Dubai Briton Drops Appeal and Goes to Jail for a Month Over a Kiss

MAIL ONLINE: A British woman convicted of indecency for kissing a man in Dubai gave up the battle to prove her innocence yesterday and went to jail.

Estate agent Charlotte Adams believes she will get back to Britain quicker if she serves her one-month sentence.

The 26-year-old tourist, who has been stuck in the Arab state for five months, waived her right to a final appeal and was sent to Dubai Central Prison.

She was allegedly seen passionately kissing Ayman Najafi in a diner at the Jumeirah Beach Residence.

They were each given one-month prison sentences last month for breaching strict public decency laws.

The pair, both from North London, lost an appeal last month against their convictions.

At the time Miss Adams said: 'I want to go to jail straight away. I can't get on with my life at the moment. I'm stuck in this country with no money and I can't work.' >>> Daily Mail Reporter | Wednesday, April 21, 2010

I Kissed Tourist But Only On the Cheek, Says Briton Jailed in Dubai

MAIL ONLINE: A British businessman facing jail in Dubai after he was accused of kissing a woman in public has vowed to fight the charges and clear his name.

Marketing executive Ayman Najafi, 24, and British tourist Charlotte Lewis, 25, were accused of kissing on the lips and drinking alcohol after a fellow diner reported them to the authorities.

The pair pleaded guilty to drinking alcohol - and were fined £180 - but said they only kissed on the cheek and are appealing against breaking the country's morality laws. >>> Stephanie Condron | Saturday, March 13, 2010

It's Like "Swimming in a Toilet"!

A noxious tide of toilet paper, raw sewage and chemical waste has transformed Dubai’s most prestigious stretch of shoreline into a foul-smelling health hazard.

A stretch of the exclusive Jumeirah Beach — a magnet for Western tourists and home to a string of hotels — has been closed. “It’s a cesspool. Our tests show too many E. coli to count. It’s like swimming in a toilet,” said Keith Mutch, the manager of the Offshore Sailing Club, which has posted warnings and been forced to cancel regattas. The pollution is a blow to Dubai’s reputation as an international holiday destination offering almost guaranteed sunshine and clear seas. Sex-on-the-beach Couple to Be Deported from Dubai after Jail Sentences Are Quashed

MAIL Online: A British couple convicted of having sex on a beach in Dubai had their three-month jail sentences suspended today, their lawyer said.

Michelle Palmer, 36 and Vince Acors, 34, were freed at Dubai's Court of Appeal.

The pair will now be deported and ordered to pay a fine of £170, Acors' solicitor in London said.

Palmer said today's ruling 'proves our innocence'.

Speaking afterwards on her mobile telephone, she said: 'I'm not saying anything. It just proves our innocence after all the bad stuff that was written. That's it.'

Hassan Matter, who represented the couple in court today, said: 'The judge has cancelled the jail. He refused the prosecution appeal (for the sentences to be increased).

'They are free. It's wonderful. >>> | November 25, 2008

Dubai Beach Sex Lands British Pair in Jail

THE GUARDIAN: A British man and woman were today jailed for three months after being convicted of having sex on a Dubai beach.

Vince Acors, 34, of south-east London, and Michelle Palmer, 36, of Oakham, Rutland, were arrested on Jumeirah beach in the early hours of July 5, having met that night at a £60 all-you-can-drink champagne brunch.

As well as jailing the pair, Judge Hamdi Abul Kharr fined them 1,000 dirhams (£155) and ordered their deportation after they had completed their jail sentences.

Prosecutors said the pair were seen having sex on the each after being dropped off by a taxi.

But Palmer, who works on [sic] the emirate as a publishing executive, claimed they were "just kissing and hugging".

The pair's lawyer, Hassam Matter, had said witness statements, including one from a police officer, were wrong.

He said medical examinations proved Palmer did not have sex.

Matter said the pair were "upset" by the prison sentence and he would appeal against the verdict. Dubai Beach Sex Lands British Pair in Jail >>> Elizabeth Stewart and agencies | October 16, 2008

BBC: Dubai: Britons Guilty of Having Sex on the Beach

A British man and woman have been sentenced to three months in jail in Dubai after being found guilty of having sex on a beach.

Michelle Palmer, 36, of Oakham, Rutland, and Vince Acors, 34, of Bromley, south-east London, were arrested on 5 July.

The pair had denied charges of public indecency and having unmarried sex.

They were fined 1,000 dirhams (£160;$350) and will be deported after serving their sentences.

The pair were not at Dubai's Court of First Instance to hear the ruling but had been ordered not to leave the emirate.

Their defence lawyer Hassan Matter had insisted they would be proved innocent and said they were upset by the verdict.

"We are making an appeal against the verdict. They have not been arrested and taken into custody yet," he said. Sex-on-Beach Trial Britons Guilty >>> | October 16, 2008
