Mitch McConnell: US Senator Freezes Up Again

Aug 30, 2023 | Top U.S. Senate Republican Mitch McConnell froze up for more than 30 seconds on Wednesday during a public appearance before he was escorted away, the second such incident in a little more than a month, a clip from an NBC News affiliate showed. McConnell, 81, was responding to questions from reporters after an event with the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce in Covington when he froze up, staring into space and not responding to reporters and others nearby. After being approached by a second person, McConnell resumed speaking but needed reporters' questions repeated to him and only answered two more questions. The longest-serving Senate party leader in history, McConnell's voice was shaky and quiet.

With all due respect, I don't think this man ought to run for re-election. Maybe he should think of taking early retirement instead! – © Mark Alexander

'Retire!': Mitch McConnell Heckled during Speech in His Home State

Aug 7, 2023 | Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, has been urged to retire by hecklers after freezing during a press conference last week. The 81-year-old senator attempted to make a speech at one of the state’s key political events, the Fancy Farm picnic, but was drowned out by the hostile crowd. Footage from Saturday’s gathering shows an unsmiling Mr McConnell talking from behind a podium as the crowd repeatedly boos and chants “retire”.

No wonder the Western world is in a mess! It is being led by geriatrics – old folks who should be contemplating their future in old folks’ homes rather than contemplating our future!

McConnell Hits Out at Guardian and Other Media over Amy Coney Barrett Scrutiny

THE GUARDIAN: Senate majority leader says reports of Barrett’s background in a Christian faith group ‘insult millions of American believers’

Top Republican Mitch McConnell lashed out on Wednesday at reports about Amy Coney Barrett’s background in a strict religious group which the Senate majority leader claimed “demean the [supreme court] confirmation process, disrespect the constitution and insult millions of American believers”.

Among McConnell’s targets was a Guardian report which said Barrett “lived in the home of one of the founders of the People of Praise while she was a law student, raising new questions about the supreme court nominee’s involvement with the secretive Christian faith group that has been criticized for dominating the lives of its members and subjugating women”.

Barrett is an Indiana-based appeals court judge whose strict Catholic views are the subject of concern among progressives, particularly over the fate of Roe v Wade, the 1973 supreme court ruling which made abortion legal across the US. » | Martin Pengelly in New York | Wednesday, October 7, 2020

Trump and McConnell Are the Twin Tribunes of America's Ruin – Vote Them Out

THE GUARDIAN: Under leaders as callous as these, the ravages of Covid-19, economic disaster and systemic racism can only get worse

Fate has been unkind to the United States. The nation is grappling simultaneously with a pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 130,000; the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression; and mind-numbing police brutality, which has generated the largest outpouring of grief and anger against systemic racism in memory.

Perhaps America’s greatest misfortune is that these crises have emerged at a time when its leadership is too incompetent to respond to them, if not maliciously dedicated to worsening them.

Donald Trump has not only refused to contain Covid-19 but is actively pushing Americans into harm’s way, demanding the nation “reopen” while cases and deaths continue to rise. Meanwhile, he’s siphoning federal money intended to dampen the economic crisis into the pockets of his cronies and family. And he is deliberately stoking racial tensions to energize his “base” for the upcoming election. As if this weren’t enough, Trump continues to attack the rule of law, on which a democracy depends in order to deal with these and all other challenges.

But he could not accomplish these abhorrent feats alone. Senate Republicans are either cheering him on or maintaining a shameful silence. Trump’s biggest enabler is the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell. » | Robert Reich | Sunday, July 12, 2020
