THE TELEGRAPH: While takeover plans have been dropped, Greenlanders have turned against the president forever
Growing up in Greenland, Tillie Martinussen was often struck by the reticence of her neighbours: they avoided offence and rarely showed emotion. To some extent, they mirrored the frozen, inscrutable landscape all around them.
“Greenlanders are very softly spoken people, we say things sort of under our breath,” Ms Martinussen, a 46-year-old former MP, told The Telegraph. “Even when it’s a touchy subject, it can be hard to discern what people mean.”
Then along came Donald Trump with his brazen – and at times nonsensical – campaign to seize Greenland by force. Everything changed after that, she said.
“Even my 75-year-old friend, whom I’ve known since I was born and have never heard swear, said, f--- Trump,” recalled Ms Martinussen. “And her friend, who is the same kind of person, and who can barely hold a cup of coffee, was saying, yeah f---Trump.”
There have even been cases of Greenlanders joking about turning their hunting rifles, usually reserved for Arctic foxes and caribou, on the president if he dares to set foot in Nuuk. » | James Rothwell, Nuuk | Saturday, January 24, 2026
