As you wrote, this is hardly a surprise. It's just that our "clueless politicians" are in denial, and that denial is dangerous for the long-term security of the world.
There's little point in dealing with this situation as we would like things to be, but as they actually are. That is key, in my opinion.

Well, it's certainly true that we Westerners are not doing enough to keep its superiority. Standards of behaviour, dress, morals, and educational standards, and many other things, have certainly declined in recent years, especially since the 1960's.
Whether this is a temporary blip or whether it is indicative of a long-term trend is difficult to discern.
But if we are not very careful, Western civilization will be eclipsed, since we are not doing enough to defend it. We are also allowing far, far too many Muslims in to our countries. They'll do their best to bring us down. This is insanity!

Did you ever think an Islamist would be saying almost the same as you Mark? This was in yesterdays Aftenposten (a Norwegian newspaper).

He (Krekor)claimed that "our way of thinking... will prove more powerful than yours." He loosely defined "western thinking" as formed by the values held by leaders of western or non-islamic nations. Its "materialism, egoism and wildness" has altered Christianity, he claimed.

We're the ones who will change you," Krekar told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet in his first interview since an uproar broke out over cartoons deemed offensive to Muslims.
"Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes," Krekar said. "Every western woman in the EU is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries are producing 3.5 children.
"By 2050, 30 percent of the population in Europe will be Muslim."
Isn't he low on the estimate of Muslims in Europe by 2050?

I saw that article. Frightening prospect!
Whether this might be a rather low estimation depends on what happens to Western thinking from here on in. Will Western women, perhaps, come to the conclusion that having more babies isn't such a bad thing after all? Will it become fashionable to have bigger families? Will there be a sea-change in Western thought brought about by the Islamic threat?
It is hard to imagine at the moment. But there is such a thing as a survival instinct. That might well kick in at some point in the future. Though it is hard to see that it will from this vantage point.
With present trends, though, he probably has underestimated the statistics. And that's depressing!
