Kate Joined by Children as She Hosts Carol Service

PA MEDIA

BBC: The Princess of Wales has hosted her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey - the biggest event in her return to royal duties after ending her chemotherapy.

It was a candle-lit, festive occasion, but also with some poignancy – as it came at the end of a year of health problems for Catherine and for some of the guests who have faced very difficult times.

Among the 1,600 guests were families affected by the Southport knife attack, and a candle was lit by Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, who had a cancer diagnosis.

The Prince of Wales joined Catherine at the service, along with the couple's three children - Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte. » | Sean Coughlan, Royal correspondent | Reporting from Westminster Abbey | Thursday, December 5, 2024; updated: Friday, December 6, 2024

Princess Diana’s Living Legacy Inspires But Is a Thorn in the Royals' Side

THE NATIONAL: A quarter of a century after her death, the humanity and vulnerability of the princess still holds wide appeal

Anywhere in the world the mere mention of Princess Diana’s name evokes feelings of admiration and awe on some level, regardless of how the divide between fans and detractors of Britain’s royal family is drawn.

The Princess of Wales, or the "Queen of Hearts" as she was fondly called by her avid followers, left an indelible mark on the family she married into at the age of 20.

Her death in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, sent shock waves around the globe and prompted a huge outpouring of grief. Closer to home, it left a black hole in the monarchy and a massive void in her young sons’ lives.

A quarter of a century on from that fateful day, the legacy Diana left behind still inspires her fans, intrigues authors and even haunts the institution with which she wrestled. ‘She was like a meteor’ » | Laura O'Callaghan | Tuesday, August 30, 2022

He was said to be three times over the drink limit. This compelling program seeks to answer the many questions overlooked by the enquiry and to uncover what really happened the night Diana died.

SAS Man Who Claims That Diana Was Murdered 'Flees to Thailand in Fear for His Life'

MAIL ONLINE: Unidentified Soldier N has said SAS were involved in Princess's death / He claims soldiers shone a light into the eyes of her driver, leading to the fatal car crash in 1997 / Police re-opened investigation into Diana's death in response / But now Soldier N has fled the country before he could be examined

An [sic] sniper who claims the SAS were involved in a plot to kill Princess Diana has reportedly fled to Thailand in fear of his life.

The anonymous soldier is said to be laying low in south-east Asia as police investigators probe claims that members of the Army helped cause the car crash that killed Diana in 1997.

It has been claimed that special forces agents shined a light into the eyes of Diana's driver, which led to him losing control of the car and hitting a pillar in a tunnel in Paris.

The sniper - known only as Soldier N - made the claims to police investigators, leading to the inquiry into the Princess's death being reopened.

But he fled the country before Scotland Yard could properly examine the evidence, which was handed over by the Royal Military Police, reported the Daily Star. Read on and comment » | Daily Mail Reporter | Thursday, September 26, 2013

Diana Film Is 'Completely Wrong', Says Former Lover

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: According to the tagline on posters for the new biopic portraying Princess Diana’s love affair with a Pakistani heart surgeon, “the legend is never the whole story.”

Now the man at the centre of the narrative, Hasnat Khan, has spoken out to insist that the film itself does not tell the whole story either, being based entirely “on hypotheses and gossip.”

Dr Khan, who was nicknamed Mr Wonderful by the Princess, launched a scathing criticism of the forthcoming big budget release, Diana, claiming it was “completely wrong” and vowing he would never watch it.

A still image from the film showing the actors playing him and Diana side by side at the hospital where they met was enough to convince him it would entirely misrepresent their relationship, he said.

“I don't see this movie doing well at all,” he said.

“It is based on gossip and Diana's friends talking about a relationship that they didn't know much about, and some of my relatives who didn't know much about it either. It is all based on hypotheses and gossip.” » | Rosa Silverman | Sunday, August 25, 2013

Scotland Yard Examines New Information on Death of Diana, Princess of Wales

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Scotland Yard has confirmed it is examining new information alleging the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was a criminal act.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime and Operations Command are assessing the “relevance and credibility” of new information regarding the death of the Princess and her close friend Dodi al Fayed in Paris in 1997.

It has been reported that new intelligence claimed the Princess was killed by a member of the British military, but Scotland Yard refused to give any more details about its nature.

The information is also believed to have been passed to the Met by the Royal Military Police, after being raised by the parents-in-law of a former soldier. The new dossier is said to include a reference to the Special Air Service, or SAS, Sky News reported.

If material has indeed been uncovered by another police force it could lead to it being attached more weight than numerous other conspiracy theories, which were rejected by an inquest in 2008.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The Metropolitan Police Service is scoping information that has recently been received in relation to the deaths and assessing its relevance and credibility. » | David Barrett, Home Affairs Correspondent | Saturday, August 17, 2013

Royal Book Exclusive: How Prince William Overcame Being Wounded by His Warring Parents as Their Marriage Fell Apart

MAIL ONLINE: At the age of 13, Prince William faced the daunting prospect of becoming a new boy in a school that was almost ten times the size of his old one. That was hard enough.

What made his transition to Eton far more of an ordeal was that no one — from masters to pupils — could fail to be unaware of the open warfare that was tearing his parents’ marriage apart.

Unlike his prep school, where the head often pretended the news-papers hadn’t been delivered, multiple sets arrived on the premises daily — and William could simply no longer be shielded.

So it was doubly unfortunate that, almost immediately after his arrival, his mother’s love life was once again making lurid headlines. This time, the man in question was the England rugby captain Will Carling, whom William had met several times with Diana.

For a boy trying to handle his first weeks at a big school, it was excruciatingly hard to bear.

But there was worse to come, as his house master Andrew Gailey soon discovered. While William was still settling in, Gailey learned that the Princess of Wales was recording an interview in secret for the BBC.

Concerned for his pupil, he phoned Diana and told her it was imperative to explain to William, face-to-face, what she was intending to do.

‘Is that really necessary?’ she said. It was, he said — but she refused to come. The next day he phoned again and was even more insistent. Reluctantly, she agreed to go to the school.

In the end, the meeting between mother and son lasted no longer than five minutes. Diana told William that the programme she’d recorded would not contain anything controversial.

It would make him proud of her, she assured him. And before he had a chance to ask any questions, she left. There’s no doubt she anticipated a magnificent triumph. ‘It’s terribly moving,’ she told her private secretary, when he asked what the programme contained.

On November 20, 1995, a large proportion of the nation sat glued to their TV sets in disbelief as Diana gave the performance of her life on Panorama. » | Penny Junor | Friday, May 04, 2012

Cannes Film Festival – Unlawful Killing: Film about the Death of Diana Likens Prince Philip to Fred West

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Given that its entire £2.5 million budget was paid for by Mohamed Fayed, the conclusions of a new documentary about the death of Diana, Princess of Wales were not entirely unexpected.

The film, called Unlawful Killing, asserts that the Duke of Edinburgh is a “psychopath” in the mould of Fred West, that the Princess was murdered by the Establishment and that the Queen and other members of the Royal family are “gangsters in tiaras”.

As the film was premiered at Cannes, its director, Keith Allen, tried to defend the “ludicrous” slurs on the monarchy as he was accused by the Princess’s closest friend of cashing in on her death.

Allen, best known for playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in the BBC’s Robin Hood TV series, had already upset those closest to the Princess by including a photograph of her lying fatally injured in the back of a car moments after it had crashed in Paris in 1997.

And the astonishing comments about the Royal family which are made in the film have provoked fresh contempt.

Rosa Monckton, the Princess’s best friend, said: “Why is he doing this?

“The only reason he could be doing it is to make money by appealing to the conspiracy theorists.

“I also think he’s an attention seeker.” » | Anita Singh, in Cannes and Gordon Rayner | Friday, May 13, 2011

Queen Mother on 'Abhorrent' Diana, Princess of Wales

THE TELEGRAPH: The late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, reacted with "utter abhorrence" to Diana, Princess of Wales's decision to "wash the dirty linen in public" by disclosing details of the breakdown of her marriage.

An official biography published today describes how Queen Elizabeth was "deeply shocked" when it emerged that Princess Diana had collaborated with Andrew Morton on the book Diana: Her True Story, which caused a sensation when it was published 17 years ago.

She was also dismayed by the Prince of Wales's decision to discuss his private life with the broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby for a TV programme in which he admitted he had been unfaithful.

Queen Elizabeth revealed her thoughts about her grandson's divorce in a series of previously unpublished interviews with Sir Eric Anderson, the former Provost of Eton College, which were made available to the biographer William Shawcross.

"It is always a mistake to talk about your marriage," she told Mr Anderson, who spent a total of 20 hours interviewing her.

Details of Queen Elizabeth's thoughts on the Royal divorce are contained in Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: The Official Biography, which was commissioned by the Queen.

In 1992, Andrew Morton's book disclosed that the Princess of Wales had attempted suicide on at least five occasions in the 1980s, suffered from bulimia and felt rejected both by Prince Charles and other members of the Royal family, including the Queen.

At the time of its publication, it was rumoured that the Princess herself had helped Mr Morton with the book, and after her death in 1997 Mr Morton confirmed that the Princess had indeed been the main source, and had even checked the proofs of the book for accuracy.

In 1995 the Princess recorded a Panorama interview in which she talked about the Prince of Wales's affair with the then Camilla Parker Bowles, saying: "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."

Mr Shawcross notes: "(Queen Elizabeth) had been sympathetic to both the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of York over the enormous pressures they faced from the media. But the washing of dirty linen in public was utterly abhorrent to Queen Elizabeth. >>> Gordon Rayner, Chief Reporter | Thursday, September 17, 2009

Princess Diana: Death 'Was Not an Accident' Says Leading Lawyer

THE TELEGRAPH: The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was not an accident, according to the memoirs of lawyer Michael Mansfield who represented Mohamed Fayed at the inquest into the crash.

The 1997 accident in the Alma Tunnel in Paris still poses unanswered questions despite lengthy inquest at the High Court, he claims in his book, Memoirs of a Radical Lawyer.

The 67-year-old QC, who has represented clients in high profile cases ranging from the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence to the Birmingham Six, insisted the inquest had not been a waste of time and that Mr Fayed was entitled to the procedure as “a grieving father”.

In the book, which is being serialised in The Times, he wrote: “I found it difficult simply to accept that what happened in the Alma Tunnel in Paris was ‘just one of those tragic things’. Of course it might have been, but then that’s what “they” always hope we will think.

“Judging whether a hidden hand is at work is always difficult, but I prefer a healthy and inquisitive assessment of the authorised version, and for me it was mere serendipity to be approached a year after the crash and asked to represent Mohamed Al Fayed for the purposes of an inquest.” >>> Alastair Jamieson | Wednesday, September 02, 2009
