Israel Tells Nationals: Leave Sinai Immediately

HAARETZ: Counterterrorism unit warning of planned attacks during the upcoming Jewish holiday period.

Israel on Tuesday issued a travel warning for its nationals visting the Sinai peninsula in Egypt, advising them to leave the area immediately.

The warning came from the government's counterterrorism unit. The unit warned Israelis of planned attacks during the upcoming Jewish holiday period, which begins with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), at sundown on September 18.

The announcement mentioned tensions along the northern border of Sinai with the Gaza Strip, as well as recent threats from Hezbollah to strike at Israelis. >>> Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent | Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Lebanon Journalist UK Entry Veto

BBC: A Lebanese journalist with links to militant group Hezbollah has been barred from entering Britain.

Ibrahim Moussawi was due to speak at the London School of Oriental and African Studies, but the home secretary has ruled he should be denied a visa.

Mr Moussawi is editor of the Al-Intiqad newspaper, linked to Hezbollah, and a former head of the group's TV station.

The Tories, who called for him to be banned, said he was a "known extremist" who had made anti-Semitic remarks.

The Home Office said it would not comment on individual cases.

Denial

Mr Moussawi had been invited to speak at the School of Oriental and African Studies on 25 March as part of a course on political Islam.

Billed as an "expert on Hezbollah and Islamist political theory," the university said he planned to discuss Hezbollah's "history, strategy and ideology" and "current politics and prospects".

He is currently the editor of Lebanese weekly newspaper Al-Intiqad and formerly worked as head of foreign news at Hezbollah's official television channel, Al-Manar, which has been criticised for its allegedly anti-Semitic output.

Mr Moussawi, who was barred from Ireland in 2007, has denied making any inflammatory or anti-Semitic comments. >>> | Friday, March 13, 2009

Nasrallah Heralds Signs of US Defeat in Region

IRNA: Leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, said Monday night that all signs of US defeat are clear in the region given the firm intention of regional states to resist US plans.

"Experience of the past three decades, Iran's Islamic Revolution in particular, proved that US was not able to reach all its goals in the region," the prominent cleric said speaking in a teleconference with Iran's state television's channel 2 news program.

He added that emergence of regional resistance movements and uprising in the past three decades have proved that "US expansionist plans were damaged and Washington has failed to fulfill its dreams in the region."

Asked how he had successfully gathered different Lebanese parties and religious minorities together in the name of Hezbollah movement, Nasrallah said "It is a common point among all who live in Lebanon that Israel is an occupier and criminal enemy."

"Everyone in Lebanon believes that Israel is a common enemy of all Lebanese and it is easy to gather people together to confront a common enemy," he said.

He added that Hezbollah has special place for almost all Lebanese people and that minor disagreements, if any, could not damage its dignity and status. [Source: IRNA] | September 9, 2008

Bush Hails Israel's "Chosen People" as Arabs Lament

REUTERS: JERUSALEM - President George W. Bush told Israelis on Thursday they were a "chosen people" who can forever count on American support against enemies like Hamas and Iran.

On a day when Palestinians remembered homes and land lost as Israel was created in 1948, Bush made only fleeting reference to their aspirations for a state of their own in a speech marking Israel's 60th anniversary that was laced with references to God.

Basking in ovations on the second day of a farewell visit to a country where his presidency is hailed as a golden age, Bush again said little of the talks he has sponsored in recent months between Israel and the Palestinians, which he hopes can bring a deal on a Palestinian state before he leaves office in January.

Speaking of the "promise of God" for a "homeland for the chosen people" in Israel, Bush told the Israeli parliament after a visit to the Roman-era Jewish fortress at Masada: "Masada shall never fall again, and America will always stand with you."

He predicted the defeat of Islamist enemies Hamas, Hezbollah and al Qaeda in a "battle of good and evil".

Letting Iran have nuclear weapons would be an "unforgivable betrayal of future generations", he said. By comparing talking with such foes to appeasement of Hitler, he sparked a debate at home among those campaigning to succeed him as president.

Bush described the "bonds of the Book" -- faith in the Bible shared by Christians like himself and Jews -- as bolstering an "unbreakable" alliance between Israel and the United States. Bush Hails Israel's "Chosen People" as Arabs Lament >>> By Matt Spetalnick and Tabassum Zakaria | May 15, 2008

Hezbollah Takes Over West Beirut

BBC: Gunmen from the Shia militant group Hezbollah have seized most of western Beirut, driving out supporters of the Western-backed government.

The gunmen, who also back Hezbollah's Shia opposition allies, have forced the closure of pro-government media.

The opposition said it would maintain roadblocks around Beirut until there was a solution to the political crisis.

At least 11 people, mainly civilians, have been killed and dozens injured in the city in three days of clashes.

The fighting was sparked by a government move on Monday to shut down Hezbollah's telecoms network.

The UN Security Council has urged the rival parties to stop fighting amid fears of civil war breaking out. Hezbollah Takes Over West Beirut >>>
