British government consigns term ‘War on Terror’ to the dustbin of history

If the British government feels that the term is counterproductive, then allow me to suggest a better term: ‘War on Jihad’! This term will be clear to everyone what we are up against. Go for it, Tone!

TIMESONLINE: The Government has stopped using the phrase “War on Terror”, Hilary Benn, the International Development Secretary said last night. Government puts an end to the ‘War on Terror’

But Muslim extremists are to be tracked like paedophiles. TIMESONLINE: MI5 adopts paedophile-tracking tactics for Muslim extremists

Mark, Your suggestion that 'the war on terror' now be referred to as 'the war on jihad' is excellent! Do you think Tony Blair has the courage to do this?

From the article,
"The threat from home-grown Islamic extremism and terrorism, largely emanating from British Pakistanis, is a relatively recent phenomenon. The terrorist threat in Britain before the 9/11 attacks in the US was principally viewed as coming from Algerians, Moroccans and other North Africans.

Since 2001, and particularly since the July 7 suicide bombings in 2005, MI5 has been collecting as much information as possible about Muslim radicalisation in this country.

However, security sources emphasised that the new approach — contributing towards the police’s existing “Rich Picture” project, which is aimed at uncovering young Muslims being groomed for terrorism — did not mean that MI5 was targeting the Muslim communities in Britain.

This is a highly sensitive issue, especially as Muslim leaders have accused MI5 and the police of using all their resources to spy on their communities.

Both MI5 and the police insist they want clerics and other Muslim leaders to help them to stamp out extremism and actively seek their cooperation. The security sources said that it was a matter for individual police forces to decide how to prioritise their resources in keeping track of Islamic extremists. But the aim was to enable the police in their areas to know of the whereabouts of extremists."

They have got their work cut out then!
From observation, I would say the police footsoldiers are aware of the problem faced in Britain.
It is the political geniuses of Mr. Blair and co that are unsure of what comes next.
Many cops expect a civil war type scenario within a few years.
Some would say that forward planning has been undertaken at Regional level already.
The trick will be to keep the public oblivious to the danger whilst covering the government's back with incessant public warnings, until the public just give up caring. Until the next time.

You've just painted a very bleak scenario, Mirrorman.

Yes Mark, but it is the most likely outcome if events and personalities continue on down their current path. Mirrorman is right on the money. With everyone happy to remain oblivious, with the political elite hoping and praying by the hour, though who knows quite what it is that the elites actually do want (?), there is scant chance of peace in our time. The Nevilles of this world are once again going to be stomped on by the pages of history. Just how many will pay the price this time, and no, I don't expect those responsible for this debacle to suffer any consequence, at least none that does more than offend their indelicate feelings.
