Germaine Greer: Transgender Women Are 'Not Women'

BBC: Australian-born academic and writer Germaine Greer has said that in her opinion, transgender women are "not women".

She also claims that "a great many women" who are not transgender think transgender women - who she refers to as "male to female transgender people" - do not "look like, sound like or behave like women".

Greer did say that she would be prepared to use female pronouns when referring to someone, if that was their preference, "as a courtesy". (+ video) » | Saturday, October 24, 2015

Pentagon Plan to Allow Transgender People to Serve in US Military

Defense Secretary Ash Carter
THE TELEGRAPH: Plan would give recognition to the 15,000 transgender people serving in silence in US military

The US military is finalising a plan to allow transgender people to serve openly in the armed forces it emerged on Monday night, ending what is seen as one of the last discriminatory barriers to active service.

The move would also offer recognition to the 15,000 transgender people who are thought to be currently serving in the military, many of whom keep their status a secret.

Ash Carter, the US defence secretary yesterday announced the plan to study "readiness implications of welcoming transgender persons to serve openly".

“We have transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines - real, patriotic Americans - who I know are being hurt by an outdated, confusing, inconsistent approach that's contrary to our value of service and individual merit," he said.

"Transgender men and women in uniform have been there with us, even as they often had to serve in silence alongside their fellow comrades in arms."

The armed services are expected to have six months to assess the impact of the change before it is introduced.

During that period, transgender individuals would still not be able to join the military, but any decisions to force out those already serving would be referred to the Pentagon, the Associated Press reported. » | Barney Henderson, New York | Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Only in California! California Passes Law Giving Rights to Transgender Children in Schools

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Pupils in California schools who identify as transgender will be free to choose which lavatories they use and whether they want to play on sports teams for boys or girls, under a new state law.

All 6.2 million state-school pupils aged between five and 18 are to have the right “to participate in sex-segregated programmes, activities and facilities” based on their self-perception rather than birth gender.

The law, which is the first of its kind to be passed by any American state, was hailed as a milestone by a coalition group of quality campaigners after it was signed by Governor Jerry Brown.

“This is a powerful affirmation of basic human dignity, and puts California at the forefront of leadership on transgender rights,” said John Perez, the Speaker of the California Assembly. » | Jon Swaine, New York | Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Firms Should Make Workplaces ‘Gay Friendly’

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A raft of new schemes will be aimed at promoting equality for homosexuals, such as recruiting more openly gay candidates to become MPs and making workplaces “gay-friendly”.

The Coalition's Equailty Strategy said many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB&T) people still faced discrimination and even violence.

“Attitudes are changing,” the strategy said. “But the sad reality remains that too many people are victims of discrimination and hate crime in the UK today.”

Turkey: Diva Tried Over Dissent

” She was already one of the country's most popular male singers, when in 1981 she underwent a sex-change operation.”

BBC: One of Turkey's best known singers, Bulent Ersoy, has gone on trial charged with attempting to turn the public against military service.

The charges were brought after she suggested it was not worth sacrificing soldiers' lives in Turkey's conflict with the Kurdish separatist PKK group.

The transsexual singer made her comments on television last February.

The army was conducting a major operation against the PKK in northern Iraq at the time.

Some 40,000 people have died since the conflict with the PKK began in 1984.

Ms Ersoy did not show up in court, saying she had to attend a concert, so the trial has been postponed until September, when she will be obliged to attend.

Ms Ersoy has already said she will stand by her comments.

Sitisak Sumontha said he believed the 2,600-student Kampang school, in north-eatern [sic] Thailand, was the first secondary to introduce unisex toilets.

"These students want to be able to go to the restroom in peace without fear of being watched, laughed at or groped," he added.
