EuroMillions: Lottery Winners Scooped £184m with Lucky Dip Ticket

BBC: The UK's biggest EuroMillions lottery winners have been revealed as a couple from Gloucester who scooped £184m with a lucky dip ticket.

Joe and Jess Thwaite won a record-breaking £184,262,899 - making them richer than Adele - last week.

Mrs Thwaite, 44, who has two children with her 49-year-old husband, said the win will give them "time to dream".

The previous record was held by an anonymous winner who banked £170m in October 2019.

After being introduced by TV presenter Dermot O'Leary at a glitzy ceremony on Thursday, Mr Thwaite confirmed that he had already left his job as a communications sales manager.

His wife is also "considering" what to do about her role in a hairdressing salon she runs with her sister. With video » | BBC | Thursday, May 19, 2022

Record £113 Million Lottery Jackpot: Euromillions Winners Found?

THE TELEGRAPH: Four friends are believed to have won the £113m Euromillions jackpot, according to reports.

The Sun reported that the friends, who are aged between 25 and 40, are from Coventry where the ticket was bought.

It said the four of them were staying in a London hotel and receiving advice from financial experts at Camelot, the lottery's organiser in the UK.

The newspaper named one of the men as 28 and said his name was Daniel.

It quoted a relative called Stephen saying: "All I know is that Daniel has gone to London and that he's won it with three other guys. He can be a bit of a joker, but if he is lying about this it will crucify his grandparents. The family are being very cagey and not saying much."

The winning ticket is worth £113,019,926. >>> Andy Bloxham | Friday, October 22, 2010

Catholic Church Condemns Italy's Record Lottery

THE TELEGRAPH: Italy is in the grip of lottery fever, with a record £113 million (131.5 million euros) up for grabs in the country's national draw, now the world's richest.

Italy is deep in recession and unemployment is on the rise, but millions of Italians are buying up tickets for the lucky numbers game, despite the odds of winning estimated to be one in 622 million.

Although draws are held three times a week the prize has not been won since January, with people in neighbouring countries making special trips to Italy to try their luck in guessing the six winning numbers.

The size of the jackpot has surged past the previous record of 126 million euros, which was paid out by Euromillions in Spain in May.

But the Roman Catholic Church condemned lotto fever, saying it encouraged greed, false hope for society's poorest families and a worship of money that amounted to idolatry.

"Fever for SuperEnalotto has for many people become a form of idolatry and should be stopped as soon as possible," said the archbishop of Lecce, Cosmo Franceso Ruppi. >>> Nick Squires in Rome | Wednesday, August 12, 2009
