THE TELEGRAPH: Gordon Brown has invited oil-rich states like Saudi Arabia to invest in the next generation of British nuclear power stations.
The Prime Minister extended the invitation to OPEC members as part of a deal he will propose at a summit in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
Mr Brown said he wants oil producers to allow Western energy firms to invest in their fields, increasing OPEC's extraction and refining capacity.
In exchange, he said, Western oil-consumers led by Britain should open their economies to investment from oil-states' sovereign wealth funds. In particular, he said, sovereign funds should be encouraged to invest in alternative energy sources, including nuclear power.
The government has signalled its willingness to license a new wave of nuclear power reactors in Britain, but there are doubts about the energy industry's appetite for funding new stations. Unbelievable! Letting OPEC buy in to alternative sources of energy!
The scenario for the free world grows more depressing every day.

Mark, Thanks for letting me know of this article and information -- not that I can do anything about our leaders, of course.
Isn't this lunacy? Gordon Brown clearly has no understanding of what is going on in world politics; and if he does, he's a fool. He is increasingly coming over as Neville Chamberlain!
Mark, Gordon is clutching at straws, desperate for anything that smacks of successful accomplishment, before he goes down in the history books as an even bigger failure than even poor old Neville. If he doesn't accomplish something soon, his own party faithful will turn on him, and he will be unceremoniously given the proverbial order of the boot.
He is also intent on doing his bit for "the cause" as all good little comrades should do of course; he just doesn't realize that the smiling Saudis and other confrères of their religion, will devour him and his pals once they are in control, and they do seek that goal as we here well know. Islam hasn't changed its nature, as you are at pains to point out to us, but Gordo and friends are just too important and busy to take the time off to actually learn a little history; well he and his pals will be left behind by events soon enough.

Wouldn't it be good, though, if these people sat down with a good book and learned something for a change?
They're above such trifling details Mark; they are far, far too important in their own minds eye, to do anything so mundane as to read any thing, especially if it might disturb their superior preconceived ideals.
