Scotland’s former first minister Nicola Sturgeon has described the day she was arrested as “horrific” and “the worst day of her life.”

In an exclusive interview with ITV News, ahead of the release of her memoir, Frankly, Sturgeon talks about the day of her arrest, telling Julie Etchingham, "I think a part of me just closed down."

In a wide-ranging and frank discussion, the former first minister also expressed regret in her handling of transgender legislation during her time in office, admitting she should have “paused” the legislation when the debate became polarised.

She writes in her book, “I have never considered sexuality, my own included, to be binary,” adding that she was “enjoying being her own person for a while”.

Amber Warning as Storm Floris Brings Damage and Disruption

BBC: An amber weather warning is in place for most of Scotland as Storm Floris batters the country with winds of up to 85mph.

Homes have lost power, trains and ferries have been suspended and people urged to avoid travel in mainland Scotland, the Western Isles and Orkney until 23:00.

Vehicles have been blown over in Glasgow and Skye, while the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and other major events have been cancelled.

'Trump, Go Home': Scotland Erupts in Rage; US Consulate 'Stormed' over Support to Israel on Gaza

Jul 27, 2025 | US President Donald Trump played golf Saturday at his course on Scotland's coast while protesters around the country took to the streets to decry his visit. Trump and his son Eric played with the US ambassador to Britain, Warren Stephens, near Turnberry, a historic course that the Trump family's company took over in 2008. Hundreds of protesters gathered on the cobblestone and tree-lined street in front of the US Consulate about 100 miles (160 kilometres) away in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital. Speakers on a makeshift stage told the crowd that Trump was not welcome and criticised his role over Gaza and Ukraine wars.

Man Arrested in Glasgow for Holding Sign Allegedly Supportive of Palestine Action

THE GUARDIAN: Arrest under the Terrorism Act happened after the man refused to stop displaying the sign when asked by police

A man has been arrested in Glasgow for holding a paper sign allegedly supportive of the proscribed direct action group Palestine Action, the third arrest of its kind across the city in the past week.

Police Scotland confirmed that the 64-year-old man, who had been speaking to a small group of protesters gathered at Nelson Mandela Place in the city centre on Friday afternoon, had been arrested in connection with an offence under the Terrorism Act “for displaying a sign expressing support for a proscribed organisation”.

The sign read “Genocide in Palestine, time to take action” with the words Palestine and action larger than the others. Every Pensioner in Scotland to Receive Winter Fuel Payment Next Year

Nov 28, 2024 | The Scottish government has announced that all pensioners in Scotland will receive a winter heating payment in the year 2025 to 2026.

The devolved benefit, if passed, will help the estimated 900,000 people north of the border who were cut off from accessing the winter fuel payment - which was universal until changes were made under the Labour government in September.

Under the devolved government's plans, those in receipt of pension credit or other benefits will receive a £200 or £300 payment depending on their age, while all other pensioners will receive a reduced payment of £100.

I can’t say that I am shocked by yesterday’s election result. Donald Trump is a coarse, vulgar, unrefined man who appeals to a large section of American voters. Trump’s re-election tells us exactly who the Americans are. Be under no illusions! The Americans of today are not the Americans of yesteryear. The Americans who fought in the Second World War were a different breed. Just take a look at a picture of Americans in the 30s and 40s and compare that picture with one taken today.

In voting for Trump, American voters have played fast and loose with their Constitution, fast and loose with their freedoms, and fast and loose with their future. Unfortunately, they have played fast and loose with our future, too. Americans who voted for Trump will deserve all they get; we won’t.

Alex Salmond, Former First Minister of Scotland, Dies Aged 69

THE GUARDIAN: High-profile politician reported to have collapsed after delivering speech in North Macedonia on Saturday

Alex Salmond, the former first minister of Scotland who led Scotland to the brink of independence, has died at the age of 69.

Salmond served as first minister of Scotland from 2007. He stood down from the role after failing to secure independence in the 2014 referendum, handing over to his deputy, Nicola Sturgeon.

Reports suggested that he collapsed after delivering a speech in North Macedonia on Saturday.

Scotland’s first minister, John Swinney, said he was “deeply shocked and saddened”.

Sep 19, 2019 | Buckingham Palace has expressed displeasure after the former Prime Minister David Cameron revealed that he sought the Queen's help during the Scottish independence referendum campaign. In a BBC documentary, Mr Cameron said that in 2014 he had asked if the Queen could intervene because he was concerned Scotland was going to vote for independence. The Queen later urged people to 'think very carefully' about the future.

Another former Conservative Prime Minister is also in the spotlight, as Sir John Major’s lawyers tell the Supreme Court that the current PM, Boris Johnson, was ‘dishonest’ about his reasons for suspending Parliament. Mr Johnson says progress is being made in Brexit talks with the EU.

An Islamic hate preacher said to have his own 'army' has launched an audacious bid to buy a Scottish island and turn it into his own state based on Sharia law. Sheikh Yasser al-Habib has raised £3 million to purchase the isle of Torsa, located off the west coast of Argyll and Bute.

He is said to be in 'advanced talks' to buy the land. The 45-year-old claimed asylum in the UK 20 years ago and runs military-style training camps for an 'army' group called Al-Shurta Al-Khamis.

He plans to build a school, hospital and mosque on the island which will be run on strict Muslim laws. THE TELEGRAPH: SNP outlines proposal to ban 'conversion therapy' after its self-ID law was blocked by UK Government

Parents who refuse to allow their children to change gender would face up to seven years in jail under SNP plans to ban “conversion therapy”.

Proposals published on Tuesday state that actions designed to “change or suppress” another individual’s gender identity, causing them physical or psychological harm, would become illegal under the radical law.

SNP ministers acknowledged that so-called conversion practices often took place in a “family setting”, raising the prospect that parents could be criminalised if they refuse to go along with their child’s declaration that they are transgender.
