest of his life in prison. Life for Moussaoui

This from The Times:

THE only man convicted for the attacks of September 11, 2001, was spared execution as a jury decided yesterday that Zacarias Moussaoui will spend the rest of his life in prison.

After seven days of deliberation the 12 members of the jury at the court in Alexandria, Virginia, failed to reach unanimous agreement that he should die by lethal injection.

In their 42-page verdict form, they rejected arguments that Moussaoui was seeking martyrdom or was mentally ill. But three members decided that he had only limited knowledge of 9/11, and described his role in the attacks as minor. There was also support for mitigating factors such as his violent and dysfunctional backgound, as well as the racism that he had encountered as a youth. 'America, you lost,' he shouts as his life is spared

And again this from The Telegraph:

Zacarias Moussaoui's family in France blame the British for what happened to a once-carefree youth.

They trace the great change in Moussaoui's life to the moment the 23-year-old arrived in Britain in 1992, to attend a business studies course at South Bank University, after graduating in engineering in Perpignan in southern France.

Until then, his family and friends agree, the young man had been full of smiles. He had gone to bars and drunk beer and had a French girlfriend, with whom he ultimately shared a flat. The couple even won a dance contest.

He vowed to make his fortune in London and after a few months managed to get a place to study for an MA in international business studies. But in the ultra-tolerant atmosphere that existed in London before the September 11 attacks, such "wayward" young Muslims were exactly the material being sought by radical Islamists. What did you think of his family in France blaming it all on London? Isn't that ridiculous. To apportion blame, they need look no further than their own religion.

There is absolutely no doubt that the British authorities have allowed far too much radical preaching to go on unhindered. That, too, is a disgrace.

But the real root of the problem is the hatred that the death cult of Islam teaches them.

I fail to see how we are going to be able to deal with this, given current attitudes in the West, and the abysmally poor knowledge of what Islam is all about. If things go on like this, then victory is in the bag for these people.

Wait for the stupid British infidels to tie their own hands behind their backs, something they have proved extremely good at. Given a little more time ins'allah, we will have our flags flying over No. 10, and sharia will prevail over all of Europe, and not one drop of moslim blood will have to be spent in martyrdom.

Yes, I'm afraid we're giving it all away. These people must think that Westerners are weak and stupid.

Alas, not only do we not have any leadership in this country (US), but people have become soft and fuzzy-headed. A justice system that lets O.J., Michael Jackson, and Moussaoui off is a pathetic failure. Moreover, this is sad confirmation of the fact that we in the West deserve our freedoms less and less. Witness the comments of the jurors on the Moussaoui case following the verdict; these folks are stupid, weak, and generally disgusting! The taxpayers will have to keep this vermin, Moussaoui, for years at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars... How stupid and incompetent and weak is this???

Not only do we not have strong leadership, but it would seem that the West now has a soft justice system, too!

The people who gave this sentence need to wise up on the nature of Islam. This sentence will only confirm to our enemy that we can indeed be vanquished. This is a sad day for justice.

Moreover, this is sad confirmation of the fact that we in the West deserve our freedoms less and less.

Westerners, alas, have become complacent at every turn. Weakness will not overcome our enemy. Our enemies are cold and determined and cruel and unrelenting.

Witness the comments of the jurors on the Moussaoui case following the verdict; these folks are stupid, weak, and generally disgusting!

For cases like this, we need special jurors: People who understand the nature of the enemy we are confronted by.

Yes, and why should the poor taxpayers have to foot the bill for keeping this man alive. As you say, "vermin" is the right name for such 'people'. This man doesn't deserve to live. Lethal injection, too, would be too good for him. He should have been sentenced to hanging, or sent to the electric chair!

Generally, I am not actually in favour of the death sentence, because too many mistakes have been made in the past; but in cases such as this, I believe it is absolutely necessary. After all, these people are attempting to destroy our civilization.

JudahQ:

Each of us will die one day, Moussaoui as well, and then (as Christians believe) we will face our Maker for His judgement on each one of us.

Zacarias Moussaoui will not escape justice.

It must be said, though, that this is not a universal belief.

Meanwhile, this will be his life for the next forty or so years:

He will be kept in a 2.4m x 1.5m cell, 23 hours a day. He will have no chance to mix with other inmates and only fleeting contact with staff.
His desk, bed and stool will be made of poured concrete, his mirror of steel. A tiny slit in the wall will be his only source of natural light.
If he is allowed TV it will be B&W showing only educational and religious programmes. His only comfort may be a copy of the Qur'an (and what comfort is that?)

Knowing that to be his sentence, do you not think he is being punished?

Yes, perhaps, if this really will work out as you say. But who knows what laws will be passed in future; and who knows if people will campaign for his early release.

They say now that there is no chance. But you know as well as I, circumstances change. So what guarantee have we got that he won't be released?

However, no matter how despicable you may find another human, if you are a Christian then these words should matter to you:

Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."
(see Romans 12:18-20)

Yes, JudahQ. But there are enemies and enemies. We are at war. This is no normal criminal. This man, along with his other jihadist friends, are out to destroy all that we hold dear. I think different rules should apply here. It could even be argued that he shouldn't have been tried in a normal court in the first instance. A military court might well have been far more suitable for him.

Further, we should remember this: Many have been sentenced to death for far less! Moreover, keeping him in jail for all that time is going to cost the taxpayer dear. Should the taxpayer really be burdened with all these expenses? In addition, there are many more like him out there. If caught, should the taxpayer pick up the tab for their incarceration also? Where will it all end?

Rehabilitation is out for him; so what point is there in keeping him alive?

These people are cruel and cold and determined. We shall have to get tougher in future to ward off the evil they pose us.

But I do understand where you are coming from on this. This is a typical Christian perspective.
