THE TELEGRAPH: Telegraph View: Remembering the day that changed the world.
The devastating terrorist attacks that took place in New York and Washington eight years ago today are the reason why our troops are still in Afghanistan. Initially they were sent, along with American and other Nato forces, to track down Osama bin Laden and destroy al-Qaeda's bases, an outcome that required the defeat of the Taliban, who had turned the country into a launch pad for international jihad. Those who question our continuing military presence in the region should remember how they felt on Sept 11, 2001, as the twin towers of the World Trade Centre collapsed, killing 2,500 people, including 67 British citizens. It was, said Tony Blair as he pledged to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with America, a day that changed the world. >>> Telegraph View | Friday, September 11, 2009
