Martin Bashir Leaves BBC amid Inquiry into His Interview with Princess Diana

The journalist Martin Bashir has left the British Broadcasting Corporation, as it prepares to publish the findings of an investigation into accusations that he used dishonest tactics to secure a major 1995 television interview with Diana, Princess of Wales.

In an email to colleagues on Friday, Jonathan Munro, the BBC’s deputy director of news, said that Mr. Bashir had stepped down from his position as the BBC’s religion editor and was leaving the corporation.

“He let us know of his decision last month, just before being readmitted to hospital for another surgical procedure on his heart,” Mr. Munro wrote. “Although he underwent major surgery toward the end of last year, he is facing some ongoing issues and has decided to focus on his health.”

The anonymous soldier is said to be laying low in south-east Asia as police investigators probe claims that members of the Army helped cause the car crash that killed Diana in 1997.

It has been claimed that special forces agents shined a light into the eyes of Diana's driver, which led to him losing control of the car and hitting a pillar in a tunnel in Paris.

The sniper - known only as Soldier N - made the claims to police investigators, leading to the inquiry into the Princess's death being reopened.

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: According to the tagline on posters for the new biopic portraying Princess Diana’s love affair with a Pakistani heart surgeon, “the legend is never the whole story.”

Now the man at the centre of the narrative, Hasnat Khan, has spoken out to insist that the film itself does not tell the whole story either, being based entirely “on hypotheses and gossip.”

Dr Khan, who was nicknamed Mr Wonderful by the Princess, launched a scathing criticism of the forthcoming big budget release, Diana, claiming it was “completely wrong” and vowing he would never watch it.

A still image from the film showing the actors playing him and Diana side by side at the hospital where they met was enough to convince him it would entirely misrepresent their relationship, he said.

“I don't see this movie doing well at all,” he said.

Scotland Yard Examines New Information on Death of Diana, Princess of Wales

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Scotland Yard has confirmed it is examining new information alleging the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was a criminal act.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime and Operations Command are assessing the “relevance and credibility” of new information regarding the death of the Princess and her close friend Dodi al Fayed in Paris in 1997.

It has been reported that new intelligence claimed the Princess was killed by a member of the British military, but Scotland Yard refused to give any more details about its nature.

The information is also believed to have been passed to the Met by the Royal Military Police, after being raised by the parents-in-law of a former soldier. The new dossier is said to include a reference to the Special Air Service, or SAS, Sky News reported.

If material has indeed been uncovered by another police force it could lead to it being attached more weight than numerous other conspiracy theories, which were rejected by an inquest in 2008.
