Drought is set to be extended across England as the country braces for its fifth heatwave of the year.
Half of England and the whole of Wales are already in drought after the driest July since rainfall records began in 1836, 190 years ago. The National Drought Group, made up of regulators, government officials, water companies and agricultural bodies, will meet on Monday to decide if drought should be declared in more regions.
Two weeks ago, the Environment Agency (EA) listed Hertfordshire, the whole of London, East Anglia, Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Devon and Cornwall, the West Midlands and Wessex, which covers Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, as being in drought. » | Tom McArdle | Monday, August 10, 2026
