King Charles Unveils New Memorial to LGBT Veterans after Gay Ban Campaign | BBC News

Oct 17, 2025 | King Charles III has unveiled a memorial to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender military personnel after a decades-long campaign against a ban on being gay in the armed forces.

In his first official engagement in support of the LGBT+ community, the King visited the sculpture, named "an opened letter", at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

The memorial is dedicated to those from the LGBT+ community now serving in the forces, as well as those who served at a time when it was illegal to be gay in the military.

During the ban, which lasted until the year 2000, those who were gay - or were perceived to be - faced intrusive investigations, dismissal and in some cases imprisonment.

King Made More Than £1m Selling Land for Leg of HS2 That Was Scrapped

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Duchy of Lancaster has maximised profits on land deals despite claiming it ‘does not rely on taxpayers’ money’

King Charles’s private property estate has made more than £1m at taxpayers’ expense from the sale of land for projects linked to the leg of HS2 which will no longer be built, the Guardian can reveal.

The Duchy of Lancaster negotiated payments totalling £1,132,400 by selling land for road works near a proposed hub station in Crewe, Cheshire, in a deal that has emerged despite the organisation’s assertion that it is “completely self-financing and does not rely on taxpayers’ money”.
The duchy – which has been controlled by reigning monarchs since medieval times and exists to provide them with a private income – acquired a sprawling, 1,400-hectare (3,450-acre) estate set around the Jacobean mansion of Crewe Hall in 1936.

In recent years, some of the land has been sold to make way for new roads and housing developments. It is able to maximise its profits on these deals because it is exempt from most business taxes. » | Geraldine McKelvie, Senior correspondent | Saturday, September 20, 2025

King and Macron Toast 'Ever Closer' UK-France Ties at State Banquet

A screenshot taken from this article. | Photo: PA MEDIA

BBC: The King said relations between the UK and France are growing "ever closer" as he hosted Emmanuel Macron at a lavish state banquet at Windsor Castle.

The French president spoke of his confidence in ties between the countries as the pair dined alongside members of the Royal Family and some 160 guests, including Sir Mick Jagger and Sir Elton John.

Macron and wife Brigitte were earlier greeted at RAF Northolt by the Prince and Princess of Wales to kick off their state visit, before meeting the King and Queen in Windsor, while Macron also gave a speech in Parliament.

The three-day visit is the first by a French president since 2008, and the first by a European Union political leader since Brexit.

Starting his state banquet speech in French, the King welcomed Macron before remarking that much has happened since his own royal tour of France in 2023.

The UK and France "have stood ever closer since then", he said.

King Charles spoke of the deep cultural, political and historic ties between the two nations before turning to joint cooperation in facing cross-border threats in an uncertain world of "terrorism, organised crime and cyberattacks". » | Sean Coughlan, Royal correspondent | Jacqueline Howard, BBC News | Reporting from Windsor | Tuesday, July 8, 2025

How King Charles Will Help Rebuild the Shaken UK-France Friendship during the State Visit

BBC: Few scenes convey British pomp and soft power more than the King and Queen in a carriage procession through the picturesque streets of Windsor. They are being joined on Tuesday by Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron for the first state visit by a French president since 2008, and the first by a European Union leader since Brexit.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will be there too - a Royal Salute will be fired and Macron will inspect a guard of honour. But at a time of jeopardy in Europe, this three-day visit to Windsor and London promises much more than ceremony.

There is a genuine hope that the coming days will make a difference to both countries.

Macron will address MPs and peers at Westminster, and he and Brigitte will be treated to a state banquet back at Windsor. The trip will culminate with a UK-France summit, co-chaired by Sir Keir Starmer and Macron, during which the two governments hope to reach an agreement on the return of irregular migrants.

They will also host Ukraine's leader by video as they try to maintain arms supplies to his military.

But the wider question is how closely aligned they can really become, and whether they can put any lingering mistrust after Brexit behind them.

And, given that the trip will involve much pageantry - with the tour moving from the streets of Windsor, the quadrangle of the Castle and later to the Royal Gallery of the Palace of Westminster - how crucial is King Charles III's role in this diplomacy? » | Paul Kirby, Europe digital editor | Tuesday, July 8, 2025

French President Greeted by King Charles as State Visit Begins

BBC: Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte have been greeted by King Charles and Queen Camilla as the French president starts a three-day state visit to the UK.

The Macrons were greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales as they arrived at RAF Northolt in west London on Tuesday, before they met the King and Queen in Windsor town centre.

It is the first state visit by a French president since 2008, and the first by a European Union political leader since Brexit.

Among the issues likely to be discussed between Macron and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during the visit, will be how to stop small boats crossing the Channel. Downing Street has said the UK's relationship with France is "key" to tackling this problem.

"We expect to make good progress on a wide range of priorities, including migration, growth, defence and security, which will deliver on the interests of both the British and the French public," a spokesman for No 10 said.

"To be in Poland on International Holocaust Memorial Day... is both a sombre and indeed a sacred moment," the King said.

He went on to say it is a time when we remember the millions murdered in "violence and hatred" by the Nazi regime, adding it is a "moment when we recall the depths to which humanity can sink when evil is allowed to flourish, ignored for too long by the world."
