Barack Obama Sworn In Again, But Without a Bible

TIMES ONLINE: He's sorted out the legalities, but could Barack Obama have made the first political mistake of his presidency?

After constitutional law experts questioned the validity of his swearing-in because of a fluffed line in the oath of office, Mr Obama moved quickly to quash speculation that his presidency was in any way illegitimate.

John Roberts, the Chief Justice charged who helped bungle the oath on Tuesday, was summoned to the White House and, in front of a small pool of reporters, Mr Obama carefully and accurately repeated the 35-word oath prescribed by Article 2 of the Constitution.

Barack Obama Should Retake 'Fluffed' Oath

THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama should take the oath of office again after Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts made him fluff one of the lines, US constitution experts have claimed.

Failure to do so could lead to four years of arguments or legal writs by extremists that Mr Obama is not a legitimate president.

Mr Roberts' gaffe, which led him to be dubbed the "oaf of office" by one US newspaper, came when he pronounced crucial words in the wrong order. THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama Retakes Oath after Mistakes at Inauguration

US President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office for a second time, after a series of mistakes and pauses marred his first attempt during the inauguration ceremony.

Chief Justice John Roberts readministered the oath to the president in front of reporters at the White House.

The White House counsel said in a statement read by a spokesman the oath was administered a second time out of an "abundance of caution." >>> | Thursday, January 22, 2009
