Britain Before World War II: The Royal Crisis and the Road to War | Full Documentary | Reupload

Britain in the mid-1930s was changing rapidly. New freedoms, modern industries and popular leisure activities were transforming everyday life, while Adolf Hitler's growing power in Nazi Germany raised fears of another war.

Newly colourised archival footage captures the rise of Butlins holiday camps, women's fitness movements and outdoor swimming pools. These glimpses of everyday British life contrast with preparations for possible gas attacks and rare footage of the Hitler Youth marching alongside the Britannia Youth movement in Kent in 1936.

The British monarchy also faced a crisis. Following the death of King George V, Edward VIII's decision to marry Wallis Simpson led to his abdication in December 1936 and the accession of George VI.

As Hitler expanded into Austria in 1938, Britain continued pursuing peace through Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement. From England's controversial football match against Germany in Berlin to the Munich Agreement, the country sought to avoid another conflict. See Britain in colour during a decade of social change, political uncertainty and efforts to maintain peace.
