Jeffrey Sachs: Why U.S. Is the Biggest Obstacle to Global Peace
Aug 8, 2025 | As the world marks 80 years since the end of WWII, renowned economist and UN advisor Professor Jeffrey Sachs offers a powerful critique of America’s global role and mindset.
In this in-depth interview, Sachs argues that the United States’ quest for dominance - not just Russian or Chinese rivalry - is the primary barrier to effective diplomacy and sustainable peace today.

Michael Lambert: Is Trump Really Turning into a Dictator?
July 12, 2025 | Trump is an insecure man-child, always in need of praise and flattery. And yet he is the most powerful man in the world. He is becoming a dictator. He has surrounded himself with sycophants who dare not cross him.
Ice or Immigration Compliance Enforcement is a force of 21,000 thugs with a budget of $3 billion who are able to arrest and deport anyone without proper proceedings or due process.
The Tacos tariffs are a fiasco. Out of the '90 deals in 90 days' predicted by Trump only two have been agreed. Trump has now postponed the deals from July 1st to August 1st and is writing letters to various countries hoping to get a deal.
The approval for Donald Trump is now at minus 12%. Higher prices and shortages are expected very soon because of the tariffs. Moreover, the deportation of 3000 mimmigrants every week is leading to food shortages since there are no workers to harvest fruit in fruit-growing areas.
With falling popularity, rising prices, widely predicted shortages, lay-offs and firms closing, life in America is likely to become very much more difficult for many, including countless Maga supporters.
It may well be that Trump will see no option but to declare martial law, suspend elections indefinitely, and effectively become a dictator.

Tesla Stock Dives as Elon Musk Plans New Political Party
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Mr. Musk’s involvement in politics was once seen by investors as a benefit to Tesla. Not anymore.
When Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, asked his followers on X last week whether it was time to create a new political party, 80 percent answered “yes.” Wall Street seems to disagree.
Tesla shares plunged 7 percent in early trading on Monday as investors registered dismay at Mr. Musk’s plans to form a third party and his intensifying feud with President Trump.
Mr. Musk’s involvement in politics and his financial support for the president’s campaign was once seen by investors as a benefit to Tesla, fueling a steep rise in company shares after the election last year.
That association has now turned into a liability. Tesla shares are down 40 percent from their peak in December. » | Jack Ewing | Monday, July 7, 2025

Trump, US Decline, and Global Chaos - Robert D Kaplan Interview | US Politics | The New Statesman
Jan 8, 2025 | Under Trump, US power will diminish - that's a disaster for the whole world, says Robert D Kaplan.
In this interview, renowned geopolitical analyst Robert D Kaplan argues that American power has been in decline for years, and this will likely get worse under Trump.
"This time around Trump is more experienced, he's more vindictive," Kaplan says.
He explores what this means for geopolitics, in particular in relation to other "great powers" China and Russia.
Kaplan also explains his view that "a world where all the great powers are declining... will lead not to a fairer world, a better world, but to more chaos"
Robert D Kaplan is the author most recently of Waste Land: A World in Permanent Crisis, which will be published in January. He holds the Robert Strausz-Hupé Chair in Geopolitics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He spoke to the New Statesman's Kate Lamble for the New Statesman podcast.

‘Recipe for Corruption’: Trump’s ‘Populism’ Exposed as He Stocks Cabinet with Billionaires
Western politics has become so corrupt that it is hard to see how it will be able to survive long-term. Moreover, do we really want it to survive? All I read about these days is corruption, total and absolute corruption. And it is vomit-inducing. There no longer appears to be any common sense in Western politics. It seems to me that the more secular Western politics has become, the more corrupt it has become. – © Mark Alexander

How Power Shoulders Tell a Story of This Campaign
THE NEW YORK TIMES: In terms of personality and policy, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are starkly contrasting figures. Yet they’ve often had one thing in common: a silhouette that features powerfully padded shoulders.
For 150 years, the size of a suit jacket’s shoulder pad — which exists today as a small, simple, triangular shaped piece of material stuffed with wadding — has fluctuated in response to fashion trends. But in this year’s election, the power shoulder has become a potent, multifaceted symbol.
The complex history of the power shoulder means it can convey confidence, power and authority. But it can also conjure swagger, playful subversion and an outsider’s defiance of an established order.
For both candidates, this strong silhouette offers the opportunity to shape a defining image: for Mr. Trump, as a billionaire who positions himself as anti-establishment; for Ms. Harris, as a formidable figure who more than belongs in a realm once reserved for men.
That may seem like a lot of meaning to put on a pair of shoulder pads — but the power shoulder can bear it. » | Derek Guy | Mr. Guy is a fashion industry commentator and the editor of Die, Workwear!, a men's wear blog. | Sunday, November 3, 2024

‘Frightening to Consider’: Fears Grow over Trump’s Threats to Political Foes
THE GUARDIAN: Critics alarmed by talk of revenge against Democrats and say second Trump term would pose unprecedented danger
Donald Trump’s extremist attacks on top Democrats as “the enemy from within” and talk of deploying the military against political foes if he wins the election are stark signs Trump will endanger the rule of law in America, say former US justice department officials and scholars.
Trump’s threats – singling out ex-speaker Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff and others as “the enemy from within” and “more dangerous than China [and] Russia” – jibe with his earlier incendiary talk of using a return to the White House to seek “revenge” against political foes led by Joe Biden. He also suggested the military could be used to quell violence at the polls from “radical left lunatics”.
Those comments, along with Trump’s adamant refusal to say clearly he will accept the election results if he is defeated, prompt critics to say Trump poses unprecedented dangers to the US constitution. » | Peter Stone in Washington | Wednesday, October 30, 2024

Doc Martens, Bomber Jackets, No Ties: Parsing Gen Z Politicians’ Style
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Many of the country’s youngest elected officials hope to express authenticity through their clothing choices.
Representative Maxwell Frost, a 26-year-old Democrat of Florida, said Gen Z-ers like himself are open to “whatever fashion and whatever creativity people bring to the table.” | Kenny Holston for The New York Times
Wearing a dark green suit from Express and Cole Haan dress sneakers, Representative Maxwell Frost, Democrat of Florida, took the stage at Metrobar in Washington. He was speaking at an event this summer by Run for Something, a political action committee that supports young Democrats seeking state and local office.
“How’s everybody doing?” Mr. Frost, 26, asked a crowd of about 200 people, in which more than one brightly colored Telfar bag could be spotted. A number of attendees, including Mr. Frost, were members of Gen Z, the generation born between 1997 and 2012.
In an interview after his speech, Mr. Frost said that “a cool thing about our generation is that we’re super-open to whatever fashion and whatever creativity people bring to the table.” Much of his professional wardrobe consists of suits, but he has worn bomber jackets and Dr. Martens shoes at more casual events, he said, as well as T-shirts on the campaign trail.
“I feel like there’s a direct connection between Doc Martens, and a certain style, and progressive young people,” Mr. Frost said. » | Rachel Janfaza | Sunday, September 17, 2023

‘We Can’t Rest or Relent’: Pence Reiterates Support of Staunch Abortion Restrictions
THE GUARDIAN: Former vice-president hails Dobbs decision as ‘historic victory’ but says it didn’t go far enough and urges a nationwide abortion ban

Despite their unpopularity with the American public, former Republican vice-president and 2024 White House hopeful Mike Pence doubled down Sunday on his hard-line support of staunch abortion restrictions, saying: “We just can’t rest or relent until we restore the sanctity of life.”
Pence – in an interview on Fox News Sunday – made clear that he viewed bringing the elimination of abortion “to the center of American law” as both essential and “a winning issue” for the Republican party trying to wrest back control of the Oval Office.
“I’m pro-life, and I don’t apologize for it,” Pence boasted to host Shannon Bream, even though polling shows most Americans favor keeping the termination of pregnancies legal in most cases. » | Ramon Antonio Vargas | Monday, June 26, 2023
Such hypocrisy! Such concern for embryos and the yet-to-be-born. Such lack of concern for schoolchildren being shot by the dozen because of America's out-of-control gun ownership and unwillingness to control the ownership of guns strictly. Such conern for the embryo; such lack of conern for the pregnant mothers.
It would appear that the USA is falling into a state of benightedness and darkness. Even Saudi Arabia allows abortions in certain circumstances!
This development in the States shows me, and should show you, that the USA is losing its pole position and hegemony in the world. Who in his right mind would want to follow the USA if it carries on with this sort of insanity? – © Mark Alexander
