Inmates Bullied into Converting to Islam
SKY NEWS: Sky News has learned that increasing numbers of British inmates are being bullied into converting to Islam while in jail.
The Prison Officers Association says it is symptomatic of the growing power and influence of Muslim gangs in prison.
However, there are also concerns that some of those converts could be radicalised by more extremist elements in prison.
Sky News spoke to one young woman who said her brother was being bullied by members of a Muslim gang, who were trying to force him into converting to Islam.
The woman did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals against her brother, who is serving a sentence in excess of 10 years in a high security prison in England.
She said: "He just looks like a broken man ... he's tearful on visits. I'm just really scared for him."
She also claimed the bullying had taken a more violent turn: "He's been physically assaulted. He's had black eyes.
"In the showers, he got threatened with a knife. He's not going to back down. He's not going to convert for anyone."
She added: "He just spends his time in hiding in his cell. He's got at least another five years to serve. I don't know how much longer he can hold out." » | Mark White, Home Affairs Correspondent | Sunday, October 20, 2013

SUN NEWS: A landmark project exploring why women convert to Islam wraps up at England's prestigious University of Cambridge this weekend.
Organizers say that one of the main reasons for hosting Narratives of Conversion to Islam in Britain is "a general sense of frustration" with the media's "one-dimensional portrayals of female conversion."
They say that these focus on women who marry into the faith, and suggest that they do so at the expense of their independence and liberty.
"Judging by what the media tends to write about Islam, you would expect liberal-minded, intellectually-engaged women from non-Muslim backgrounds to give it a wide berth," Prof. Yasir Suleiman, the project's leader, says on the university's site.
"It seems to be a religion that clashes with our ideas about modernity. Yet, the paradox is that there is a noticeable number of well-educated, intellectually-engaged women with high-flying careers who are choosing to become Muslims. So the question is, how do we explain this?" » | QMI Agency | Sunday, January 29, 2012

SUNDAY EXPRESS: MUSLIM prisoners have launched a reign of terror inside a top security British jail.
The fanatics are forcing fellow inmates to convert to Islam or face punishment beatings.
One man who stood up to the thugs was branded with a lump of hot metal, according to a prison source.
The crisis at Whitemoor jail in Cambridgeshire has led to calls by staff for the 100 Muslim inmates there to be dispersed to other prisons round the country.
Some Al Qaeda supporters have set up a kangaroo court, sitting in judgment on prisoners and ordering punishments, the source said.
The violent disciples of Osama Bin Laden have targeted even the toughest non-Muslim prisoners, including killers and rapists.
Local Tory MP Malcolm Moss said: “They are a law unto themselves. The governor should sort these problems out.”
Mr Moss, who recently visited the jail with Prisons Minister David Hanson, added: “There is a fear in the prison about what Al Qaeda stands for and what they can do. There are threats made to people to make them convert and if they lapse it is even worse.
“It is not an easy situation for the prison officers working there. Either additional resources should be made available or better training.”
Brian Caton, general secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association, said: “We have been calling for the Muslim leaders to be dispersed to other jails. The service must step in to break up this gang culture with immediate effect.”
Concern over the way Whitemoor is being run surfaced last week when it was revealed an Al Qaeda terrorist had been training to be a stand-up comic. >>> By James Murrey | November 23, 2008

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Ian Huntley, the killer of schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, is considering converting to Islam, it has been claimed.
Huntley, 34, serving life at the maximum security Frankland Prison in County Durham, has started reading the Koran on a daily basis after befriending two Muslim inmates, according to The People.
The Soham killer is thought to have turned to the small group of Muslim inmates in Frankland after being threatened by other prisoners.
He has even asked them to take him to a prayer meeting after finding the passages of the Islamic holy book the Koran are helping his state of mind following three failed suicide attempts.
Only 20 of the 734 inmates in Frankland prison are Muslim. Hussain Osman, jailed for life for his part in the failed July 21 bombings, is one of Huntley’s more high-profile inmates.
A prison source said the former school caretaker lives in constant fear and feels he has something in common with the small Muslim population at Frankland, who also feel they face persistent harrassment.
Huntley’s flirtation with Islam comes just a month after a leaked Home Office report raised concerns that young male prisoners are being brainwashed by Muslim gangs and that the prison system is becoming a recruiting ground for Islamic extremists.
