Justice Dept. Official Pushes Prosecutors to Investigate George Soros’s Foundation
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The directive suggests department leaders are following orders from the president, a major break from decades of past practice meant to insulate the agency from political interference.
A senior Justice Department official has instructed more than a half dozen U.S. attorney’s offices to draft plans to investigate a group funded by George Soros, the billionaire Democratic donor whom President Trump has demanded be thrown in jail.
The official’s directive, a copy of which was viewed by The New York Times, goes as far as to list possible charges prosecutors could file, ranging from arson to material support of terrorism. The memo suggests department leaders are following orders from the president that specific people or groups be subject to criminal investigation — a major break from decades of past practice meant to insulate the Justice Department from political interference.
The move is the latest instance of the Justice Department moving against Mr. Trump’s perceived enemies.
Over the weekend, the president urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to act quickly in seeking criminal charges against his longtime nemesis, the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey, and the New York attorney general, Letitia James, who has sued Mr. Trump and his businesses for hundreds of millions of dollars. Separate investigations into them are being conducted by federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia, and grand juries may soon be asked to vote on proposed indictments in those cases. » | Devlin Barrett | Reporting from Washington | Thursday, September 25, 2025

Judges Fear for Their Safety Amid a Wave of Threats
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Federal judges are worried that online threats against judges who oversee high-profile cases challenging Trump administration policies may lead to real-world violence.
President Trump’s angry call on Tuesday for the impeachment of a federal judge who ruled against his administration on deportation flights has set off a string of near-instant social media taunts and threats, including images of judges being marched off in handcuffs.
The call came against an ominous backdrop. Nine days earlier, police officers in Charleston, S.C., had been dispatched to the home of one of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s sisters because of a threat that there was a pipe bomb in her mailbox. “The device’s detonation will be triggered as soon as the mailbox is next opened,” the emailed threat read.
The pipe bomb proved to be a hoax, but the threats and intimidation faced by judges and their families in recent weeks are real, judges say. At a moment when the judiciary is weighing pivotal decisions on the legality of Trump administration policies, the potential for violence against judges seems to be rising. » | Mattathias Schwartz and Abbie VanSickle | Mattathias Schwartz covers the federal judiciary from Philadelphia.
